Sparta was a highly militaristic society in ancient Greece centered around loyalty to the state and military service. Spartan boys underwent rigorous state-sponsored military training and socialization from age 7. Although Spartan women had more freedom and status than elsewhere in Greece, Spartan men were full-time soldiers supported by helot slave labor. Sparta's dominance was short-lived, as they were defeated by Thebes in 371 BC, beginning a period of decline.
