Goal Zero: Zero Injuries
Zero Fatalities
Over the past few years, the Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) and its members
(Canadian Natural, Shell Albian Sands, Suncor, and Syncrude) have been working hard
to identify critical areas for enhanced collaboration. One exciting outcome announced
last year, was the approval of a common set of safety rules for OSSA Member sites
within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).
When in place, the OSSA 7 Regional Safety Rules will be recognized and commonly
enforced across all approved OSSA Member work sites in order to mitigate risks to
workers, reduce confusion and improve our overall regional safety performance.
When a Contractor worker moves between the OSSA Member sites they will recognize
the following common Regional Safety Rules; six of which are existing Shell Life Saving
Rules. The seventh is a new regional rule.
Regional Safety Rule #7: Do not put yourself in an unsafe position in relation to Mine
mobile heavy equipment. (Note: This is not classified as a Shell Life Saving Rule).
Over the next few months you will begin to see the OSSA Members rolling out these
rules with a target that all approved sites will be aligned by March 31st, 2015.
HAZARD HUNT HERO
We at Brookfield are extremely
proud to announce that one of our
very own team members, Tim
Derksen, has been chosen by Shell
as a Top 10 Hazard Hunt Hero for
Feb 2015. Tim submitted a Hazard
ID back in Feb when he was faced
with climbing through an obstacle of
scaffolding in order to access a roof
top. Since this was brought to our
attention the we’ve lined up trades
to repair the fixed ladders in order
that this scaffolding can be
removed. Thanks Tim! Good on Ya!

Our little newsletter has recently undergone
a transformation! The plan is to keep our
newsletter fresh with this new slicker
format and hopefully expand our viewer-
ship with the introduction of some great
new articles! We’ll also be including photos
and stories on tasks and jobs that we do
around site to share some of our success
stories. SafePoint will grow with accounts
and contributions not only from Albian site
but from other industrial Shell sites where
Brookfield manages facilities maintenance.
One of our new features will be a regular
editorial from one of our three Customer
Business Managers on Shell Industrial
Accounts at Albian, Calgary and Sarnia. Hey
Guys, thanks for stepping up, we’re looking
forward to learning about your safe sites!

Wildlife and Waste
Management
Poor waste management = poor
wildlife management
Bear issues result when staff and
contractors don’t follow waste
management policies.
Non-natural attractants to black
bears may include:
Garbage, Human food
Petroleum products (oiled rags and
gasoline produce enough odor to
attract bears)
Food/food packing or garbage left in
vehicles or in the back of trucks
Keep waste bins closed at all times
Never leave any bin propped open
It starts with you…
Message from Water Delivery Drivers
Please do not walk behind water tanker and septic
trucks when they are backing into position. You will
not be seen and the drivers must exit the vehicles
to check on your whereabouts before completing
their backing in procedures. The trucks have a loud
audible signal. If you hear this, make eye contact
with the driver and clear the area to a point where
you can be seen. Thank you! Much appreciated!
TRACTION AIDS
Are no longer mandatory as of April 1st however, your
hazard assessment must include the use of traction
aids and they are to be worn whenever required.
There is still many specific areas of ice and frost
conditions that exist, especially in the early hours of
the day. Document all hazards on you FLRA and wear
your traction aids in all areas required. Thanks!
3. March was our best month on record for Hazard
Hunt contributions (102) and for VSL and Focus
Inspection tours! The over all total was 345 and
that’s 114% for Site Completion requirements and
173% for Corporate KPI requirements. WOW! We are
extremely happy with the results… Keep up the great
work team! There’s just this one guy…

CBM LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
So much of workplace safety is about attitude. You
can do hours of training and certification but if you
don’t have the right attitude it all goes to waste.
We are fortunate at Shell Albian Sands. All our team
members have an excellent attitude with respect to
safety. The team is a tight knit family and therefore
look out for each other’s safety. This shows in our
safety statistics with over 1,360 days of goal zero
and our recording breaking hazard ID submissions.
Every team member at Shell Albian Sands
contributes to the development of a safe
organization. It doesn’t matter what your job title
is, as safety has no job titles. It is up to every team
member to look out for each other.
I am sure that we will have mountains to climb in
our future. I am confident the safety attitude our
employees have will over come any obstacles.
I will continue to promote our group within
different organizations, as we continue to be a
safety leader at Shell Albian Sands.
Stay safe, keep the right attitude.

With the upcoming turnaround
there will be many more New to
Site workers and busy camp
conditions. Let’s welcome our
new co-workers and make sure
they get the coaching and
mentoring they need to feel
safe on site while they’re here.
Take extra care on the roadways driving vehicles especially
with the additional unfamiliar pedestrians moving around.
Remind your crews about site driving requirements. Honk
horns before moving vehicles; keep windshields and lights
cleaned off; watch for pedestrians; don’t speed; use
spotters; wear seat belts; complete inspections and walk-a-
rounds; and check that beacons and strobes are functioning.
It’s going to be a very hectic workplace and driving safety is
super important. Security is ramping up and are being
trained to use radar guns. They’ll be conducting on the spot
inspections so have your driver’s license and insurance
available and be ready for random vehicle checks on site.
4. SUDOKU
HAZARDS EXPOSED!
Don’t get caught in an embarrassing situation. The loss of snow
cover has revealed our true behavior and there are many area
owners on site being caught with their junk showing! We’ve
seen some pretty badly littered areas including smoke pits and
yards, many with types of garbage laying around that will attract
wildlife. It’s up to each of us to do our part and make sure our
areas are clean and tidy. We’ll be out taking pictures to
document the worst offenders and getting the area owners
notified to get their junk put away or cleaned up! Yuck…
Put the Safety Sauce
on everything you do!
The winner of our Safety
Slogan Contest this year
produced a humorous adage
and, while some may say
controversial, we think it’s
going to draw attention to
working safely which is
ultimately a good thing! A big
thanks to Dave Fenniak for this
one… and hey guys the T-shirts
and hard hat stickers have
arrived! We’ll be handing them
out to serious Hazard Hunters,
and for Acts of Safety &
Leadership and for performing
great Safety Interventions!
