Christianity played an important role in Spain's colonization of the Americas, as many conquistadors used spreading the faith as justification for conquest. While Christianity was enforced on native peoples, some did embrace it willingly. It became a prominent part of culture, as indigenous buildings and towns incorporated Catholic symbols. Conquering lands also allowed Spain to search for gold from Aztec, Maya, and Inca civilizations, which wore large amounts, motivating further conquest. Conquistadors received prestige, power, land, and money after successful expeditions, including tribute from native peoples in exchange for spreading Christianity.
