The Barnsley captain led the Tykes to Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success at Wembley in early April, and he is back attheworld-famous stadium, again, this Sunday when he leads his team into the League 1 play-off final against Millwall. Promotion to the English Champion- ship is up for grabs, and West Cork’s finest soccer export has his sights set on a glorious end to the season. ‘The prize at the end of this is fantas- tic,’ Hourihane (25) told The Southern Star during his short trip home to Ban- don last weekend. ‘The club got £500,000 for winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final but I think it’s worth £8 million if we win the play-off final on Sunday. The prize is so big – Championship football next season – and we’ll do all we can to get over the line. ‘This is a bigger game than the John- stone’s Paint Trophy final, without a doubt. You’d swap that winner’s medal for a League 1 promotion final winner’s medal. ‘Winning the Johnstone’s Paint Tro- phy final was a special day and a fantas- tic occasion for the club, but to win promotion offtheback ofaseason’s work, would be a lot more satis- fying. If you get promoted, you earned it over the season – and it would be fantastic if we can do that at Wembley on Sunday.’ Former Bandon AFC and Douglas Hall underage ace Hourihane (pictured) has been in sparkling form for Barnsley again this season, scoring 11 goals and assisting a further 17 as he inspired his side into the play-offs and the 6-1 aggregate semi-final win against Walsall. It was tough for a variety of reasons, such as the lack of household utilities and mobil- ity, so when Muintir na Tire was established the people of Ballinadee wholeheartedly embraced it as a way of rais- ing peoples’ living standards. MuintirnaTirewasamove- ment for improvement. Tom Hales, the War of Independ- ence veteran and politician – was instrumental in setting upthegroupinBallinadeeand from the outset they were de- termined to provide the com- munity with a hall– a place for communalanddevelopmental meetings, as well as a place where they could socialise. Membersofthecommunity contributed to the cost, there- by becoming shareholders in the building. Shareholders, or stakeholders, is a term that’s very much in vogue today as an indicator that people have a vested interest, and that is very much the case here. Ballinadee Hall was built on the land of local farmer, DanielMcCarthy,andO’Brien Builders from Bandon were contracted to build it. From the very start the hall was a success. It became a hive of activ- ity; a place where regular meetings were held, as well as classes and, from time to time,dramaticproductions.It iswitharealsenseofnostalgia that some older members of the community remembered the dancehall days, especially the ‘pioneer socials.’ But as people became more mobile they started to move further afield and travelled to nearby towns to frequent thebiggerdancehalls,suchas Bandon Town Hall. Ballinadee Hall was not, however, neglected. For a time, it became a focal point for the younger members of the community and served as a venue for basketball and badminton. It was also used for Macra field days, and fashion shows, andconcertsduringthe1980s, but the real change – in soci- ety and the usage of the hall – came in the 1990s. Over the last quarter of a century, the building has stood quietly, biding its time. But soon, very soon, it will once again be a safe space for the young, the old, and those in between. ThepeopleofBallinadeeareattemptingtoinjectnew lifeintotheirarea,writesJackieKeogh,andthey’re startingatthecentreoflocallife–thecommunityhall For some time the village of Ballinadee, which is nestled in the heart of the countryside between Kinsale and Bandon, has been witnessing its own decline. Community life there had dwindled ... until now. The people of Ballinadee havedecidedtotakeaction.At a meeting on March 16th last, they agreed to make the ne- glected community hall their first priority and breathe new life into it. Usage of Ballinadee Hall hadfallenoffsomuchoverthe years that it stood as almost as an external representation of the decline of this small rural community. Alotofpeopleturnedupfor that community meeting and it was clear from the energy andtheenthusiasmexpressed that it would not be long be- fore the hall would once again be an important focal point in village life. The final elements of the set disappeared last Saturday morning, as the last trucks left the area after weeks of preparation , filming and dis- mantling. With the temporary track- way removed, there is now a very clear path to the head, and the adjacent road, which was once just a partially over- grown dirt track, has been cleared and roughly surfaced. Michael Collins House Museum The newly opened Michael Collins House Museum in Clonakilty is located in a wonderfully restored Georgian building at No.7 Emmet Square.The museum tells the story of Ireland’s struggle for independence focusing on Tadgh an Asna,O’ Donovan Rossa and of course,Michael Collins.As well as a number of displays there is an audio-visual room and a gift shop. Perched on the edge of a long sea inlet, this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga). Galley Head Lighthouse Galley Head Lighthouse gives superb views over the ocean. The lighthouse was built in 1875 and it was from here that the keepers would have witnessed the tragic loss of the Lusitania in 1915. It is also claimed that Ray Bradbury based his story‘The Fog Horn’on a reported sighting of a giant sea serpent off Galley Head in the 1800s. MizenVisitor Centre, Mizen Head Situated at the end of the Mizen Peninsula,the visitor centre is a fantastic place to visit. The recently refurbished bridge across the massive crevice in the rock is not for the faint-hearted, but a stunning place to take photographs,or simply listen to the waves crashing below.The keeper’s kitchen and bedroom at the signal station at the end of the walk has been preserved as it was,as a tribute to the lifestyle of the men of the Irish Lights.There are many fascinating displays to be seen,both here at the signal station and back at the interactive visitor centre at the start. Charles Fort, Kinsale Charles Fort is open all year to visitors and is one of the best surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort. Much of its original 1678 construction remains. The fort was actively used by the military until 1922.It is also a popular civil weddings venue now,too. Illnacullen Gardens, Garinish Island, Glengarriff Located in the sheltered waters of Glengarriff harbour, Garinish Island is home to one of the most luscious gardens in Ireland. There is so much to see on the island,from the Martello tower,to alluring walled gardens,the Japanese gardens,the Casita,hidden beaches and the 100 steps that leave you with a sense of enchantment.There are ferries which operate from Glengarriff and on the way,you will pass the seal colony where the languid creatures can be spotted taking in the sun. The Barnsley captain led the Tykes to Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success at Wembley in early April, and he is back attheworld-famous stadium, again, this Sunday when he leads his team into the League 1 play-off final against Millwall. Promotion to the English Champion- ship is up for grabs, and West Cork’s finest soccer export has his sights set on a glorious end to the season. ‘The prize at the end of this is fantas- tic,’ Hourihane (25) told The Southern Star during his short trip home to Ban- don last weekend. ‘The club got £500,000 for winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final but I think it’s worth £8 million if we win the play-off final on Sunday. The prize is so big – Championship football next season – and we’ll do all we can to get over the line. ‘This is a bigger game than the John- stone’s Paint Trophy final, without a doubt. You’d swap that winner’s medal for a League 1 promotion final winner’s medal. ‘Winning the Johnstone’s Paint Tro- phy final was a special day and a fantas- tic occasion for the club, but to win promotion offtheback ofaseason’s work, would be a lot more satis- fying. It was tough for a variety of reasons, such as the lack of household utilities and mobil- ity, so when Muintir na Tire was established the people of Ballinadee wholeheartedly embraced it as a way of rais- ing peoples’ living standards. Tom Hales, the War of Independ- ence veteran and politician – was instrumental in setting upthegroupinBallinadeeand from the outset they were de- termined to provide the com- munity with a hall– a place for communalanddevelopmental meetings, as well as a place where they could socialise. Membersofthecommunity contributed to the cost, there- by becoming shareholders in the building. Shareholders, or stakeholders, is a term that’s very much in vogue today as an indicator that people have a vested interest, and that is very much the case here. Ballinadee Hall was built on the land of local farmer, DanielMcCarthy,andO’Brien Builders from Bandon were contracted to build it. From the very start the hall was a success. It became a hive of activ- ity; a place where regular meetings were held, as well as classes and, from time to time,dramaticproductions.It iswitharealsenseofnostalgia that some older members of the community remembered the dancehall days, especially the ‘pioneer socials.’ But as people became more mobile they started to move further afield and travelled to nearby towns to frequent thebiggerdancehalls,suchas Bandon Town Hall. Ballinadee Hall was not, however, neglected. For a time, it became a focal point for the younger members of the community and served as a venue for basketball and badminton. It was also used for Macra field days, and fashion shows, andconcertsduringthe1980s, but the real change – in soci- ety and the usage of the hall – came in the 1990s. Over the last quarter of a century, the building has stood quietly, biding its time. But soon, very soon, it will once again be a safe space for the young, the old, and those in between. The people of Ballinadee havedecidedtotakeaction.At a meeting on March 16th last, they agreed to make the ne- glected community hall their first priority and breathe new life into it. Usage of Ballinadee Hall hadfallenoffsomuchoverthe years that it stood as almost as an external representation of the decline of this small rural community. Perched on the edge of a long sea inlet, this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga). MizenVisitor Centre, Mizen Head Situated at the end of the Mizen Peninsula,the visitor centre is a fantastic place to visit. The recently refurbished bridge across the massive crevice in the rock is not for the faint-hearted, but a stunning place to take photographs,or simply listen to the waves crashing below.The keeper’s kitchen and bedroom at the signal station at the end of the walk has been preserved as it was,as a tribute to the lifestyle of the men of the Irish Lights.There are many fascinating displays to be seen,both here at the signal station and back at the interactive visitor centre at the start. Charles Fort, Kinsale Charles Fort is open all year to visitors and is one of the best surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort. Much of its original 1678 construction remains. The fort was actively used by the military until 1922.It is also a popular civil weddings venue now,too. Illnacullen Gardens, Garinish Island, Glengarriff Located in the sheltered waters of Glengarriff harbour, Garinish Island is home to one of the most luscious gardens in Ireland. There is so much to see on the island,from the Martello tower,to alluring walled gardens,the Japanese gardens,the Casita,hidden beaches and the 100 steps that leave you with a sense of enchantment.There are ferries which operate from Glengarriff and on the way,you will pass the seal colony where the languid creatures can be spotted taking in the sun.
