John White was an English artist and colonial leader who helped establish the Roanoke colony in the late 1500s. As the colony's governor, he left for England to get supplies but was unable to return for three years, finding the colony abandoned upon his return. Known as the "Lost Colony", John White played a key role in some of the earliest English colonial efforts in North America.
