South Africa has a population of around 53 million people and is the 25th largest country by land area. Indigenous Africans descended from Khoikhoi and Bantu peoples who entered the region around 2000 years ago. Europeans settlers, mainly Dutch and British, as well as slaves, Indians, and Chinese immigrants also make up the diverse ethnic groups in South Africa. The official currency is the South African Rand, which is also used in neighboring countries. Christianity is the largest religion, but traditional African religions, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism are also commonly practiced.
