South Central Los Angeles has a history dating back to the 1880s when USC opened and Watts was established in 1912. It experienced major growth in the 1940s with jobs opening up at plants like Chrysler which attracted African American migrants. This led to a jazz and R&B music scene but also the emergence of gangs. The Watts Riots in 1965 and Rodney King Riots in 1992 were defining civil unrest events in the area's history marked by social and economic challenges.
