A report on the consequences of Chinese immigrants
Chinese immigrants have a long history in the United States. The topic of the consequence of
Chinese immigrants is a topic that relates to what we are covering in class and adds to what we
can learn from our assigned reading. The topic “consequence of Chinese immigrants” closely
relates to America’s history since 1877 since the discrimination Chinese faced in America will
be discussed such as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Similarly, I will have a close look at the
different reasons through the historical background as to why the Chinese migrated to the United
States of America. The topic, “consequence of Chinese immigrants” is broad enough to be
interesting to a variety of people, but narrow enough so you can discuss briefly hence gave me
more reasons to discuss such a topic.
Historical background
It all began in the 1820s where it began as a slow trickle of the arrival of Chinese immigrants to
the United States. By the year 1849, approximately less than 650 Chinese immigrants were living
in the United States. The migration of Chinese was worsened during the gold rush fever which
swept the United States. Like any other ethnic group, the Chinese immigrants were attracted to
the notion of quick fortunes which increased the population of Chinese immigrants rapidly. Over
25,000 Chinese immigrants had arrived by the year 1852 and over 300,000 Chinese lived in the
United States by the year 1880. Majority of the Chinese immigrants lived in California. The
dream of finding gold become invalid and many Chinese immigrants opted for other activities
such as employment, for example, construction of the first transcontinental railroad while a
group of Chinese immigrants helped to farm at cotton plantations of the Old South In far east.
How the project will be done
In my project, I am going to discuss how the Chinese immigrants were mishandled including
how racism and discrimination became part and parcel of America in late 1800. Among the
topics, I am going to discuss in my project includes the new California constitution of 1879
which denied naturalized Chinese citizens the right to vote or hold state employment. Similarly, I
am going to discuss the Chinese Exclusion Act which contained sets of laws the U.S. Congress
passed that forbade further Chinese immigration into the United States for ten years.
All these led to a different response from Chinese immigrants. Some Chinese immigrants
remained stuck in most menial jobs which were lowest paying while others returned to China.
Several Chinese immigrants found assistance through the creation of benevolent associations
which they used to defend themselves against legal and political discrimination as well as
supporting Chinese communities. However, the history of Chinese immigrants to the United
States remained largely one of deprivation and hardship well into the twentieth century. My
project will be covered via power points presentation which will be well detailed including
footnotes helping us understand important events or ideas we are covering in class. There three
main points I want to get across to your fellow students are the new California constitution of
1879 which denied naturalized Chinese citizens the right to vote or hold state employment.
Secondly is the Chinese Exclusion Act which forbade further Chinese immigration into the
United States for ten years. And thirdly is the result of the various laws and discriminations
Chinese immigrants faced. These three points will form the foundation of my project.
Primary sources
Correspondence Between Acting Inspector in Charge at New Orleans, Louisiana, Edwin B.
Schmucker and Commissioner-General F. P. Sargent Regarding an Article in a Chinese
Newspaper Concerning Abuse of C; 9/7/1905; Records of the Immigration and Naturalization
Service, Record Group 85. [Online Version,

regarding-an-article-in-a-chinese-newspaper-concerning-abuse-of-chinese, February 23, 2019]
The above are records which are part of a series consisting of correspondence mainly originating
with the Bureau of Immigration and its predecessors relating to cases involving registration,
arrests, deportations, smuggling, and exclusion of Chinese immigrants; certain proposed changes
in exclusion laws with model drafts; certificates of residence; and appointments, salaries, duties,
and jurisdiction of officials in charge of Chinese immigration. Therefore it is very essential in
helping us understand the topic. The strength of the source is that gives us know what actually
happened. The weakness of the above source is the reliability of the source.
[Chinese Exclusion Act] An Act of May 6, 1882, Public Law 71, 47th Congress, 1st Session, 22
STAT 58, to Execute Certain Treaty Stipulations Relating to Chinese; 5/6/1882; Enrolled Acts
and Resolutions of Congress, 1789 - 2011; General Records of the United States Government,
Record Group 11; National Archives Building, Washington, DC. [Online Version,
https://www.docsteach.org/documents/document/chinese-exclusion-act, February 23, 2019]
The above document is The Chinese Exclusion Act. It was the first significant law restricting
immigration into the United States and was approved on May 6, 1882. The document above is an
important source as it allows learn about the suffering of the Chinese. President Chester A.
Arthur signed while Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act In the spring of 1882. The
strength of the above document is that it provided an absolute 10-year moratorium on Chinese
labor immigration. It is the first document that prescribed laws concerning ethnic entry on the
premise that it endangered the good order of certain localities. No evident weakness in the above
source.
Secondary sources
Hooper, K., & Batalova, J. (2015). Chinese immigrants in the United States. Migration Policy
Institute, 28.
The above source Is very useful in helping us the topic properly. The strength of the source is
that it explains the different Chinese migrated to the United States and what were the different
reasons Chinese migrated to America and the results of each time. There is no evident weakness
I have seen in the source.
Johnson, K. R. (2016). Making Foreigners: Immigration and Citizenship Law in America, 1600–
2000. Journal of American History, 103(2), 444-445.
The above book helps us understand the topic since the author has synthesized four hundred
years of American immigration and nationality law and posits that the law marginalizes certain
groups of noncitizens, particularly people of color, the poor, women, and others. It explains how
both Chinese Americans were frequently subjected to the same treatment as Chinese immigrants.
The weakness of the source is that it does not a detailed account of what actually happened. The
strength of the book is that it reinforces how the Chinese immigrants, as well as Chinese
Americans, were treated badly.

Special report chinese immigrant

  • 1. A report on the consequences of Chinese immigrants Chinese immigrants have a long history in the United States. The topic of the consequence of Chinese immigrants is a topic that relates to what we are covering in class and adds to what we can learn from our assigned reading. The topic “consequence of Chinese immigrants” closely relates to America’s history since 1877 since the discrimination Chinese faced in America will be discussed such as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Similarly, I will have a close look at the different reasons through the historical background as to why the Chinese migrated to the United States of America. The topic, “consequence of Chinese immigrants” is broad enough to be interesting to a variety of people, but narrow enough so you can discuss briefly hence gave me more reasons to discuss such a topic. Historical background It all began in the 1820s where it began as a slow trickle of the arrival of Chinese immigrants to the United States. By the year 1849, approximately less than 650 Chinese immigrants were living in the United States. The migration of Chinese was worsened during the gold rush fever which swept the United States. Like any other ethnic group, the Chinese immigrants were attracted to the notion of quick fortunes which increased the population of Chinese immigrants rapidly. Over 25,000 Chinese immigrants had arrived by the year 1852 and over 300,000 Chinese lived in the United States by the year 1880. Majority of the Chinese immigrants lived in California. The dream of finding gold become invalid and many Chinese immigrants opted for other activities such as employment, for example, construction of the first transcontinental railroad while a group of Chinese immigrants helped to farm at cotton plantations of the Old South In far east. How the project will be done
  • 2. In my project, I am going to discuss how the Chinese immigrants were mishandled including how racism and discrimination became part and parcel of America in late 1800. Among the topics, I am going to discuss in my project includes the new California constitution of 1879 which denied naturalized Chinese citizens the right to vote or hold state employment. Similarly, I am going to discuss the Chinese Exclusion Act which contained sets of laws the U.S. Congress passed that forbade further Chinese immigration into the United States for ten years. All these led to a different response from Chinese immigrants. Some Chinese immigrants remained stuck in most menial jobs which were lowest paying while others returned to China. Several Chinese immigrants found assistance through the creation of benevolent associations which they used to defend themselves against legal and political discrimination as well as supporting Chinese communities. However, the history of Chinese immigrants to the United States remained largely one of deprivation and hardship well into the twentieth century. My project will be covered via power points presentation which will be well detailed including footnotes helping us understand important events or ideas we are covering in class. There three main points I want to get across to your fellow students are the new California constitution of 1879 which denied naturalized Chinese citizens the right to vote or hold state employment. Secondly is the Chinese Exclusion Act which forbade further Chinese immigration into the United States for ten years. And thirdly is the result of the various laws and discriminations Chinese immigrants faced. These three points will form the foundation of my project. No evident weakness in the above source. Secondary sources Hooper, K., & Batalova, J. (2015). Chinese immigrants in the United States. Migration Policy Institute, 28. The above source Is very useful in helping us the topic properly. The strength of the source is that it explains the different Chinese migrated to the United States and what were the different reasons Chinese migrated to America and the results of each time. There is no evident weakness I have seen in the source. Johnson, K. R. (2016). Making Foreigners: Immigration and Citizenship Law in America, 1600– 2000. Journal of American History, 103(2), 444-445. The above book helps us understand the topic since the author has synthesized four hundred years of American immigration and nationality law and posits that the law marginalizes certain groups of noncitizens, particularly people of color, the poor, women, and others. It explains how both Chinese Americans were frequently subjected to the same treatment as Chinese immigrants. The weakness of the source is that it does not a detailed account of what actually happened. The strength of the book is that it reinforces how the Chinese immigrants, as well as Chinese Americans, were treated badly.
