The Spencer Ogden Board
In 2010, David Spencer-Percival and Sir Peter Ogden
partnered to open the specialist energy recruiter,
Spencer Ogden.
Sir Peter Ogden (Chairman)
Following a Harvard education and a successful
career in investment banking both in the UK & US with
Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley, Sir Peter founded
Computacenter PLC, Europe’s largest computer
services company with 13,000 employees, Dealogic
PLC the financial software and data company
and FlyBlink the private jet company. This success
allowed him to set up the Ogden Trust which pledges
over £1m a year to support bright children from low
income backgrounds. Sir Peter is a doctor of civil law
and science and a fellow of Hughes Hall Cambridge.
He received a knighthood for services to education
from Her Majesty the Queen in 2005.
David Spencer-Percival (Chief Executive)
David’s recruitment career spans over 15 years and
involved working internationally with global companies
providing recruitment services. David was a founder
of recruitment giant Huntress Group where he was a
group Board Director and managed the technology
division as well as developing the now coveted
graduate academy. When Huntress Group was sold
for £52 million in 2007 to Nomura private equity it
was one of the leading, award winning recruitment
businesses in the UK with 500 staff and 27 offices.

Nuclear
Nuclear power is currently undergoing a period of change due to the need for cleaner methods
of generating electricity as well as the reality that fuels are likely to be phased out due to their
environmental impact.
With investments in New Generation III technology by various companies across the globe as
well as the ability to extend safely the lifetime of existing nuclear plants, many governments now
see nuclear power as a cost efficient way to cut down on the cost of importing fuels and stop
them being susceptible to fluctuating prices within the Energy market. This situation will mean
that they will be a formidable increase in the demand for expertise and skills within the nuclear
sector.
In 2008 the government gave the go ahead for a new generation of nuclear power stations.
It said it would identify what it believed were the best sites for new reactors, streamline the
planning process and set up a new independent body to monitor clean up costs. Ministers
hope that the first reactor could be operational by 2020. The government have suggested that
the replacement nuclear power stations could be built on new sites not just those with existing
plants
As of July 2008, there were more that 430 operating nuclear power plants and together they
provided about 15 percent of the world’s electricity in 2007. Of these 31 countries, some
depend more on nuclear power than others. For instance, in France, 77 percent of the country’s
electricity comes from nuclear power.
Nuclear power is efficient. Most nuclear reactors only need to be refuelled every 18 months or
so. At each refuelling, a third of the fuel is removed and stored as waste, and new fuel is inserted
in its place. The new fuel costs about 40-60 million dollars US per refuelling. By contrast, a
similarly sized natural gas power plant can consume up to 600 million dollars US in natural gas
over the same period. A similar sized coal plant would require at least a dozen large dump trucks
full of coal each day.

Demand for power is set to increase to 24,980 THh by 2015, a 25% increase. At present,
thermal Power is one of the most widely used forms of power generation within over 1800
stations currently in operation or being built globally.

Smart Energy
The demand in Europe for a sustainable, low-carbon economy cannot be met using the same
power generation, energy combination and distribution technology that have served for over half
a century. Subsequently something has to change.
One of the first challenges to overcome is to address the aging grids which have remained
unchanged for 40 years. As more and more power sources are put online including micro-
generation alternatives including wind and solar, more stress will be put on the grids.
The solution is to transform the grids from how they are today into intelligent energy networks
which enable real-time management of load and demand. These new ‘smart grids’ are viewed
as must haves for a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
Smart Metering is the first step of the journey to create a Smart Grid. In the UK alone the British
Government and Ofgem want to bring Smart Metering into 27 million residential properties.
These Smart Meters will allow consumers to analyse their energy consumption and eventually
save energy emissions and ultimately money as new tariffs are introduced from the energy
providers that are tailored to the different patterns of energy use
