- 7. 7 Our Funding in England We give out money in three ways: • £300 - £10,000 through National Lottery Awards for All • Over £10,000 through new Reaching Communities • Over £10,000 for people to work together through Partnerships Under £10,000 National Lottery Awards for All: our most popular funding stream, providing a quick and simple way to get small Lottery grants of between £300 and £10,000. Over £10,000 Reaching Communities: Flexible funding over £10,000 for up to five years to organisations in England who want to take action on the issues that matter to people and communities. Partnerships: Through our Partnerships funding, we make grants over £10,000 for organisations which work together with a shared set of goals and values.
- 9. www.biglotteryfund.org.uk What we look for in organisations we support People –led We’re looking for meaningful involvement of the people you’re working with in the development, design and delivery of your activity. We want to hear how the community you are working with has influenced your project and will continue to shape its delivery. Strengths Based We want to hear how you will be making the most of, and building on, the skills and experiences of people and what already exists within communities. Connected We want to ensure you have a good understanding of what others are doing, developing good working relationships. So tell us: - How you have connected with other relevant organisations and how your idea complements what they are doing - How you have used these relationships to develop your idea.
- 10. www.biglotteryfund.org.uk We Can’t Fund: • activities where a profit will be distributed for private gain • religious activity (although we are able to fund religious organisations if they are providing benefit for the wider community) • activity that replaces government funding, for example, we can only fund school activities that are additional to the curriculum • activities that benefit individuals, rather than a wider community • retrospective costs and loan repayments.

- Key messages Replacing the ‘one size’ fits all model with local, more flexible ways of working so that we find the best ideas in communities. A flexible mix of funding, being less risk averse and open to innovation, more meaningful collaborations with communities and other funders, supporting sector skills and capabilities and sharing learning. More listening and more visible – an improved customer experience. Strengths based – is this what matters to the community Less fixed processes and timelines – more ability to tailor processes around idea - we have simplified our materials and are taking a more flexible, customer led, proportionate and relational approach to our grant making. Our People Led approach will focus on the local knowledge, strengths and assets that people can draw upon in their local community and the potential in their ideas. We now have three, clear funding priorities that relate to all of our funding: early action, stronger relationships and places and spaces. We want our funded projects to be community driven and to be delivered from locally rooted organisations that can demonstrate user support and involvement as much as can be expected. This guiding principle is embedded within our new Strategic Framework, which has led to important changes to how we will now make awards. More Collaboration – work with people and communities and sector – share information to bring together organisations who have the same goals Core products - A4A is online / RC and Partnerships no standardised forms. We want to support organisational development – support strong groups and partnerships and we recognise that this means not just project funding on its own. We are taking a CI approach – listen and act on feedback and ideas from our customers and staff. This will evolve. We want to celebrate our grant holder successes. Relationships held locally – providing decisions and feedback at the earliest possible opportunity – customer led (pace and requirements) – prioritising smaller grants to groups – proportionate approach Celebrating successes and supporting and learning from when things don’t work – exploring ways to help you tell your story Have to understand that there are pressures for funding – look at local picture, what we already fund (themes and geographic areas) – we have challenging decisions to make so it’s about knowing what else is going on in your local area and seeing how you can share ideas and resources to develop even better ideas (not always possible though) Your idea has been developed by the people who will benefit – you’ll support what’s already working well – interested in new approaches – has to add value to other local activity. We will support organisations and ideas, not just projects and use local intelligence to make good judgements about what we fund. We want to fund community projects - projects where people receiving benefits have had a significant input. It’s about organisations knowing the people that they are working with, so locally rooted organisations and projects that are genuinely designed and run by local people. For example, a group of people who have things in common and wish to come together to address something that is important to them.
