VIEWING AT SLANE CASTLE, CO MEATH
For the 6th annual sale at Slane Castle of things from country houses Adams are pleased to present this eclectic offering, much with interesting provenance.
Although few houses retain their original contents intact (and what auctioneer could sleep soundly at the thought of such?) it was always thus, as families have inherited, accumulated, acquired, given away, sold, replaced or lost their possessions. “Collections”, an awkward word for that which fills a house by choice or chance, now seem to be formed and dispersed quicker than before and perhaps the peculiar patina acquired by portraits of supposed or real ancestors, gathering dust or arrow holes caused by bored children, is not as apparent. Certainly there seems to be less of fossilised dog turd, dead bats and skeletal birds to frighten the wary valuer away from the attics and basements of damp country houses.
More from these houses has survived, contrary to the popular narrative of destruction, than was perhaps as- sumed. Most silver was sent into bank safety during the troubles and the amount of Irish Georgian silver extant is consequently large. Worse was the fashion of applying to existing pieces the dreaded “later” decoration. Much furniture and painting of course, was dispersed and the Irishness thereof discounted until the heroic work of the Knight of Glin redressed the balance. With this awakened appreciation of the achievements of indigenous crafts- men, painters and builders many houses that would have been lost to a jaundiced interpretation of heritage are now wonderfully restored and full of good things again.
Officialdom has followed, perhaps not always on a logical path but so much has been done that only one or two generations ago would never have been. Budgets to acquire items of national importance are tight but one would hope that the scagliola table, a homage to Maria Edgeworth whose writing laid a foundation for defining the Irish character will find a suitable home (Lot 744) and one can but admire the skill of Arthur Jones’ 1851 exhibition piece (Lot 629), or imagine the goodness of the Quaker Unthank and his Limerick jug (Lot 546) or dream of the wealth that ‘The Black Stuff ’ gave to the Guinness family (Lot 708 (bust)).
After the success and controversy caused by last years seminar we want to bring it back bigger and better with a breakdown of where flavor comes from and why age is just a number, it doesn't tell you anything about the quality of the contents of your bottle of whisky.
It’s an age-old question: when it comes to spirits, does older mean better? This seminar will challenge even the most seasoned palates to answer that question tasting some of the rarest and unique whiskies from Diageo’s warehouses in Scotland many of these whiskies have never been tasted by anyone outside of Diageo before.
The Diageo Whisky team, including those behind of some of the most iconic single malts from Talisker and Lagavulin, will be joined again by World-renowned author Dave Broom to lead a blind tasting of whiskies with vastly varying ages from Diageo’s stocks including liquid that has never been offered to the public before.
Attendees will hear how single malts and blends have evolved since the beginning of the 20th Century through to the modern day by changes in production, through to the corks used. They will also learn how multiple flavors from different types of casks make up what we know as a single malt, as they taste the whiskies.
The panel will ask participants for their opinions of each, before the grand revealing of the names and, more importantly, their ages. Attendees will discover what their favorite whisky was, followed by an opportunity to ask questions about each.
Will the older whiskies live up to the hype? There were some real revelations last year and this year will be no exception.

VINYL RECORDS TODAY!
Market and Social Context in Spain.
The vinyl record, a medium that some label as imperfect and annoying while others treasure it, appears to be experiencing a comeback from near-extinction. It has an important role in a society in which new technologies and portability are taking over the “oldies”.
This work tries to explain the possible re-introduction of the vinyl record, by taking a global look at different media.
We are going to have to skim through the next three chapters to get an understanding of the possible hypothesis of the “re-introduction of the vinyl record in our society”.
In the following paragraphs, we present a short description of each of the chapters, in chronological order.

Furness is a Georgian house of great character in the heart of Co. Kildare. Built in about 1740 for Richard Nevill, it was attributed by the late Knight of Glin to Francis Bindon, the architect and portrait painter who created some of Ireland’s most elegant country houses, including Woodstock and Castlemorres in Co. Kilkenny; he also collaborated with Richard Cassels on the design of Russborough, which he completed after Cassels’ death in 1751. Additions were made later in the century, including the fine plasterwork by Michael Stapleton in the drawingroom. Following the death of a later Richard Nevill in 1822 Furness passed to [edit] the Beauman family, and in 1897 was bought by N.J. Synnott. By this time it had become dilapidated, and the new owner carried out a thorough restoration, while retaining the character of the original building. In 1962 the view from the entrance front was embellished with a dramatic addition – a column surmounted by the figure of Mercury, formerly at Dangan in Co. Meath (the boyhood home of the Duke of Wellington) and brought to Furness as a 21st birthday present to David Synnott from his father. In the 1980s Furness featured in the TV adaptation of the Irish RM stories of Somerville and Ross, in which it appeared as Castle Knox, the home of Sir Valentine and Lady Knox and their daughter Sally. David Synott sold the house in 1987 and it became the home of Patrick and Louise Guinness in 1994. Patrick is the son of the Hon. Desmond Guinness and his first wife Mariga (the Princess Marie Gabrielle von Urach), co-founders of the Irish Georgian Society; Louise was a noted designer of classical interiors in London. Together they reroofed the house and arranged a light and cheerful theme for Furness, including paint schemes, wallpapers, rugs, lamps and four-poster beds. As their 4 children have ‘flown the nest’, Mr and Mrs Guinness have decided to downsize and sell their home and many of the contents. The sale includes period furniture, paintings and drawings, wonderful silver and objets d’art, rare examples of carriages and coaches, garden furniture, and statuary etc., A fine library of books, important manuscript letters and maps, which give an insight into Patrick’s interest in local and Irish history relating to Irish politics going back to the patriot and Irish Whig parties

MARTY CULLEN (20th / 21st century
Irish) Mandela, mixed media, 27in x 22in
in attractive frame.
Note: According to the artist, this is
a depiction of the young Mandela
in his days as a militant lawyer. The
idea of the primitive instincts of
freedom is juxtaposed with the ideas
of jurisprudence and rationalism. The
notion of creating a coherent visual
narrative, incorporating tribalism,
revolutionary idealism and harsh
rationalism are the recurring ideas
behind this visual essay on arguably the
greatest man of modern times.
Marty Cullen, from Dungannon is a
graduate of law and political philosophy.
He is a leading campaigner for the
rights of profoundly disabled children as
well as a sculptor, fine arts, film maker
and photographer. [see galleryonthehill.

In 1959, as a young army officer, Allen Denton-Miller was
given the opportunity to study Swahili to interpretership
level in East Africa and at London University’s School of
Asian and African Studies. (The British Government's
aim was to produce a cadre of officers with the language
skills necessary to assist in future African independence
negotiations). But be that as it may, the sights, sounds and
smells of his first magical after-dark arrival in Dar es Salaam
for a tour of duty with the King's African Rifles remained
vivid and were the beginning of a lasting love affair with
Africa!
Since those early days he has worked and travelled
extensively throughout the continent. Visits to numerous
countries including the Congo, Nigeria, Senegal,
Ethiopia,Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Zambia and many others
provided opportunities for him to acquire examples of tribal
art at source encouraging him to form what has become
an eclectic, large and somewhat whimsical collection.
This is, therefore, not a collection assembled at great cost
and with irrefutable provenance from the world's leading
tribal art dealers, galleries and international fine art auction
houses. The artifacts illustrated here have been acquired by
him personally, mainly in Africa, over more than fifty years.
He does not in any way claim to be an ''expert'', merely a
reasonably educated and avid collector.
Having finally reached the age where dispersal makes more
sense than acquisition he is now offering the collection for
sale in the hope that it will provide as much enjoyment to
others as it has to him.
While every effort has been made to verify origin, age and
provenance, in the case of artifacts purchased from Africa's
auction houses, deceased estates and roadside vendors,
this has not always been possible. However, additional
photographs and further information can be made available
on request.

mask, known as Gelede, is from the
Anago region in Nigeria's south west.
The scale-like attachment to the head-
dress above the red band is thought to
represent the axe blades or edun ora
of Shango signifying the power of the
god of thunder. The three tribal scars
on the cheeks are diagnostic as is the
triangular representation of the ears, the
closed eyes and the pouting lips. This
old mask has deeply encrusted patina

A RARE CHOKWE INITIATION BIRD
MASK, (wood, deep patina) Chokwe,
Angola/DRC,of wood with deep patina,
30cm high, 25cm wide, 60cm long
approx.
This mask represents a bird not unlike
a Gamecock or helmeted Guinea
Fowl. The mask is of a unique purely
zoomorphic design having an articulated
lower bill with a prominent carved
tongue, circular eye holes and encrusted
patina. Examples of ''bird'' masks are
found among the Dan and We and the
Baga of Guinea and also in Gambia
and Senegal. However, all of these
have 'beaks' only as extensions of
humanoid faces. None bears such close
resemblance to the unique zoomorphic
mask illustrated here which is used only
rarely in Chokwe initiation rites.

particular mask represents a bird not

profile, thick dark patina and articulated
lower bills with prominent carved
tongues. Vestiges of the original bark
costume remain. Good condition overall.

CARNIVAL MASK, Dan, Ivory Coast

paper 35cm high. 30cm wide
This painted mask from WE/NGERE
peoples of Liberia and the Ivory Coast
shares many features with similar
masks common among the Dan. The
vertical line on the forehead, tubular
eyes, triangular nose and open mouth
with metal teeth are common features.
Designed to inspire fear, masks of this
type are now more commonly used for
entertainment rather than for traditional
rituals. Although painted in black,
white and red this is quite evidently
an old mask having an old French
language newspaper sewn into the cloth
surrounding the face.

closely connected to ceremonies relating
to the mysteries surrounding death and
the dead and are brought out primarily

unusual in having a base which suggests
it was made to stand on a family alter
or shrine. The mask is traditional in
shape with a small face at the centre
with slit eyes and an extremely small
mouth indicating that the dead have
no power of speech. There are smaller
and more rudimentary faces at the apex
and extremities of the horns. The mask
is coloured with dark pigment and tree
sap which produces a golden colour. The

AN UNUSUAL FUNERARY/PLANK
MASK, showing two contrasting styles -
Goli/Baule, Ivory Coast. This particularly
interesting and unusual mask showing
a combination of two distinct styles.
The lower panel shows the traditional
features of a young woman with eyes
and mouth closed as in death but with
the scarification and hair style very
carefully rendered. The upper mask is
in typical Goli style with protuberant
eyes showing tears and a grimacing
mouth. The mask is surmounted with
buffalo or possibly cow horns indicating
the high status of the young woman.
The mask carries a decorative carved
design linking both halves and shows
strong traces of red and white pigment.
There is therefore reason to suppose
that this mask may have been danced
at the funeral of a young girl of some
importance.

AN UNUSUAL FUNERARY MASK
WITH LARGE BIRD FIGURE, Baule,
Ivory Coast , with red and white pigment.
This piece has a powerful masculine
style of mask possibly crafted especially
for the funeral rites or anniversary of
the death of an important chief. The
heavy features show closed eyes and a
stoppered mouth indicating death and
inability any longer to see, hear or speak
while the powerfully rendered royal
hornbill totem indicates the importance
of the deceased both in life and in the
spirit world. The mask has been heavily
coated with red and white pigment and
has traces of palm oil used as a libation
to entreat the spirits.

A VERY LARGE FUNERARY
ELEPHANT MASK, Baule, Ivory Coast,
with white pigment. This powerful and
distinctly masculine mask shows the
usual characteristics of a funerary
object. The features are powerful, with
a great beak of a nose, pursed lips
and a carefully trimmed beard. The
eyes are shown closed as in death and
final repose. The head is capped with
a chief's ceremonial stool signifying
authority. The whole is topped by a
carefully rendered totem of an intricately
decorated elephant, an unmistakable
symbol of strength and prestige. One
may suppose that this mask was
specially created to be danced during
the funeral rites of a powerful chief
and thereafter to stand guard over his
remains and act as a link to the living
from the spirit world of the ancestors.
The mask shows traces of white
pigment (the colour of death) which has
been used to colour the beard and hair
of the subject showing age and to pick
out the detail of the carved stool and
symbolic elephant. Shows signs of age
but very little damage.

A GURU/BAULE MESSENGER BIRD
MASK MODELLED WITH HERON, Very
elegant with good patina), Ivory Coast
BIRD MASK
Origin: BAULE, Ivory Coast
The Baule and Guro have a long
tradition of fashioning elegant masks
which combine elements both human
and animal. The human faces, often
female, are finely rendered with modestly
downcast eyes, elegant noses and
pouting lips. Tribal scarification and
complex hairstyles are carefully rendered.
In this case the hair style continues into
the image of a tall crested bird, probably
a heron, with what appears to be a small
octopus or squid in its beak.
The mask shows traces of red and
white pigment with slight damage and a
repairable split to the bird's beak.

A LARGE HEAVY ANTIQUE
FIGURE, Motherhood, of wood
with encrusted patina, Bambara,
Mali/Gui.
This large, very heavy and
unquestionably antique Bambara
sculpture is the virtual twin of a
similar statue, almost certainly
by the same sculptor, on display
in the African Collection of the
Metropolitan Museum of New
York. (See illustration on page
170 of the excellent source book
''Black Africa'' Masks, Sculpture,
Jewlery).
Symbols of motherhood
illustrated by dignified
representations of pregnant or
breast-feeding women are of
considerable significance to the
Bambara tribal group both as
promoting fertility and serving as
a link to the spirit world and the
world of the ancestors. Because
pregnant or breast-feeding
woman do not menstruate they
are seen as being closer to old
age and death and therefore
closer to, and more able to
communicate with, the spirit
world. Figures in this genre are
not strictly representational but
intended rather to radiate the
calm dignity of motherhood
generically and to celebrate the
perpetuation of life

imposing figure was bought by

sacred objects to be placed in a bowl

bowls come in different shapes and
sizes but the potency of the magic is

a female figure. Women, and particularly

A TALL SENUFO ALTAR GUARDIAN FIGURE, Ivory Coast, of
light wood. This rather strange Senufo wooden statue may very
well be a caricature of an actual person used as a guardian

dead. The figure has a hugely exaggerated and very fine hair
style and the face bears the diagnostic scar patterns. The
stance is typical of Senufo statuary with flexed knees and arms
with hands forward. The figure, which is carved from unusually
pale and light wood, is standing on a circular base similar to
that used for rhythm pounder figures although this figure is
much less substantial overall.

the medicine horn suggest his care and expertise in healing

faded red pigment and there is a cavity for the insertion of
some magical ingredient. The carefully rendered whitened face
invokes the colour of death and it is not too fanciful to imagine
this as being a memorial for a young woman. The statue would

erotic symbolism is obvious. The doll is mounted on a wooden

of exchange. The cast body, which has a
traditional openwork base, shows signs
of early repair. There is an ornamental
frieze at top and bottom with an applied
sunburst design and eight small studs.
The body bears faint signs of an Arabic
cursive style decoration The heavy lid
sports a pair of mythical beasts, possibly
spirit leopards, depicted in the act of
devouring a goat. 21 x 15cm (approx)

A BRONZE FIGURE OF AN OBA
WITH SWORD AND SPEAR, Benin,
Edo, Nigeria, possibly 19th century. The
figure of an Oba or perhaps a General
of the state of Benin wearing a tall early
period coral bead headdress and coral
necklace. The dress is traditional for the
19th century and the figure carries a
ceremonial sword and spear.
Notwithstanding, the figure is
accoutered for ceremony rather than
war. The figure has been cast by the
traditional lost wax method and is well
finished with appropriate patina

A SMALL FIGURE OF A COURTIER,
Benin, Edo, Nigeria, in bronze manilla,
propbably 19th century. This small
antique bronze, cast by Benin craftsmen
using the lost wax method, shows
a gentleman of the court or perhaps
a merchant holding what appears to
be two of the many types of bronze
Manilla or 'bracelet money' which were
introduced by Portuguese traders in
the early 1500's and used as currency
in West and Central Africa for larger
transactions such as the purchase of
slaves until finally superseded by paper
money in the late 1940's. Well detailed
and showing good patina. 18 x 9cm

the traditional lost wax method. In
this old and highly detailed work the
Oba wears the traditional royal robes
and pangolin hide armour of the late

fashion introduced in the 19th century.

A LARGE OLD CAST BRONZE
CEREMONIAL PIPE, Bamoun,
Cameroon or Mali, decorated with
elephant and figures. The stem is made
in two parts, one part being openwork
filigree. The mouthpiece is, however,
a recent rather crude replacement
The lower part of the bowl is in the
shape of an elephant's head with the
tusks serving as part of a stand. The
bowl proper is decorated with small
figures in various poses. The quality of
workmanship and casting are extremely
high. This is an unusually large specimen
of this type of ornamental pipe which
was probably intended for ceremonial
use only. A unique piece in very good
condition for its evident age, 57 x 12cm
(approx).

A PAIR OF EDO BRONZE COURT
DWARVES, Benin, Nigeria, beautifully
cast with good patina. Cast in bronze by
the traditional ''lost wax'' method these
fully detailed figures are in the tradition
of the dwarves (usually two) retained by
various Obas (rulers) of Benin at their
courts from at least the 15th century.
Dwarves, in the tradition of court jesters
everywhere, were kept principally as
entertainers but sometimes also as spies
and minor officials. One of their primary
functions was to detect evil aimed at
the ruler and to prevent harm coming
to him. They were allowed considerable
licence in performing their function.
These complementary figures are true
to type, have been carefully crafted
and exceptionally well cast by a skilled
foundryman. Excellent weight, condition
and patina. 42 x 18cm approx.

A PAIR OF OLD BRONZE OGRE
STATUETTES, , Bamoun, Cameroon/
Mali, original purpose unknown. This
pair of small ogre-like figures (male and
female) is finely detailed and cast by the
traditional ''lost wax'' method, probably
from Cameroon or possibly Mali. The
features, bodily characteristics and items
of dress and decoration are carefully
detailed and the pose suggests that the
figures had some specific purpose. The
arms are raised and the hands cupped
as if holding a bar. Each figure has a
carefully made hole in the middle of the
back suggesting that they may have
been fixed to an item of royal furniture
such as a trunk. Very good condition and
patina. 20 x 15cm (approx)

AN UNUSUAL SPADE SHAPED
COPPER AND BRASS FACED
RELIQUARY GUARDIAN, Mahongwe,
Gabon. Usually known as Reliquary
figures from their function of standing
guard over the woven baskets or
medieval style reliquary caskets which
hold the bones of important ancestors
these statues are sacred to Bwitti known
as the Spirit of the Ancestors. Through
them contact is sought with the spirits
of the ancestors and advice requested
on various family problems. Although
vaguely anthropomorphic in form their
rudimentary features, round eyes, sharp
noses and vestigial mouths are unsettling
although the figures are always easily
recognizable as human. Constructed of
metal strips (in this case copper) over
a wooden frame the bases follow a
traditional elliptical pattern. These small
reliquary figures ar in fair condition with
considerable oxidisation evident. Sold as
a pair. 45 x 16cm (approx)

A NAJA SHAPED BRASS AND ROPE
RELIQUARY GUARDIAN, Mahongwe,
Gabon. This old reliquary figure is crafted
from beaten brass strips laid over a
wooden frame with copper detailing.
The rudimentary features are traditional
and show the usual button eyes, beaked
nose and small pursed mouth. The body
is merely hinted at with the wooden shaft
being bound with rope to support the
two rudimentary arms. Guardian figures
of this type were inserted into the bone
boxes woven of rattan in which were
kept the bones of favoured ancestors.
Their purpose was to protect and to
serve as a conduit for communication
with the ancestors. 46 x 16cm.

GUARDIAN, Mahongwe, Gabon. Crafted
of brass strips over a wooden frame
and showing similar coffee bean eyes
sharp beaky nose but with the mouth
stopped by a brass strip. Mounted on
the traditional ovoid wooden stand.

served as a conduit for conversing with
ancestral spirits and would also perform
the duties of a guardian for the family
shrine. 48 x 18cm.

A GRANARY DOOR WITH LOCK, Fang,

hut, cattle kraal and one or more small
thatched granneries raised on stilts to
deter vermin.

thieves. This door is of soft wood which
has been carved with tribal figures
and stained with black, red and white
