Why Cloud Computing has to go the FOSS wayAhmed Mekkawy
This presentation tries to show the trends of software industry to reach the conclusion that cloud computing as a concept is inevitable, and having them as open clouds in inevitable as well.
Tutorial on using CoreOS Flannel for Docker networkingLorisPack Project
Flannel is an overlay based networking technique for networking Docker containers on CoreOS platforms. This tutorial explains the theory, setup instructions and limtations of the mechanism.
Anatomy of a Container: Namespaces, cgroups & Some Filesystem Magic - LinuxConJérôme Petazzoni
Containers are everywhere. But what exactly is a container? What are they made from? What's the difference between LXC, butts-nspawn, Docker, and the other container systems out there? And why should we bother about specific filesystems?
In this talk, Jérôme will show the individual roles and behaviors of the components making up a container: namespaces, control groups, and copy-on-write systems. Then, he will use them to assemble a container from scratch, and highlight the differences (and likelinesses) with existing container systems.
WebSocket Perspectives 2015 - Clouds, Streams, Microservices and WoTFrank Greco
WebSocket is not just a push mechanism. There are other HTTP-based mechanisms for simply sending a short notification to the browsers. It is much more. This presentation was given at both JavaOne 2015 and HTML5DevConf 2015 with slightly different Java/JavaScript information, but the basic information is the same.
Turtles All the Way Down: Platform Ops in Public Cloudbridgetkromhout
When I joined a startup already in progress as their first ops hire, I got a crash course in cloud operations. Running databases in EC2 without being on bare metal presents its own challenges; we also began using Hadoop and HBase on EMR, with tragicomic results. What monitoring existed was a twisty maze of half-measures, so improving our Mean Time To Lost Sleep required trying new tools and alerting strategies. And scaling performance meant relying on best practices and gut-feeling hunches.
This talk will have appeal for those curious about AWS, about using MapReduce in the cloud, and about whether MongoDB is really "web scale". (Spoiler alert: lolol.) Come for the EC2 trivia; stay for the table-flipping.

MQTT with Eclipse Paho: A protocol for IoT and M2M communicationChristian Götz
Our digital world is growing rapidly and we have more devices connected to the internet than ever. On top of that each second 80 new devices are added, which introduces new challenges to communication between these devices. MQTT is a lightweight and scalable protocol that shifts the request/response paradigm of the web as it is today to an event-driven publish and subscribe architecture, which is a perfect fit for Internet of Things and M2M use cases. This talk answers the following three questions: Why do we need a paradigm shift, HTTP has been proven to be a good fit for the web? What is MQTT and how does it help to overcome the challenges we have today? How can everybody build their own MQTT application with the Eclipse Paho implementation? In the last part we will dive into the Eclipse Paho code and round up the talk with an live demonstration.

Comparing Sidecar-less Service Mesh from Cilium and IstioChristian Posta
Service mesh is a powerful pattern for implementing strong zero-trust networking practices, introducing better network observability, and allowing for more fine-grained traffic control. Up until now, the sidecar pattern was used to implement service-mesh capability but as the technology matures, a new pattern has emerged: sidecarless service mesh. Two prominent open-source networking projects, Cilium and Istio, have implemented a sidecar-free approach to service mesh but they both make interesting design decisions and tradeoffs. In this talk we review the architecture of both, focusing on the pros and cons of implementations such as mutual authentication, ingress, and observability.

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms.
