French explorer Antoine de Bougainville discovered Tahiti in 1768 and was impressed by the health, beauty, and temperament of the indigenous people. Similarly, Captain James Cook made several voyages to the Pacific Islands shortly after and found the islanders to be kind and gentle. However, in 1779 a group of islanders on Hawaii killed Captain Cook and four marines, disemboweling and baking Cook's body as a sign of respect, showing the islanders were not as peaceful as initially presented.

Captain Langlois decided the South Island would be perfect for France to colonize after a successful whaling expedition. The first French settlement was established in 1840 in Akaroa. In 1837, a Frenchman named Baron Charles de Thierry arrived in Northland and claimed land, declaring himself the sovereign chief of New Zealand. He tried unsuccessfully to get France or the Netherlands to form a colony with him as governor. In 1838, a French company purchased land in Banks Peninsula but when settlers arrived in 1840, they discovered the area had been claimed by Britain following the Treaty of Waitangi. The French established a settlement at Akaroa, which still retains some French influence in place names today.

Edward Gibbon Wakefield developed a colonization scheme to purchase land from Maori tribes in New Zealand and sell it at a higher price to British settlers, forming the New Zealand Company. The first passenger ship arrived in Wellington Harbor on January 22, 1840, dumping settlers and their belongings on the beach amid wind, sand, thick bush and swamps. Despite facing many hardships like earthquakes, isolation and learning new survival skills, by the first anniversary of their arrival on January 22, 1841, almost 2,500 settlers were living in Wellington.

They walked for weeks, setting up camps along the way and avoiding official rest stops for fear of being imprisoned as illegal immigrants. Their first boat trip attempting to cross from South Australia to Victoria sank, killing over half its passengers.

The Pacific islands were seen as potential colonies on the route to a speculated southern continent.
