Strategies for enhancing students’ ability to reflect upon digital texts
With the advent of technology in the classroom, students are confronted with digital reading materials. Students’ success in learning depends on their ability to understand and use the information in these texts. How can technology support reading comprehension processes of digital texts?
Using the potential of this new medium may encourage students to reflect while they are reading digital texts. What kind of strategies can students use in the digital milieu?
Over the past ten years, Federation University Australia's Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation (CeRDI) has established a programmatic research program in the area of agriculture.
This program is supported through partnerships with organisations including Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), grower groups nationally, the Victorian Government, Corangamite Catchment Management Authority and CSIRO.
This presentation profiles a number of research initiatives that are associated with that program.
CeRDI is able to bring both a production and catchment perspective to agriculture-related research. .

In March 2015 the RUN Precision Agriculture Flagship was launched by the Hon. Barnaby Joyce MP.
CeRDI represents Federation University Australia in the RUN Precision Agriculture Flagship. As part of its participation, CeRDI was successful in receiving two PhD scholarships.
Chris Bahlo’s research is focused on advancing the management of livestock health using information systems and international standards for data exchange to be able to federate and exchange livestock health and management data from multiple organisations as well as disparate sensor technologies and proprietary systems using appropriate web-based technologies.
Thomas Hill’s research is focused on the role that legacy data plays in farm decision-making and the adoption of best practice, and seeks to build greater insight into the nature and availability of agricultural legacy data, as well as the barriers and enablers for the sharing of legacy data and information.
As South Africans we are as affected by this environmental turbulence as anyone else. Our situation is made even more difficult by the fact that we are a society in the throes of an excruciatingly difficult period of transition. The world seems mad – angry mad. People seem to be feeling cheated; isolated and deprived. Those same people work with us as colleagues; employees; bosses. We can’t check these emotions at the door when we arrive at work, so how is this affecting the way our contact centres work? How are our employees affected? What is the impact on the way customers interact with us? How are we adapting to the tumult that is reflected in the world around us? How do we transform leadership practice to re-establish principles of collaboration; cohesion and collective accountability for excellence in service delivery?

2. WELCOME
In our last issue we advised that we were moving our core
business process to the cloud with NetSuite. Well we have
come to the end of that journey as NetSuite was successfully
implemented at the end of April. This is the first step in our
aim to be totally cloud based by the end of 2017.
In doing so, we will become more agile and have the ability
to interact better with our key stakeholders, such as clients,
suppliers, manufacturers and our supply chain partners in a
manner of ways via email, the web, social media etc…
Our operations team is expanding…on 23 February, Marc
Nish joined our operations team, to support increased
activity in this department. He brings with him experience
from a variety of large international companies, and
we’re looking forward to him utilising this experience to
Skanwear’s advantage in the coming months.

update
Welcome to Issue 2 of SPARX, news
from Skanwear.
We have received a fantastic reaction
from the first issue of our newsletter
from new and existing customers alike.
Our sales team have been kept busy
with the many enquiries from new
companies, and also with requests for more copies of the
newsletter to distribute amongst the colleagues of our current
customers.
There have been four new starters both in the office and the
warehouse, you can find out more about them on pages 6 & 7.
In other news, our garment technicians are embarking on customer visits to see the wearers in action. These trips will see the technicians visit personnel
working in a range of weather conditions and working environments to see what their needs are from a safety point of view and also how comfortable
the PPE they currently use are. This brings the ‘we use our eyes and ears to make our garments’ saying to life as we take the time to listen to and watch
what you require!
Finally, Skanwear has outgrown its premises so a new building project is being implemented to provide an extra 460 square meters of offices and a
design room adjacent to our current premises. So with all this going on, and with additional new contracts in place, we have a challenging 2016
ahead of us!
As always, our team will continue to provide you with the very best level of service!

4. NEWS IN BRIEF
CASE STUDY
SPARX Page 4 skanwear.com
ROLLS-ROYCE
Since 2014, Rolls-Royce and Skanwear have been developing an Arc and
Flame Protective Clothing and PPE programme that can be adopted by Rolls-
Royce sites around the world. We are delighted to say that, after extensive
user acceptance trials, the decision has been made to recommend Skanwear
and its STRATA®
products as the preferred Arc and Flame Protective Clothing
and PPE solution provider globally.
The decision has been based on a number of key abilities;
1) Provide a global supply solution
2) Clothing and PPE range that is globally compliant
3) Clothing that is inherently safe as opposed to treated
4) Weight, fit and comfort of products for different environments e.g.
lightweight for hot climates and thermal for cold climates
5) Clothing that is bespoke in design to meet specific criteria
6) Supply mechanism to facility-based personnel and also field
service engineers working from home or hotel locations.
HS&E Senior Business Partner
Rolls-Royce plc
‘Skanwear are looking forward to working wi
Rolls-Royce as the programme begins.’
- Richard Long, Managing Director
SSE is one of the largest generators of electricity in the UK and since 1995, Skanwear has had a long and fruitful
history working with them to safe-guard against electrical accidents in the workplace.
When SSE bought out Skanwear’s original client MP Burke they were so impressed with the product and service
provided they continued their contract supplying cotton overalls, polo shirts, jackets and trousers.
The business SSE did with Skanwear continued to grow into more divisions of SSE from Power Distribution to
Power Generation and Metering. Then in 2008 we decided to upgrade the clothing specification from cotton fire
retardant (FR) clothing to inherent FR and arc flash clothing which further increased the volume of business
Skanwear did with SSE.
The relationship between Skanwear and SSE went from strength to strength with the addition of more products and
some new developments that were exclusive to SSE, including a range of IEC61482 Class 2Arc rated,
Hi-Viz clothing.
2013 saw Skanwear win a five year SSEArc and Flame Protective Clothing contract which encouraged the team here
to create more functional, comfortable and compliant clothing for SSE, something we are still doing to this day.

WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT US
Our supply to ABB is becoming more global with each day!
We are now supplying our STRATA®
range across all of the ABB sites
in Poland. The engineers love our
garments and our team is buzzed by the
excellent feedback we have received
from these guys.
Shortly after the first delivery was made
to one of the ABB sites, we received the
following: ‘All guys are delighted with
new clothing.We’ve also received the
latest box with some light jackets and
polo T-shirts. Quality and functionality is
really good.’
Brand Evolution
We have evolved our
identity into a sleeker
and stronger version of its
former self. With our new battle cry of ‘SAVING LIVES’,
we hope to send a clear message to one and all that
with every order that leaves the building we have
probably saved another life from the horror of an Arc
Flash injury.
USA
San Antonio’s strategic proximity to Houston is proving very valuable for Skanwear
with almost weekly visits to the city. Houston is the fourth most populous city in
the USA with 26 of its businesses featuring on the Fortune 500 list.
ASIA AND AUSTRALIA
‘The downturn in the mining, oil and gas sector has increased the pressure on our
Asia/Pacific team but through hard work and innovation, results are still being
achieved! We’re pleased to work with BP,Technip, Schlumberger, Rolls-Royce and
other leading energy companies in the region delivering safety innovations; for
example a new inherently flame retardant and Arc Flash resistant coverall that
weighs just 6.5oz – perfect for the hot climates we experience.’
Andrew Dowell Asia/Pacific Sales Manager
GRANITE OUTAGE EFFICIENCIES
With a successful track record completing over 1,000 outages annually, Granite
is a leading provider of turbine and compressor service solutions in the power
generation and oil and gas industries.
For every outage there is a requirement for PPE but ordering the right equipment
in the precise quantities, correctly storing it then dealing with any surplus can be a
challenge for any service manager in a pressurised environment.
Skanwear has the solution! Utilising the Skanwear Safeline®
system, a service
manager can now go online and select the actual outage type which, with just
one click, will automatically populate the total requirement of PPE and quantities
required for this specific outage type.
The order is then dispatched within 48 hours to any location around Europe.
Before the outage ends, Skanwear will contact the service manager and if there is
any surplus PPE, collection can be arranged followed by a full credit.

GLOBAL COMPLIANCE
Arc Flash is a low frequency, high consequence event
and is caused when electrical conductors are either
unintentionally short between phases or earth. To most
people working with electricity, they have never even
heard of an arc flash let alone seen one but they can have
devastating effects.
Under normal circumstances before any work is
undertaken on a conductor it must be made dead and
locked out, usually referred to as LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out).
Only in special situations where it is unreasonable in
all circumstances that a circuit has to remain live, that
permission can be granted for an employee to work live.
Before any decisions can be made, a full risk assessment
should be undertaken to identify the hazards within the
work area, and outline the controls to be taken to reduce
the risks.
Only after this process has been completed should the
use of PPE be considered and what would be most
appropriate.
YOUR 5 A DAY?
Let us start with the basics...
WHAT IS AN ARC FLASH BLAST?
So, what is all the fuss about?
1 2
3
5 6
1) Racking in a
circuit breaker.
2) A fault occurs
resulting in an
Arc Flash explosion.
3) Arc Flash engulfs
the engineers.
4) The engineers are
blasted back.
5) The engineers
start to run.
6) The engineers try
to extinguish the
burning clothes.
Five (5) to ten (10) arc explosions occur in
electric equipment every day in the United
States, according to statistics compiled by
CapSchell, Inc.
THIS IS WHAT THE FUSS IS ABOUT!
Just like lightning, arc flashes may cause personal injury
and death through electric shock, thermal burns and
physical trauma. Each injury can be life-threatening so the
risk of arc flash must be treated seriously.
Characteristics:
• Bright light which is much worse than a welding flash
and is strong enough to blind.
• Blast pressure which can destroy equipment, knock
people over and throw people up to three meters.
Ear drums can be ruptured as a result and molten
metal can be expelled into the area.
• Temperatures hotter than the sun which can ignite
anything within a given radius.

1) Do you have an electrical safety policy?
2) Does your electrical safety policy include the need
for ‘categorised’ arc flash protective clothing and PPE
to be worn?
3) Does your electrical safety policy specify that only
inherent arc flash protective clothing and PPE should
be worn?
4) Is the arc flash protective clothing and PPE you use
aligned to that which is required within your electrical
safety policy compliant?
5) Is the arc flash protective clothing and PPE you use
suitable for the climates and conditions your company
works in?
6) Is the arc flash protective clothing and PPE you issue
traceable from product source through to personal
product issue?
7) Is the arc flash protective clothing and PPE you need easy
to access – order and receive?
8) Do you have a maintenance and support programme to
ensure you are kept compliant and up to date?
ARE YOU SURE YOUR
WORKERS HAVE THE
CORRECT PROTECTION
AND PROCEDURES?
