Film sound is as important and as carefully controlled as the visual elements of a
text. Although sound is often recorded on set, most film sound is added in post-
production
Film sound will be mixed very carefully to ensure that important sounds are
emphasised and that the correct atmosphere for a sequence is maintained
Selective sound is: used to emphasise key elements within a sequence
Ambient sound is: the sound you expect to hear in different places
Other elements of sound design to look out for:
Sound bridges – to help transition between sequences pass for fluidly
Sound effects – added in to create as sense of realism
Sound can be either:
Diegetic – that is, it exists within the world of the film or
Non-diegetic – that is, it emerges from outside the world of the film, eg film
soundtracks

Sound that comes from the scene, actors or
noises sound picked up by camera
Added in externally voice over or background

2. Film sound can be either:
Synchronous – this is when sound is matched with another technical event
or action
Asynchronous – the musical sound track when music is added in after
Contrapuntal – visuals that don’t match the music
Other elements of sound design to look out for:
Voiceovers – someone speaking over something
Theme music – a bit of music that is linked to a specific person
Musical Score – used to create atmosphere, to link shots/sequance
Silence – being quite creates suspence
