Play
…what a load of rubbish!!
Play: How much does it cost
when it’s ‘shop bought’?
 “The average British shopper spent £508
on toys and games for each child in 2013”
 The UK toy market is worth £2.4 billion
 The UK is the second highest spender on
toys in the world
- Daily Telegraph, May 23rd 2015
Shop bought toys & games…….
how long will they last??
Take a look at this picture…
what do you notice?
What messages
does this picture
send us about
children’s play?
…compared
to this one?
Why is play important?
 Play is a fundamental aspect of learning
and development.
 The Early Years in particular are a crucial
time for developing creative thinking.
 It is important for parents and educators
to give children the opportunity to benefit
from a variety of high quality play
experiences.
What does ‘high quality’
mean?
High quality play experiences are:
 Open ended
 Involve ‘active learning’
 Challenging
 Child initiated
 Contain opportunities to ‘problem solve’
 Engaging
 Inclusive
 Enjoyable!
Does ‘high quality’ have to
mean high cost?
 The short answer to this question is NO!
 By using recycled materials and re-purposing unwanted
items children can create toys and games themselves that
help them explore their own ideas and encourage them to
use creative thought processes and solve problems.
 These items can also, more often than not, be recycled
when children have finished playing with them. This could
ultimately lead to reduced waste from toys ending up in
land fill. In other words reducing the ‘cost’ to the
environment.
Let’s look at some examples….
Plastic Bottles
Now looking at these items you won’t
see a ‘load of rubbish’… you’ll see
endless possibilities for high quality,
play that really is
‘affordable’

  • 32. Why is play important?  Play is a fundamental aspect of learning and development.  The Early Years in particular are a crucial time for developing creative thinking.  It is important for parents and educators to give children the opportunity to benefit from a variety of high quality play experiences.

This could ultimately lead to reduced waste from toys ending up in land fill. In other words reducing the ‘cost’ to the environment. Let’s look at some examples….
