Development and Deployment: The Human FactorBoris Adryan
Thingmonk 2017: End-to-end IoT solutions are often highly integrated. Even small changes to the UX of a product can have profound impact on hardware requirements, while physical constraints such as battery capacity can dictate software architecture. A holistic understanding of IoT is key to efficient implementation, the “T-shaped engineer” the star in every development team. Contrast this to intellectual silos and matrix organisation, and you may see why especially large companies fail to move quickly into IoT. Similar issues strike the application of IoT. Deploying a solution in the enterprise is just a cost factor if processes are not adjusted to leverage the connected device and its data. However, changes in process often affect companies across their entire organisational structure. This can require a change of mindsets, making the success of an IoT solution depending on the human factor.
Broad point of view on User/Consumer Experience as a differentiator across product/services.
Thx to VentureHive ( http://venturehive.co/) for the speaking engagement today. Here is the deck I presented on thinking of UX in terms of influencing better ways to own consumers habits.
From Content Strategy to Drupal Site Building - Connecting the dotsRonald Ashri
Content strategy is, undoubtedly, a hot topic these days. A lot is being said that spans the range from concerns regarding the ability to display content on any device to the ability to drive engagement and increase traffic through better content creation and social media strategies. In this presentation we will connect the dots between these issues and practical Drupal site-building concerns with tools that are readily available now.
We will show, through specific examples and references to available modules, how different approaches to content strategy can be practically implemented on Drupal sites. The aim is to equip Drupal site-builders with a handy toolkit that will allow them to both implement a content strategy for their sites as well as better exchange information with content strategists.
The examples will include:
- Different approaches to building content types so as to empower content creators to create a range of different structures.
- Best practices in using vocabularies (fixed, open, user-generated, moderated, etc) or where alternative categorization methods may be relevant.
We will also discuss:
- Editorial calendars and scheduling.
- The true benefit of workflows (and how, sometimes, they can be a disadvantage).
- Analytics and how the ability to measure the effects of any strategy is as important as defining the strategy itself.
Attendees will go away with practical examples and techniques that they can apply to their sites as well as a better understanding of what content strategy really is and how they can use it to improve their sites.
The examples are a result of our own experiences in helping both clients develop their content strategy as well as applying it on italymagazine.com, an in-house product of ours. We grew italymagazine.com to a relevant online digital brand with a strong community by expressing our content strategy ideas through the tools that Drupal 7 made available to us. The resulting ~250% increase in traffic over 3 months is a testament to both the value of a content strategy as well as the power of Drupal to allow you to flexibly and iteratively support it.

For millennia people worked in relative stability with industries sustained by very little change for hundreds of years. Even the industrial revolution saw a high degree of stability after the initial disruption. Mining, foundries, railways, shipping, mills etc employed thousands for a lifetime. This saw the creation of new towns and cities dedicated to major industries and gave rise to the illusion of job security - a notion that persists in many political minds today.
In <50 years that heritage has been swept away by technology and globalisation. The future now belongs to the mobile, the connected, the networkers and the most adaptable. A lifetimes employment in one job in one sector living in one place is rare. Even mining and agriculture are increasingly automated to require fewer people with less muscle and more tech skills. And while the media feature the destruction of jobs and a total takeover by the machines, the empirical evidence shows a growing number of vacancies for the skilled and those educated to adapt to the new needs of an age of robotics and artificial intelligence.
Everybody, every society and country, now face significant challenges in the need to change and adapt to technological advance….
“ Exactly like Mother Nature and biological evolution, technological evolution shows no compassion and no care - it really is about the survival of the most adaptable”
Each week I/O at Work is releasing a series of presentations that discuss the “What you need to know” from this year’s SIOP conference. We’ve grouped these key takeaways into four topics: Employee Success, Business Success, Fairness, & a bonus SIOP coverage. This is the first installment discussing presentations around the topic of employee success.
A talk delivered by software engineer and serial tech founder, Ms. Bernadette Hyland to year 9-12 students in Brisbane Australia. The information session was for girls to highlight software engineering and what students can do now to prepare for a productive and satisfying career that leverages science, technology, engineering and math.

Staying afloat in a sea of technological change - Business Librarians Associa...Andy Tattersall
Librarians and information professionals are increasingly tied to technology and the challenges that come with it. As a result technology is seen as an ever important part of their role, whether they like it or not. Librarians champion digital literacy and citizenship, social media, internet privacy and equal access to knowledge across the web. Their roles are ever supported by a myriad of technologies that can solve the most niche or universal of problems. Technology adds power to the librarian’s skill set, but it also comes with caveats and pitfalls. What technology is best for the job, how do you find out about them and what are the implications for their use, such as security, longevity and support. To be a library and information professional in the digital age means you have to pay heed to these issues. This means a combination of the right skills, flexibility and an acceptance you may fail at times. They say you should never work with children and animals, at times it feels like should apply to technology. It can be unpredictable, challenging and disruptive - but these are all scenarios that librarians are well used to. They have the right skill sets and the purpose of this keynote will be to guide library professionals how to navigate the very rough seas of technology and find new and exciting opportunities.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
