This document discusses several exercises and provides guidelines for safe alternatives. It analyzes the questionable exercises of windmill, neck circling, straight leg sit-ups, anchored sit-ups, shin and quadriceps stretch, and deep squatting. For each exercise, it explains how the movement violates body mechanics by placing stress on joints or muscles. Physical therapy and rehabilitation for shoulder injuries should be, with only a few exceptions, the primary treatment for a throwing athlete before operative treatment is considered. Articular-sided partial rotator cuff tears and superior labral tears are common in throwing athletes. Operative treatment for shoulder injuries can be successful when nonoperative measures have failed. Throwing athletes who have a glenohumeral internal rotation deficit have a good response, in most cases, to stretching of the posteroinferior aspect of the capsule. • Avoid ballistic stretching ligaments and joint capsules
• Do not hyperflex/extend the neck
• Avoid compression on IV disk
• Do stretch the chest, hip, calf, hamstring, low back and
thigh rotator muscle
• Do strengthen the abdominal, shoulder, low back, lateral
hip and shin muscles
• Avoid fast forceful flexion of the spine
• Do not hyperextend the lower back (except when
prescribe)
