Some hypotheses from ASR:
A hypothesis connects an operationalized concept(s) (variable(s)) with another variable or a few others. So, there are three things to pay attention to:
1) the variable(s) that the author wants to explain
2) the variable(s) that the author explains (1) with
3) connection between (1) and (2)
“a higher presence of women in professional associations will contribute to greater gender earnings equality”
“Some NHRIs will be more effective than others based on (1) the length of time each form has been in existence and characteristics such as (2) substantive mandate (whether the human rights focus is explicit) and (3) structural capacities (the power to investigate government wrongdoing).”
“NHRIs will have a stronger effect on physical integrity violations than on civil and political rights abuses.”
A few examples of SOCI380 student hypotheses:
H1a: applied science students will display lower levels of willingness to act against ACC compared to non-applied science students
H1b: science students will display higher levels of willingness to act against ACC compared to non-science students
H2: there is a positive relationship between a student's attitude towards climate change and their willingness to act against ACC
H3: there is a positive relationship between a student's knowledge about climate change and their willingness to act against ACC
H1: (a) there is a positive relationship between the number of hours someone spends on Facebook per day and the personality traits of extroversion, agreeableness and openness to experience.
(b) There is a negative relationship between the number of hours spent on Facebook per day and the personality traits of conscientiousness and neuroticism.
H2: There is a negative relationship between time spent on Facebook and self-esteem
Research Project Information
Part 1: Literature Review
Your literature review should be 4-5 pages (6-7 if working in pairs) in length (excluding title page and reference section), typed (12 point font), and double spaced. Paper topics must relate to studies in sociology and must be geared toward survey research. NOTE: papers submitted for another class cannot be submitted for this assignment – this is academic dishonesty. Use peer reviewed articles or chapters, do not use reviews of the literature. Be sure to narrow you topic so that your paper has depth. Students are asked to come to my office to discuss paper topics and prepare an outline for the paper to review with me before beginning. Projects MUST fall under minimal risk criteria (see ethics guidelines that will be distributed in class). You may work in pairs or individually. If you work with a partner you must submit a peer evaluation of your partner for each section of the project.
Introduction (10 points)
· Introduce the topic
· State the argument or purpose of the review in a clear thesis (Why is this topic relevant?)
· State topic limits you have set (how have your narrowed your topic?)

The Research Report
The Research Reportserves as the deliverable towards partial completion of the requirement for the course. The requirement of your research is expected to be built and constitutes the five-chapter model. This document is not intended to be a one-time or static document. The Research Reportneeds to be at least 14 pages and is written in the past and present tense, as appropriate.
The Research Report should be a complete and concise document that establishes your credentials as a relative expert in the domain of your study. In all cases, a good understanding of the specific domain will be necessary for the successful completion of your study. It is vital that you stay current in the literature germane to the study you are conducting and update the chapters accordingly.
The following is the general structure of the Research ReportChapter 1- Background/Introduction (3– 4 pages)
In this section, present enough information about the proposed work so that the reader understands the general context or setting. It is also helpful to include a summary of how this document is organized. Introduction
This section introduces the reader to the structural content of your Research ReportProblem Statement and Purpose of Research
In this section, present a concise statement of a research-worthy problem to be addressed (i.e., why the work should be undertaken – don’t state “it was a requirement of the professor”). Follow the statement of the problem with a well-supported discussion of its scope and nature. The discussion of the problem should include: what the problem is, why it is a problem, how the problem evolved or developed, and the issues and events leading to the problem. Your problem statement must be clear, concise, to the point and able to be articulated in no more than three sentences.Relevance and Significance
This section provides the necessary support for both the problem statement of your study. Consider the following questions and support your discussion by citing the research literature:
· Why is there a problem? What groups ...
Final Research Essay (25) Due date December 9th FoChereCheek752
Final Research Essay (25%)
Due date: December 9th | Folder: Final Essay on SLATE
This essay is the final stage of a research and writing process that incorporates your work on the
Annotated Bibliography and the Oral Presentation. You must use the same topic that you have chosen for
your annotated bibliography and presentation. You must discuss your topic and analyze your evidence in
this research paper – it should not just be a presentation of information that you have gathered from your
sources. You may choose one of the two following styles for your essay:
Style 1: Complexity Essay
The goal of a complexity essay is to explain what makes your chosen topic a complex one. Rather than
defending one particular side, you will aim to explain why the topic as a whole is a difficult one.
Typically, complexity essays will be a sophisticated and evidence-based response to the following
question: what makes [topic X] a complex one? For example: what makes the legalisation of marijuana a
complex topic?
You will develop a handful of arguments that support the overall idea of complexity for your topic. Each
individual argument will then be supported with evidence from the sources you have gathered.
For example: the legalisation of marijuana in Canada is a complex topic because of arguments A, B, C, D,
and E. These arguments are supported with evidence.
Style 2: Argumentative Essay
The goal of an argumentative essay is to explain why one particular position is better than another. Rather
than simply (1) comparing or contrasting or (2) listing information you have found, you must demonstrate
an awareness of the two or more perspectives on your chosen topic and support one perspective with
evidence. If you provide only points you agree with and support them with evidence, you are producing
an overwhelmingly biased essay. Therefore, you must also provide an argument or two that you disagree
with and use your evidence to refute that/those argument(s).
For example: the government of Canada should legalise marijuana because of arguments A, B, C, and D.
These arguments are supported with evidence. Argument E goes against my position, but I will refute it
with evidence I have gathered.
Construct a paper that contains the following elements:
1. APA style cover page
2. Title
3. Introduction (one paragraph or two, at the maximum)
4. Main discussion section
a. 5-10 body paragraphs of discussion and analysis, which include:
i. well-defined argument, normally one per body paragraph
ii. evidence (facts, statistics, examples, professional/scientific opinion) that supports
or refutes the arguments
iii. visuals, if needed (graphs, charts, tables)
5. Conclusion (one paragraph or two, at the maximum)
6. APA style reference page that includes:
a. a minimum of 5 research sources:
i. at least 2 must be academic
ii. others may be academic or non-academic

RESEARCH PROPOSAL - PART 1: INTRODUCTION, REVIEW OF LITERATURE, PROBLEM STATEMENT,
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Due at the end of week 7 (Sunday February 28, 2021 at midnight)
You need to conduct some research related to your own interests or to serve the interests of some organization
(employer/client/sponsor). Before you start writing a formal proposal, you (or your employer/client/sponsor) would like to
gather some information about the problem as well as understand its importance.
Choose your research topic thoughtfully and submit the topic of your research proposal for approval the latest by the end of
Week 3 (Sunday January 31, 2021 at midnight). You can find the submission box in Week 3.
This part of your research proposal should be roughly 7-9 pages (excluding cover page, references and annex) and written
in paragraphs, report format. All citations and references for this course are to be done in the APA style.
HERE ARE THE KEY PARTS OF THIS PART OF THE PROPOSAL (PART 1):
Title of your research
Make it intriguing – (BUT LESS THAN 120 CHARACTERS)
Introduction/Background
Provide a brief description of what the proposed research topic is about, why is it important and how you came to be
interested in it.
Literature Review
The purpose of this assignment is to develop skills in finding and analyzing valid literary resources for your research.
The review should be written in an integral / synthetic style, and NOT as an annotated bibliography.
Please note: Use in-text citations to reference all ideas, concepts, text, and data that are not your own. If you make a
statement, back it up with a reference!
• Research a minimum of 15 relevant business-related literature sources (focus on material available in digital
format only for this course). Carefully choose your 15 "keepers" that are clearly related to your study. (Note: you
might need to find 30 to “keep” only 15).
• Identify major common themes encountered in the selected literature sources. For each theme, create its own
subsection within the literature review.
• For each theme / subsection of the literature review, explain the opinions of the authors and show their
similarities, differences, methods of acquisition of data, methods of data analysis and other pertinent information.
State how the reviewed research results relate to your proposed study.
• Identify the gaps in the literature and explain what needs to be done to move forward in your research.
Statement of the Problem
Detail the problem that you are considering. Explain:
• How are you defining and delimiting the specific area of the research?
• What is the gap that will be addressed by this research?
• What it is that you hope to learn by conducting this research?

Use the corporation you selected for the Week 4 discussion or another corporation when responding to the two following questions. In your response identify the selected corporation. Please note that substantive responses add new topic related information to help move the discussion forward and do not summarize what was previously posted by another student.
Teachers question below
As a manager, how will you use the horizontal analysis of the income statement and balance sheet for intracompany comparisons? How do managers and investors use the vertical analysis of the income statement and balance sheet compared to competitor corporations when performing intercompany comparisons? Identify at least one competitor corporation and include an explanation as to why or how you selected the competitor.

Critical Thinking and Managerial Decision Making
Written Assessment- Reflective Essay
Task: The essay must be 2000 words (+/-10%) in length.
Cover page: The essay must include a cover page that contains your name, student number,
resident campus, assessment title, and lecturer.
Format: Text should be word-processed, with appropriate layout and use of headings/sub
headings. Times New Roman, 12 size font and line spacing (1.5).
Referencing: A minimum of 10 academic references are required. The list of references
should form the last page or two, at the end of the assessment. Referencing should be in a
consistent APA style.
Task Description: The objectives of this reflective essay are for students to (1) summarize,
critically review and reinforce key concepts and theories learned from week 1 to week 9 of this
unit. (2) reflect on these concepts/theories’ potential impact on students’ decision making, and
how these learnings are being applied and could be applied in their current jobs, development
of future career and/or their life generally. (3) reflect on new insights gained about oneself as a
result of learning the unit and propose a plan for self-development.
Minimum number of concepts/theories/themes required to pass: 6
Students ought to start the reflective essay in week 4 after the submission of their first
assignment. From week 4 to week 9 (a total of 6 weeks), students are expected to reflect on
the topics (week 1-week 9) this unit has covered and evaluate which concepts or theories
have inspired their thinking or influenced their decision making. This assignment still
requires an essay format with introduction section outlining the scope, purpose and
structure information. The body paragraphs need to contain at least six themes over the
course of six weeks, and each theme needs to contain a CONVINCING and PERSONAL
justification of why these concepts/theories are chosen and how the mentioned
concepts/theories have changed/might change the students’ thinking or the students’
decisions. For example, students could identify the concepts of “automatic versus critical
thinking” as a theme for one week’s reflection, and illustrate with personal examples how
having learned about the differences has enabled him/her to be more effective in making a
certain decision at work. Close to the end, the essay needs to reflect on self-knowledge and
highlight implications for future self-development.
To successfully complete this assessment task, students should answer the following reflective essay
questions:
Which concepts/theories from which week’s learning activities are significant or important to
you?
Why are these concepts/theories you have identified important or significant to you?
(Theoretical review)
How are the concepts/theories you have learned influencing/impacting your deci.

In Part 3 of the Course Project, you consider how the evidence you gathered during Part 2 can be translated into nursing practice.
Now that you have located available research on your PICOT question, you will examine what the research indicates about nursing practices. Connecting research evidence and findings to actual decisions and tasks that nurses complete in their daily practice is essentially what evidence-based practice is all about. This final component of the Course Project asks you to translate the evidence and data from your literature review into authentic practices that can be adopted to improve health care outcomes. In addition, you will also consider possible methods and strategies for disseminating evidence-based practices to your colleagues and to the broader health care field.
To prepare:
Consider Parts 1 and 2 of your Course Project. How does the research address your PICOT question?
With your PICOT question in mind, identify at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in two or more of the articles from your literature review. Consider what the evidence indicates about how this practice contributes to better outcomes.
Explore possible consequences of failing to adopt the evidence-based practice that you identified.
Consider how you would disseminate information about this evidence-based practice throughout your organization or practice setting. How would you communicate the importance of the practice?
To complete:
In a 3- to 4-page paper:
Restate your PICOT question and its significance to nursing practice.
Summarize the findings from the articles you selected for your literature review. Describe at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in the articles. Justify your response with specific references to at least 2 of the articles.
Explain how the evidence-based practice that you identified contributes to better outcomes. In addition, identify potential negative outcomes that could result from failing to use the evidence-based practice.
Outline the strategy for disseminating the evidence-based practice that you identified throughout your practice setting. Explain how you would communicate the importance of the practice to your colleagues. Describe how you would move from disseminating the information to implementing the evidence-based practice within your organization. How would you address concerns and opposition to the change in practice? It should be combined with the other two components of the Course Project and turned in as your Portfolio Assignment for this course.

Guidelines To Write Research Proposal
Research Proposal Guidelines
The ProposalProcess
Your proposal is due on week 15. The maximum word limit of the proposal is 4,000 +_ 5% excluding the title (cover) page, references and appendices. Avoid repetition and be concise.
The exact format of each student’s proposal is likely to vary in content, style and presentation. The example below provides a possible structural framework for your proposal and should be used as a guide only. It is important to bear in mind that different approaches may necessitate differences in structure. Overall, ensure that deviations from a ‘traditional’ structure are clearly explained and justified. Title (Cover page)
This is a mandatory inclusion and should contain the following information.
Title of project
Author Name
Proposal Submitted for the Master of Science in Nursing
College of Nursing. Hail University
Month and Year of Submission
The title (cover) page and page numbers should be exactly per APA style
Proposal should be written in future tense, except for the literature review section.
Introduction
Introduce your topic of interest for the reader. Provide information on the context and rationale for the topic you chose to study and why it is important. Describe the broad foundations of your proposal, including some references to existing literature and/or empirically observable situations. In other words, the introduction needs to provide sufficient background for readers to understand where your proposal for research, a process improvement or policy initiative is coming from. Background
This section provides a description of the topic being studied (global to within the Saudi Arabian context). It provides a justification of its importance and relevance in terms of existing trends, reports, theory, research and practice.
Tips on drafting your background
· Indicate the general scope of your proposal project, but do not go into so much detail that later sections (purpose/literature review etc.) become irrelevant
· Clarify what the problem is or knowledge gap is that your project is responding to.
Review of Literature
Overall, this section should demonstrate wide reading in the immediate area and related theoretical areas and a discussion of underlying theories and supporting evidence. It is recommended that you include information on your search strategy (e.g. keywords, databases and inclusion and exclusion criteria and final results of your search). Provide a range of years used in the search and a rationale. Essentially, this section should be a comprehensive summary and a critical review of existing literature, which identifies strengths, weaknesses and omissions within the reviewed literature, and there should be accurate and complete referencing.

Explore other topics of interest to you and then discuss the topic with your instructor. Avoid topics that have already been legislated or discussed in depth (e.g., legalization of marijuana, the death penalty, bullying, religion, abortion, same-sex marriage, etc.). The topic you choose will be your research focus for the entire class, so choose a topic you are eager to explore.
As you move through the research process, you will have the opportunity to examine the issue critically, take a position, and develop a reasoned argument in support of your position. Your Portfolio Project will take the form of a well-researched paper using reliable sources and APA formatting for citations. In the paper, you will need to interpret and intelligently discuss the issue and support your findings with evidence. There will be portions of your research process required for submission throughout the class as listed below.

· Presents final thoughts on the topic; persuades audience this information is important to know
· Paper meets minimum 4-page requirement
31 - 24 points
· Introduction adequately explains the topic but lacks details to create audience interest or lacks a strong, clear position
· The central purpose of the work is identified. Ideas are generally focused in a way that supports the thesis.
· Begins to offer reasons to support its points, perhaps using varied kinds of evidence. Assumes evidence speaks for itself and needs little to no application to the point being discussed.
· Conclusion is recognizable but may lack audience relevance.
· Paper is 2-3 pages in length.

WRITING 4.0: Documented Inquiry Project: Novel Analysis
English 1302
Spring 2015
Synopsis of the Task.
As noted on the assignment sheet for Writing #3.0, your fourth project of the term is your
documented study: a paper that centers on a question worthy of academic research. This
particular paper will focus on analysis of a novel that you selected. The paper will be six to
eight pages (double spaced) long, not counting the abstract, annotated bibliography, (see
“Ancillaries” below) or your works cited page.
There is no one way you are required to analyze your novel, but the research paper must contain
some kind of analysis, and that analysis should be the focal point of paper. This analysis could
critical, evaluative, comparative, or some combination thereof. As long as it is analysis based on
evidence both from the text itself and outside academic sources, it will work for the paper. You
may wish to use one or more of the modes of literary criticism that we have discussed in class.
Keep in mind, plot synopsis may be part of the paper, but it can take up no more than a
paragraph in the paper if you use a dedicated plot synopsis section. Any paper that is mostly plot
synopsis, or simply a report of information gathered about the novel, can receive a grade no
higher than a 70.
Ancillaries.
Besides the text itself, you will create an annotated bibliography based on the tentative list
of works to be used you wrote for Writing 3.0, and you will also create an abstract, which
should be about one paragraph in length. The rough drafts of the annotated bibliography and
the abstract will be revised into a final draft for this paper. The annotated bibliography
and abstract are required parts of this assignment.
Other things will also be due along the way the rest of the semester: notes for me to check,
revisions, and an oral presentation of your final paper to the class. Each of these is part of the
entire assignment; without them, your final grade for Writing 4.0 will suffer.
Format.
The paper should be typed or word-processed, double spaced, and can include headings. For any
other questions about using tables or surveys, please consult the writing center, any of the MLA
help websites we have discussed, our textbooks, or myself. Page numbers are required for
this paper, and should be placed in the upper right hand corner of each page.
Documentation and Sources.
Once again, MLA will be the citation system that you use for this assignment. As far as numbers
of sources to consider for a paper of this length, 6-8 reputable, academic sources would be
appropriate. Direct use of Wikipedia as a source will not be permitted. Sites such as
About.com, Sparknotes, Shmoop, and other “homework/study” sites will not be permitted.
General dictionaries and encyclopedias will also not be permitted.

The 10 Strategic Points for the Prospectus, Proposal, and Dissertation
Introduction
In the Prospectus, Proposal and Dissertation there are ten key or strategic points that need to be clear, simple, correct, and aligned to ensure the research is doable, valuable, and credible. These points, which provide a guide or vision for the research, are present in almost any research. They are defined within this 10 Strategic Points document.
The 10 Strategic Points
The 10 strategy points emerge from researching literature on a topic, which is based on, or aligned with, the defined need in the literature as well as the learner’s personal passion, future career purpose, and degree area. The 10 Strategic Points document includes the following ten key or strategic points that define the research focus and approach:
1. Topic – Provides a broad research topic area/title.
2. Literature review - Lists primary points for four sections in the Literature Review: (a) Background of the problem/gap and the need for the study based on citations from the literature; (b) Theoretical foundations (models and theories to be foundation for study); (c) Review of literature topics with key theme for each one; (d) Summary.
3. Problem statement - Describes the problem to address through the study based on defined needs or gaps from the literature.
4. Sample and location – Identifies sample, needed sample size, and location (study phenomena with small numbers and variables/groups with large numbers).
5. Research questions – Provides research questions to collect data to address the problem statement.
6. Hypothesis/variables or Phenomena - Provides hypotheses with variables for each research question (quantitative) or describes the phenomena to be better understood (qualitative).
7. Methodology and design - Describes the selected methodology and specific research design to address problem statement and research questions.
8. Purpose statement – Provides one sentence statement of purpose including the problem statement, methodology, design, population sample, and location.
9. Data collection – Describes primary instruments and sources of data to answer research questions.
10. Data analysis – Describes the specific data analysis approaches to be used to address research questions.
The Process for Defining the Ten Strategic Points
The order of the ten strategic points listed above reflects the order in which the learner does the work. The fir ...

Formal Research Report or Q/AResearch Report / Individual Project (400 points)
Write a scholarly research report on a topic related to Software Engineering (see Appropriate Topics). Please see Important Notes and Document Details for detailed specifications.
Appropriate Topics:
The Research Report should consist of a comparative analysis of two programming languages of your choice.
Important Student Notes:
· Each student submission should be checked for plagiarism. Students should be warned that Turnitin has a very good historical memory and is capable of accessing reports from both internal and external resources (i.e. Universities, Governments, etc.) including those originally written in non-English written languages. Plagiarism will result in a grade of zero (non-negotiable) for the assignment and may results in other university actions.
· Only one submission attempt is permitted – AS THE STUDENT TO BE SURE BEFORE DEPRESSING ENTER.
· Acceptable file formats for submissions include Microsoft Word (doc, docx) or Adobe Acrobat (PDF). No other formats are acceptable.
· The research paper must be at least 2,500 words supported by evidence (citations from peer-reviewed sources).
· A minimum of four (4) peer-reviewed journal citations are required.
· Formatting should be double-spaced, one-inch boarders, no extra space for headings, no extra white space, no more than two levels of heading, page numbers, front and back matter).
· Extra white space use to enhance page count will negatively affect student grade.
· Chapter 1 illustrates the document details of the research report and constitutes Background/Introduction, Problem Statement(s), Goal(s), Research Question(s), Relevance and Significance, Barriers and Issues related to topic chosen. Chapter 2 should consist of student paraphrasing the cited research material (i.e. what happened in case study x). Chapter 3 should be the reasoning for doing a basic compare/contrast or advantages/disadvantage of what was stated in Chapter 2 (do not state because the professor said so). Chapter 4 is a complete analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of what was stated in chapter 2. In effect, chapter 3 is a statement of what will be done and chapter 4 is what was done and what the findings were. Again, thus far the writing is objective and must not contain student opinion. Chapter 5 states results, conclusion, and future work recommendations. Here is where student opinion (or any researcher) can state their respective opinion as the student has now “done the work” and are justified in stating results.
· Graduate student are expected to be proficient in the use of the English language. Errors in grammar, spelling, or syntax will affect student grade. The Professor, will not provide remedial help for writing problems. If the student is unable to write clearly and correctly, the student should be urged to contact the program office for sources of remedial help.

Some experts assert that who we are is a result of nurture—the rel.docxrronald3
Some experts assert that who we are is a result of nurture—the relationships and caring that surround us. Others argue that who we are is based entirely in genetics. According to this belief, our temperaments, interests, and talents are set before birth. From this perspective, then, who we are depends on nature. One way researchers attempt to measure the impact of nature is by studying twins. Some studies have followed identical twins who were raised separately. The pairs shared the same genetics but in some cases were socialized in different ways. Instances of this type of situation are rare, but studying the degree to which identical twins raised apart are the same and different can give researchers insight into the way our temperaments, preferences, and abilities are shaped by our genetic makeup versus our social environment. For example, in 1968, twin girls born to a mentally ill mother were put up for adoption, separated from each other, and raised in different households. The adoptive parents, and certainly the babies, did not realize the girls were one of five pairs of twins who were made subjects of a scientific study (Flam 2007).In 2003, the two women, then age thirty-five, were reunited. Elyse Schein and Paula Bernstein sat together in awe, feeling like they were looking into a mirror. Not only did they look alike but they also behaved alike, using the same hand gestures and facial expressions (Spratling 2007). Studies like these point to the genetic roots of our temperament and behavior.Though genetics and hormones play an important role in human behavior, sociology’s larger concern is the effect society has on human behavior, the “nurture” side of the nature versus nurture debate. What race were the twins? From what social class were their parents? What about gender? Religion? All these factors affected the lives of the twins as much as their genetic makeup and are critical to consider as we look at life through the sociological lens. The Life of Chris Langan, the Smartest Man You’ve Never Heard OfBouncer. Firefighter. Factory worker. Cowboy. Chris Langan spent the majority of his adult life just getting by with jobs like these. He had no college degree, few resources, and a past filled with much disappointment. Chris Langan also had an IQ of over 195, nearly 100 points higher than the average person (Brabham 2001). So why didn’t Chris become a neurosurgeon, professor, or aeronautical engineer? According to Macolm Gladwell (2008) in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, Chris didn’t possess the set of social skills necessary to succeed on such a high level—skills that aren’t innate but learned.Gladwell looked to a recent study conducted by sociologist Annette Lareau in which she closely shadowed 12 families from various economic backgrounds and examined their parenting techniques. Parents from lower income families followed a strategy of “accomplishment of natural growth,” which is to say they let their children develop on their o.

Some examples of writing
This is detailed practical guidance with examples. Take time to look at it before you write your first assignment. Do not worry if the technical risk management material in the examples is too difficult to understand. Just look at how the technical material is introduced and linked.Structure
The instructions for some assignments give you a particular structure to use. Dissertations are a bit like this although you have choices and some flexibility.
But for most assignments you have freedom over the structure. We usually recommend you start with an introduction and end with a conclusion, but what goes in between is up to you and should match the process of analysis and argument that you use in your piece.
It is usually a good idea to use sub-headings to help show your structure clearly and keep you focused.
For MANG6182 both the ‘essay’ and the ‘report’ can follow this simple structure. There is nothing special about the ‘report’.Introductions
Alasdair and I would like your introductions to be succinct and explain the analytical approach taken in the essay/report as a whole. The following example of an introduction is NOT based on this year’s assignments but still shows the difference between a poor introduction and a good one. Here’s the poor version.
“Risk is a key concept in management today, with more and more organizations adopting risk management methods and following risk management regulations. Risk has become a fundamental concern (Power, 2004) of government and wider society. Risk, and the communication of risk, have also become a major concern for clinicians, who are increasingly expected to explain risks to patients as part of obtaining their consent to medical treatments such as surgery. In this context, it is important to understand the effect that talking about risk has on the way people think and, in particular, on the way they make decisions and the quality of those decisions. Motivated by this, Dowie wrote “Against risk” to argue that the use of the word “risk” was unhelpful in this medical context and more broadly. The article discusses the issues in principle through an imaginary conversation involving Humpty Dumpty, but reaches more practical and succinct conclusions and proposals later. One of those proposals is the replacement of various risk phrases with risk free alternatives.
This article will discuss the risk and risk free phrases proposed by Dowie before critically analysing them. The article ends with a conclusion.”
What is wrong with this introduction? Why is this below average despite good English and a citation? The first paragraph is too long and begins with very general waffle. The second paragraph is far too generic and gives us no idea of the strategy used to analyse the issue. We are simply promised some “critical analysis.” The one positive point is that this second paragraph at least makes clear that it is the risk phrases that are the topic of the report, not the whole article.

The Research Report
The Research Report serves as the deliverable towards partial completion of the requirement for BA634. The requirement of your research is expected to be built and constitutes the five-chapter model. This document is not intended to be a one-time or static document. The Research Report needs to be at least 14 pages and is written in the past and present tense, as appropriate.
The following is the general structure of the Research ReportChapter 1- Background/Introduction (3 – 4 pages)
In this section, present enough information about the proposed work so that the reader understands the general context or setting. It is also helpful to include a summary of how this document is organized. Introduction
This section introduces the reader to the structural content of your Research Report Problem Statement and Purpose of Research
· Why is.

Writing Style: APA
Type of document: Coursework
Academic Level:Master
Category: Nursing

Directions
The first step in this research process is to choose a topic. Do not feel confined to traditional topics or topics on which you already have a strong opinion. As you delve into the research, you may find your focus and understanding of the issue alters.
Some ideas to explore:
5
·
· Hacktivism
· Facial recognition technology
· Violent protest
· Sugar tax
· Supervised injection facilities
· Mental health and police wellness checks
· Abolishing the penny
· Universal basic income
· Media bias
· Racism in America
· The Electoral College
· Drones
· Social Media
Requirements and Formatting
Your Portfolio Project must be formatted as follows:
· APA formatting
· Title Page
· Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font
· 1-inch margins

We are simply promised some “critical analysis.” The one positive point is that this second paragraph at least makes clear that it is the risk phrases that are the topic of the report, not the whole article.

analyze the interaction between this persona and the chosen subject of the narrative. You can
elaborate on this topic by discussing aesthetic qualities (style), tone or larger generic structures,
or thematic structures. Or, you can link this topic up with any of the other topics that follow in
this list.
2. Discuss the relation of the author's view of things to that of one or more characters and
situate this relation within the total imaginative structure of the work or works. Consider the
author's total persona and how the author locates the character within the author's own range of
judgment.
3. Compare two or more characters not just in relation to their personal qualities but in respect
to their function within the total imaginative structure of the work(s). There needs to be some
significant interpretive rationale for your selection. You might choose characters who have some
similarity or contrast in personal characteristics and/or situation; or you might choose characters
who seem representative of larger categories such as sexual identity, family function, social
identity, cultural significance, or metaphysical perspective.
4. Discuss the significance of setting and situate this element within the total imaginative
structure of the work or works. How does the setting help to define or influence the author's
conception of possible values in the story? What limits do settings place on human possibilities?
What opportunities do they open up? How do they enter into normative concepts of moral value
or cultural order?
5. Discuss the narrative structure--the sequential structure of narrated events--and situate this
element within the total imaginative structure of the works. Are there distinct structural
divisions--for instance, divisions of chronological order or pacing, point of view, represented
subjects, or point of view--in the sequence? What is the larger thematic or imaginative
significance of these divisions?
6. Discuss tone in relation to the total imaginative structures of the works; that is, is the tone
comic, satiric, ironic, tragic, depressed, heroic, or what? Tone emerges as an interaction between
the emotional character of experience in the characters being represented and the emotional
response of the author to the characters. What is the nature of this interaction? To what extent
does the emotional quality of the characters' experience set the tone? Is there any tension
between the author and the characters (as in irony and satire)? What does tone--this emotional
quality or moo.
Some Better Practices for Measuring Racial and Ethnic Identity.docxrronald3
Some Better Practices for Measuring Racial and Ethnic Identity Constructs
Janet E. Helms
Boston College
Racial and ethnic identity (REI) measures are in danger of becoming conceptually meaningless because
of evaluators’ insistence that they conform to measurement models intended to assess unidimensional
constructs, rather than the multidimensional constructs necessary to capture the complexity of internal-
ized racial or cultural socialization. Some aspects of the intersection of REI theoretical constructs with
research design and psychometric practices are discussed, and recommendations for more informed use
of each are provided. A table that summarizes some psychometric techniques for analyzing multidimen-
sional measures is provided.
Keywords: racial identity, ethnic identity, reliability, validity, factor analysis
In counseling psychology, the measurement of racial identity
constructs is a relatively new phenomenon. Arguably, the practice
began when Jackson and Kirschner (1973) attempted to introduce
complexity into the measurement of Black students’ racial identity
by using a single categorical item with multiple options (e.g.,
“Black,” “Negro”) that the students could use to describe them-
selves. Helms and Parham (used in Parham & Helms, 1981) and
Helms and Carter (1990) built on the idea that assessment of
individual differences in racial identity is important, and they
added complexity to the measurement process by (a) developing
measures that were based on racial identity theoretical frame-
works, (b) using multiple items to assess the constructs inherent to
the theories, and (c) asking participants to use continua (i.e.,
5-point Likert scales) rather than categories to self-describe. These
principles underlie the Black Racial Identity Attitudes Scale
(BRIAS; formerly RIAS–B) and White Racial Identity Attitudes
Scale (WRIAS).
In response to perceived conceptual, methodological, or content
concerns with Helms and associates’ racial identity measures,
many rebuttal measures followed. Rebuttal measures are scales
that the new scale originator(s) specifically described as correc-
tions for one or more such deficiencies in preexisting identity
measures (e.g., Phinney, 1992, p. 157). Subsequent measures have
tended to rely on the previously listed basic measurement princi-
ples introduced by Parham and Helms (1981), although the theo-
retical rationales for the measures have varied. Phinney’s Multi-
group Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), the most frequently used
of the rebuttal measures to date, added the principle of measuring
“ethnic” rather than “racial identity,” which she seemingly viewed
as interchangeable constructs. The MEIM also introduced the
principle of measuring the same identity constructs across racial or
ethnic groups rather than group-specific constructs within them.
The BRIAS and WRIAS may be thought of as representative of
a class of identity measures in which opposing stages, statuses, or
schemas are assessed, wh.

Some 19th century commentators argued that the poor are not well-adapted to survive, that perhaps their poverty is a result of their poor adaption. Does the theory of natural selection support this interpretation? Or is a society's tendency to support its poorer members an evolutionary advantage, increasing that society's ability to survive?

Introduction
A a local nonprofit charity has noticed a severe drop in new memberships as well as a decline in repeat membership. Because memberships are the primary source of the foundation’s funding, the decrease in both areas threatens the organization's ability to survive and grow. Therefore, management has decided to implement the five-step marketing approach to increase their understanding of the problem and find possible solutions. To be successful, the research must determine the problem, set research objectives, decide what data is needed, and then choose a method for obtaining the information. After compiling and analyzing the results, the marketing manager can then suggest changes that may optimize the chances of the charity’s future survival and growth.

Make recommendations based on the results
Utilize the Five-Step Marketing Research approach
FIVE-STEP MARKETING RESEARCH
The above graphic depicts the five-step marketing approach as a series of steps. As new information or data becomes available, the researcher may go back to previous steps and repeat them. This circular process allows firms to refine the scope and quality of the potential solutions. Additionally, the five-step process may employ multiple data collection methods that include surveys, focus groups, one on one interviews, interception interviews, observation, or a combination of any of these methods or other techniques (Kerin & Hartley, 2017).

The Importance Of Marketing Research
Market research definition
Keeps business focused
Reduces risks
Enables managers to be future oriented & relevant
Permits business growth opportunities
Knowledge is power. And in the modern global market, marketing research is not just helpful; it is essential to be successful. (Fletcher, 2013). Marketing research provides knowledge to industries by alerting them to their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats by providing detailed information about their market, their product, their audience, the competition, and possible opportunities and threats (Kerin & Hartley, 2017). According to Kerin & Hartley (2017), "Marketing Research is the process of defining a marketing problem and opportunity, systematically collecting and analyzing information, and recommending actions" (p. 206). These processes can improve a firms decision-making capabilities and reduce their level of risk. Such an analysis is important because it keeps the business focused on activities that fulfill their customer value proposition, fostering an increased level of relationship marketing. When companies are acutely attuned to the needs and demands of their clients, they can respond to changes in trends and customer preferences in a timelier fashion. Such det.

Soma Bay Prospers with ERP in the CloudSoma Bay is a 10-millio.docxrronald3
Soma Bay Prospers with ERP in the Cloud
Soma Bay is a 10-million-square-mile resort community on the Egyptian shore of the Red Sea. It has many attractions that make it a first-class vacation paradise, including five hotels, a championship golf course, water sport facilities, a world-class spa, and luxury vacation homes. Soma Bay Development Company is headquartered in Hurghada, Egypt and has more than 2,000 employees.
Unfortunately, political upheavals and economic conditions have taken a toll on occupancy rates and profitability. When President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown during the Egyptian revolution of 2011, there was a sharp devaluation of Egyptian currency. In the years that followed, political conditions stabilized and the Egyptian economy recovered, but the tourism industry lost U.S. $1.3 billion after the downing of a commercial airliner over the Sinai Desert in late 2015. Soma Bay Development Company’s hotel occupancy rates plummeted from more than 50 percent in 2015 to 25 percent in the first quarter of 2016.
Foreign exchange fluctuations and political upheavals are forces beyond Soma Bay’s control, but what the company’s management can do during downturns is react intelligently by closely monitoring operations and costs. This is possible thanks to the company’s use of a JD Edwards Enterprise One ERP system from Oracle with applications and data residing in Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (Oracle Cloud IaaS).
In the past, Soma Bay Development Company had tried to run much of the company using unwieldy Excel-based systems. Managers had to manually manipulate spreadsheets to understand the basic drivers of profitability, and it often took too long to obtain the information needed for sound decision making. These systems made it difficult for Soma Bay to manage its aggressive growth plans, which included construction of 1000 new homes over a five-year period.
Mohammed Serry, Soma Bay Company’s CFO, and his team selected JD Edwards Enterprise One for a solution because it could create standardized business processes across functional areas and provide timely reports that explain the profitability of each business unit using a standard chart of accounts. The software can identify the profitability drivers and growth drivers of a business. Enterprise One seamlessly combines data from the general ledger and other financial systems with data from operational systems.
Soma Bay’s Enterprise One cloud platform makes it easy to create cash flow reports, project management reports, accounts receivable aging reports, facility management reports, and key performance indicator reports throughout Soma Bay’s distributed organization. Company management also appreciates Oracle Cloud IaaS disaster recovery capabilities. Several years ago, water from an upper floor flooded Soma Bay’s Cairo data center. The company was able to restore data and resume operations quickly because it had backups stored in Oracle Cloud.

Somatic symptom disorder has a long history. Sigmund Freud described.docxrronald3
Somatic symptom disorder has a long history. Sigmund Freud described a case of Anna, who displayed several physical conditions (e.g., pain, dizziness, numbness, and visual disturbances) with no apparent medical cause. Also, schizophrenia is not actually one single disorder but a spectrum of disorders that fall along a continuum of symptoms and functioning levels.
Describe somatic symptom disorder, and if the disorder can be diagnosed if the person has an actual physical illness.
Describe the basic criteria for schizophrenia based on the current DSM criteria. Explain the differences between negative and positive symptoms.
Explain the prognosis of an individual diagnosed with schizophrenia based on age and gender factors.

Re:Unit5 - Discussion Board
Hello Classmates,
Through all my internet surfing, I never really thought about what makes a Web Page or what defines a web page.
I just sit down, do my search, and leave it at this.
It wasn’t until just now, taking this class and through this DB assignment that I stopped to think – Just what is a Web Page?
Well, after many aimless episodes of surfing, I have now been informed – A Web Page is a page that can accessed through the internet, via the web.
It is a page that may contain 2 –dimensional or 3-dimensional graphics, audio bytes, video clips, an email address for replies, or other various outlets for user feedback.
The underlying language for web pages are written in HTML, which allows for formatting and other ActiveX controls (Web Page, 1999).
Ok, I now have it. ~lol~
I have written many of documents which contained portions of Word and Excel, but I never knew that there was a definition or label for them, but they are considered “Compound Documents”.
I just always took for granted that Microsoft had given its users the ability to produce such documents without much thought.
But, there is much to be learned from this everyday use of complimenting applications.
The ability to combine applications from other programs, such as, inserting an audio or other media clip from one application with another, such as, a word processing application requires activating or loading its associated user interface.
The technology (DDE, OLE) that allows the user to manipulate complimenting applications, and serve them up in a single context is called COM, structured storage, and uniform data transfer (Compound Documents, n.d., para. 1).
Now, producing compound documents can be done by either linking or embedding.
The difference between the 2 methods is in how and where the objects source data is stored.
The residence of this data determines the portability and how the updates perform, and the size and structure of its containers (Microsoft, n.d. para. 1).
Linked objects inside a compound document still reside in its origin, and this is just a reference (Linked Objects, n.d. para.1).
Whereas, embedded objects are stored in the document, along with information used to manage it (Embedded Objects, n.d. para.1).
My conclusion from the above information, is this, - Web Pages and Compound Documents, such as External Excel spreadsheets linked to a Word document share many of the same characteristics, in that, they combine data from outside sources, but in a compound document, there is 2-way communication, the user not only can view the information, but also manipulate it, unlike a web page.

How do emotions affect critical thinking?
“Each human emotion mobilizes the mind and body to meet one of the challenges of living and reproducing in the cognitive niche. Some challenges are posed by physical thins, and the emotions that deal with them, like disgust, fear, and appreciation of natural beauty work in straightforward ways. Others are posed by people. The problem in dealing with people is that people can deal back. The emotions that evolved in response to other people’s emotions, like anger, gratitude, shame, and romantic love, are played on a complicated chessboard, and they spawn the passion and intrigue that misleads the Romantic” (Pink 1977).
Emotions play a big role in critical thinking; emotions have a tendency to guide us in everything we do. From crossing the street, to going a particular way to work or school, you know that if you cross without looking the possibility would be to get hit by a car, or going to work or school you travel the same route every day, but lately you go a different route because you know that the road is under construction.
When you thinking of these things before you leave, you are, planning a new way to work and leaving earlier to be there on time. And when crossing the street you look both ways before you cross, this is learned at a very early age, so it becomes a natural instinct to do any time you are crossing a street.
But there are times perhaps, you are not thinking, because you are talking on your phone or with a friend and forgetting what you are doing.
I am pretty sure we have all done this at one point or another in our lives and that is you are driving down the road, a road you have traveled many times, the weather is nice and the radio is going and you are just cruising before you know it you are going over the speed limit. You look up and see blue lights in your rear view mirror, now the thinking comes in, how do you explain this one. Yes, it happened to me, was going into town and knew the cops sit on that road, but was enjoying the weather and the music playing and not paying attention to my foot on the pedal.
When the cop says, “Do you know how fast you were going?” I honestly could not answer him, I was only going about 10 miles over (but still over). He asked me why I was going so fast. My answer was honestly I was just enjoying the weather and the music and not paying attention. I was lucky because he said since I was actually honest about it; he let me off with a warning. Saved me money!
This is where emotions affected my critical thinking, because I was not thinking, I was in a happy, energetic, and general feel good mood, enjoying the weather and the music, I traveled faster then I should have, had I been paying attention to the speed limit signs I would not .

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Research Project Information
Part 1: Literature Review
Your literature review should be 4-5 pages (6-7 if working in
pairs) in length (excluding title page and reference section),
typed (12 point font), and double spaced. Paper topics must
relate to studies in sociology and must be geared toward survey
research. NOTE: papers submitted for another class cannot be
submitted for this assignment – this is academic dishonesty. Use
peer reviewed articles or chapters, do not use reviews of the
literature. Be sure to narrow you topic so that your paper has
depth. Students are asked to come to my office to discuss paper
topics and prepare an outline for the paper to review with me
before beginning. Projects MUST fall under minimal risk
criteria (see ethics guidelines that will be distributed in class).
You may work in pairs or individually. If you work with a
partner you must submit a peer evaluation of your partner for
each section of the project.
Introduction (10 points)
· Introduce the topic
· State the argument or purpose of the review in a clear thesis
(Why is this topic relevant?)
· State topic limits you have set (how have your narrowed your
topic?)
3. Synthesis and critique of relevant research materials (25 points)
This is the most important part of the paper. In this section,
relevant research
literature should be discussed and critically evaluated. This
section should:
· Inform the reader of the relevant theoretical background to the
topic
· Provide an integrated discussion of previous research related
to the topic (do not simply list studies – integrate)
· Prepare the reader for the hypotheses you will make in the last
part of your paper
- Consider the limitations and flaws of the literature in the
topic area (think
about methods used in the studies reviewed)
Conclusion (10 points)
· A paragraph which affirms the purpose or argument of the
introductory paragraph. Integrate and summarize how the ideas
presented are connected and linked
· Be sure to show that your review has lead you to the
consideration of your research question(s)
· Set the stage for your own research project (why do we need
to do the study you are proposing?)
· Hypotheses – close with your specific research hypotheses
Style (5 points)
· References made according to APA style conventions
· Writing skills (spelling, grammar, sentence structure etc)
without flaws
· Presented in a professional manner
Carefully proofread your papers before you hand them in!
Students should retain a copy of all submitted assignments (in
case of loss), or the need for a Review of Assigned Standing
arises.
4. Writing and Reference Resources:

Manual of the APA (6th ed.). Washington, DC: Author.
Part 2: Ethics tutorial and Consent Form
1) Students are to complete the Ethics tutorial found at:
http://www.pre.ethics.gc.ca/eng/education/tutorial-didacticiel/
and submit the certificate of completion – 10 points
2) Students are to complete a consent form that relates to their
survey project following the “consent form guidelines” found at
(and posted in Canvas):

- 10 points
Part 3: Methods Section and Survey
Please note: For part 3 of the assignment you will be graded on
the description of the measures (methods section) and survey
development (appendix). Please also attach either your
literature review or enough of it to show your research
question(s)/hypotheses. You will lose 5 points for not
providing some background context for me to look at when
assessing your survey (e.g. a copy of the literature review or
introduction).

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CATEGORICAL &
CONTINUOUS VARIABLES
The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to
determine whether there are any statistically
significant differences between the means of two or more
independent (unrelated) groups (although you
tend to only see it used when there is a minimum of three,
17. rather than two groups).
For three groups and more, a statistically significant ANOVA
tells you that is at least one mean comparaison
between the groups is statistically significant. (Hint: between
lower- vs. highest mean group.)
From StackOverFlow:
“In the typical ANOVA we have a categorical variable with
different groups, and we attempt to determine
whether the measurement of a continuous variable differs
between groups.”
Exercise 2 – One-way ANOVA – DEGREE_TYPE_LAB_3 and
SALARY
One-Way ANOVA can tell us if there is a statistically
significant difference in “mean” salary between UBC
BA, BSc, and Bcom degree holders who have a LinkedIn

not too scary. You are looking at
salary measures for three different groups.
The first thing to do is to look at the Graph “Means Plots”:
Q.2.2: By looking at both the graph and the descriptive

salary of UBC graduates? (4 pts)
Lab 3 – SPSS [ANOVA & REGRESSION]

Now that you have a basic understanding of the descriptive
results, let’s look at the ANOVA table:
19. There is always a lot of information, but the important thing to
pay attention is:
doing before looking at the results.
-way ANOVA. We want to know if there
is a statistically significant difference
between the salary of BA, BSc, and BCom holders?
Put differently, what is the probability that the difference is
due to chance alone?
o Null hypothesis: no difference
o Alternative hypothesis: not due to chance and related to
categorical variable
-value, that is, the
significance statistics.
Q.2.3: What is the result of the one-way ANOVA test? What
does it tell us about the relationship
between salary and bachelor degree types? (4 pts)
Important Point (and frustrating things with one-way ANOVA)
he difference in salary statistically significant between BA
and BSc, or between BSc and Bcom?
-way ANOVA doesn’t tell us that!
-way ANOVA is telling you is this: “there is at least
ONE mean comparison between the
groups that is statistically significant”.

FROM ANOVA TO REGRESSION
The best way to think of the differences between ANOVA and
REGRESSION is to look at the
kind of variables used for each:
26. variable of choice
o 1 dependent continuous variable
o 1 or multiple independent categorical variable(s)
o In terms of statistical language, in comparing means, ANOVA
ask how much the
difference between these groups (e.g. race, gender, job type)
explain variation in
salary
ith dummy variables
o 1 dependent continuous variable (but can also be categorical)

o 1 or multiple independent and control variable(s)

categorical variable
significance?

Skills
* List dependent variable you want to predict in your regression
model (2 pts)
* List 2 control variables you want to include in your regression
model (4 pts)
* List 3 independent variables you want to include in your
regression model (6 pts)
STEP 1: Dealing with Independent Categorical Variables
28. * In linear regression, the arbitrary assignment of numerical
values to each degree type variable’s
attributes (1, 2, 3) would be interpret numerically. As we know,
apart from distinguishing each
attribute from one another, the numerical value doesn’t mean
anything in themselves.
* In linear regression, all independent categorical variables
need to be recoded as dummy
variables as well to allow the model to differentiate between the
effect of each degree type on
annual salary.
* Remember differentiating between each degree type is
something ANOVA was not able to tell
us. This is key to remember.
* Recoding dummy variables is what allowed to look at the
specific effect of each attribute on
annual income.

What do you see? Two things should be noteworthy:
1. degree-type-BA is statistically significant
2. degree-type-Bsc is statistically significant
Remark I
In plain language, the effect of holding a BA vs. two other types
of degree help explain the
variation in annual salary. More precisely, holding a BA has a
negative effect on annual salary.
Remark II
Remember when we left Bcom out of the regression model
earlier? Bcom is the referent. What is
that means? Holding a BA has a negative effect on annual
salary. Compare to Bcom holder, BA
holder earn on average 17, 454.18$ less annually. You can see
here that what a REGRESSION

32. CONTROL VARIABLE(S)
Since the beginning of the semester, Dr. Bartolic and I have
been bugging you with control variable(s). We
shall now see why.
We discussed the limitation of ANOVA earlier. That said, the
two-way ANOVA reveals that gender was
significant. It is thus important to add GENDER and see if its
change anything to the explanatory power of
degree-type on salary. In statistics language, we want to see if a
portion of the variation that was attributed
to degree-type in our previous model could not, in fact, due to
gender.
Let’s add gender:
o Add GENDER to Independent(s) block
o Click OK and run the regression

Q3: On average, economists published 4 academic articles in
their entire life.
True or False. Why?
INTERPRETATION OF MEAN DIFFERENCE AND
CONFIDENCE INTERVAL
This specific test tells us that students in the Econ field will
publish less than those in
other fields. In fact, by the end of PhD graduation non-
economics PhDs have published,
on average, 3.6121 papers more than those in the Econ field.
Looking at the 95%
confidence interval of difference we can assume that 95% of
these cases will fall
between 2.7939 or 4.4303 more papers published by those
outside of econ field for their
PhD.
Q4: The effect of holding a BSc degree compare to the other
types of degrees, BA and
Bcom, has positive effect on annual salary of the individual.
Based on Coefficients Table below, is this statement true or
false? Why?
36. 3 | P a g e
EXCELLENT UNDERSTANDING OF CONTROL VARIABLE
Q4.4: Looking at the Coefficients and Summary Table, what can
you conclude on
the effect of gender on salary? Also, did introducing gender
to the
regression model changed the overall effect of degree-type?
(10 pts)
As shown in the tables, the unstandardized coefficient for the
dummy variable
“Gender of Graduate” is -16412.081 which suggests the average
annual salary
for female graduates is 16412.081 units of salary less when
compare to that of
male graduates while holding all other variables constant. And
the p-value
(0.000) of this coefficient indicates the salary difference
between male and
female is statistically significant. Moreover, the adjusted R
square for this
model is 0.710 which is larger than the adjusted R square
(0.538) of the model
without the variable “Gender of Graduate”. It means the control
variable “Gender
of Graduate” helps to explain the variation in the dependent
variable “salary”. By
comparing the unstandardized coefficients of degree type in two
37. regression
tables, we can see the coefficients of the variable “degree-type-
BA” and “degree-
type-BSC” in the model with the variable “Gender of Graduate”
are smaller than
that of the model without the variable “Gender of Graduate”,
which means the
variable “Gender of Graduate” reduced the explanatory power
of degree-type on
salary.
Therefore, we could conclude that the control variable “Gender
of Graduate”
changed the overall effect of degree-type on average annual
salary.

38. HOW TO INTERPRET UNSTADARDIZED COE. FOR
CONTINUOUS VARIABLE
INTERTATION OF REGRESSION TABLE
Q5.4: Interpret the results. (10 pts)
As shown in the tables, the unstandardized coefficient of the
variable “# of Job
Experience” is 1276.059 (p=0.033), we expect 1276.059 units
increase in salary of
graduates for every unit increase in the number of job
experience while holding all other
variables constant. Similarly, we expect 306.390 (p=0.090)
units decrease in salary of
graduates for every unit increase in the number of skills while
holding all other
variables constant, but the p-value (0.090) indicates the
coefficient is not statistically
significant. Besides, the R square (0.040) suggests only about
4% of the variation in the
dependent variable (salary) are explained by these two
independent variables (# of Job
Experience and # of skills).
5 | P a g e
39. Q5: Why is Degree Type the only independent variable
recoded into multiple
dummy variables? (4 pts)
Because it is a categorical variable. In linear regressions all
independent variables that are

40. Lab Assignment 1: Descriptive Analysis
What does the trajectory of UBC graduates look like on the job
market? Institutional and provincial
survey initiatives all assure us that graduated students are doing
great! They are mostly all employed
and extremely satisfied with what their post-secondary
education brought them. What kinds of jobs
are they holding? Survey’s data-points are highly aggregate and
tend to answer this question with
concepts like “public sector”, “private sector”, or “service
industry”? How many jobs can a recent
graduate go through in their first few years on the job market?
Do UBC domestic graduates stay in the
province or do they tend to be mobile?
To start answering labor-market questions with a finer level of
granularity, Dr. Bartolic’s students built
a dataset using UBC graduate LinkedIn profiles. Using the
UBC 2016 graduation convocation guide,
they created a dataset that included all bachelor-level 2016
spring graduates (n=5437) and collected
LinkedIn data for an initial sample of 130 cases. Preliminary
analysis indicates that 23% (n=1177) of
all UBC 2016 spring bachelor graduates have a LinkedIn
account.
In today’s lab, we will start exploring this unique dataset using
SPSS. Let’s figure out what your
future might looks like together!
SPSS WORKFLOW AND DATA MANAGEMENT
1. Open SPSS
41. 2. Load Dataset File (ubc_grad_2016_SPSS.sav)
3. Today we are working with AN EXISTING DATASET, but
for your project, your first step
in SPSS would be:
download your data file
from Qualtrics
4. Spend a few minutes to explore the dataset. Look at the

Exercise 1 – ANSWER SOME BASIC QUESTIONS NOW (10
pts)
42. Now that you are a bit more familiar with the dataset, please
answer the four following questions:
1. What is the # of cases in the dataset (2 pts):
2. What does each “case” represent? (2 pts)
3. What are the # of variables in the dataset (2 pts):
4. Name two variables from the dataset and explain what they
are measuring (4 pts):
Exercise 2 – CREATE A NEW VARIABLE: RELIGION (10 pts)
Pay attention students, this is one of the first steps you will
have to do after you have collected your
data. You will open SPSSS, create a new dataset (step 3 below),
and create new variables to populate
your dataset (all those independent and dependent variables we
have been bugging you about for 1
whole month now!)
PAY ATTENTION DEAR STUDENTS!!!!!
Two ways to create a new variable, both from DATA or
VARIABLE VIEW
The best way is the following:
1. Click on Variable View (see Fig. 1 for help)
2. Say you want to add the variable RELIGION after RACE,
43. right click on the number
associated with the variable after RACE and select Insert
Variable:
3. Start with Column “Name” and Name the Variable:
RELIGION (no space)
Lab 1 – SPSS univariate statistics
3 | P a g e
4. Go to Column “Label” and describe in a few words what the
variable is
5. Go to Column “Values” and click on the small three dots.
This should open a pop-up.
Fig. 2: CREATE A NEW VARIABLE (variable view)
Column “Values” (continued):
Here you have some thinking to do. How do you want to code
the variable?
o Christian code as “1” and non-Christian as “0”
44. to capture
o Christian; “0”, Muslim; “1”, Jewish; “2”; Other; “3”, Missing;
“888”
o Sounds good? Well, let’s code. The results should be:

Are we done creating the new variable? No!
Next Two Steps:
6. Go to Column “Missing” and click on three small dots. A
pop-up should open.
7. Go to Column “Measure” and select the appropriate type of
variable. See you’re putting
your hard-bookish knowledge into practice here.
8. SAVE YOUR FILE OFTEN TO NOT LOOSE YOUR
45. PRECIOUS WORK!
9. When you save, SPSS will open a pop-up “output file”. You
don’t need to save it. Just close
it and don’t think about it.
Next Final Steps:
10. Switch to “Data View” (see Fig. 1 for help)
11. Find your new variable RELIGION.
12. Manually input an attribute for each respondent. (Obviously
here, this is a make-believe
variable, but with your own data you would input real data for
each case.)
13. SAVE YOUR WORK.

Exercice 3 – RECODING A VARIABLE: DEPRESSION ITEMS
(10 pts)
1. In the dataset (either Data or Variable View Mode), find the
11 depression-related variables
and indicate their name below (2 pts).
2. Reeeeeee-coding time. Why do we need to recode data?
a. Imagine for the Religion Variable, you didn’t assign
numerical values to each
attribute and instead your variable Religion in your dataset was
RAW. Raw means
that instead of number as attributes, each respondent’s response
would be a “string”:
e.g. Muslim, Jewish…. Why is that a problem? (1 BONUS pt)

3. The depression questionnaire included 11 items. The general
idea is that the higher a
respondent’s score on the scale the more severe/likely is their
depression.
a. Carefully read each item and find inconsistencies with the
idea that a “high score”
indicates “depression” and “lower score” indicates “non-
47. depression”.
b. How many did you find? Indicate question [#] here. (2 pts)

Introduction
Video games for a very long time had been exclusive for those
often called nerds or geeks and often suffer abuse or bullying
because of it. But over time, video games as a hobby is
becoming more acceptable with their peers as handheld consoles
80. and home consoles are being enjoyed by both children and
adults alike. With the introduction of smartphones and the
thousands upon thousands of accessible games often
downloadable for free on the app store, the hobby is becoming
less of a niche and more of a norm. It is no longer a rare sight
to see a middle age man playing some degree of video game on
their smartphone, computer, or a dedicated home console. The
hobby is now being openly enjoyed by everyone away from the
scrutiny of others. But as video games start to gain traction in
the mainstream media platforms, many begin to wonder or
speculate the negative and positive impacts video games have
on the player’s life. Video games have always been a
controversial topic for debate. It’s often that we hear news
shows blaming violence on video games due to the playful use
of firearms in these games. It is also equally frequent to see
news articles on the internet denying the relationship and
causation of video games and violence. It is to this end that I
would dedicate my time to explore all the impacts video games
have on the player base. I would like to look through both the
positive and negative effect video games have on multiple
aspects of the players life such as their social behaviours in and
out of the game, emotional state, increased aggression (if any),
reasons for playing, and how they view video games as a part of
their life.
I believe that due to the recent rise in popularity and general
81. public acceptance (mainstream media and personalities openly
admitting or supporting video game titles), it is necessary to
fully understand the effect it has on those that spend most of
their days playing. I see a necessity in understanding these
effects to be able to move forward and focus on the positive
impacts and hopefully lessen the negatives.
For this paper, I would like to focus on the player base that
spends a great deal of time playing video games. I will exclude
more or less casual gamers who play for a few minutes on a bus
stop or those that spend a few hours on a crossword puzzle
game on their phone. I will also narrow down my research on
those video games that include a community to talk, interact,
and play with or against to be able to easily compare and
contrast the players’ online persona with their real life
counterpart. I would further narrow this down to the largest
target demographic of video games, teenagers (13-19 years old)
and young adults (20-30), due to their larger amount of free
time to dedicate to the hobby.
Literature Review
I have first taken a look at the article, “Influences of motives to
play and time spent gaming on the negative consequences of
adolescent online computer gaming,” by Charlotta Hellstrom,
Kent Nilsson, Jerzy Leppert, and Cecilia Aslund. In this article,
it was found that most adolescents reported negative
82. consequences from their gaming habits such as lack of sleep,
unable to complete or start their school works, and conflict with
their parents or siblings. Aside from these common
consequences, some also report skipping school for video
games, and having no time to play or interact with their friends
in real life. The article also found a relation between the
amounts of time spent gaming and experiencing negative
consequences due to it. Finally, the authors focused on motives
as a driving factor for the negative consequences it has on the
players. It was found that if a player uses video game as an
escape from their daily lives, they are at risk for greater
negative consequences as opposed to those that play video
games for fun or for social motives. Comment by François
Lachapelle: No need for that. Use APA format
From the article, “The Multiple Dimensions of video game
effects,” by Douglas Gentile, found similar trend of increased
negative consequence with increased time spent playing video
games. In addition, this research also found a link or relation
between time spent playing video games and obesity. But
despite that, it also focused on the potential positives video
games could have such as the integration of educational video
games for schools. This article further looks into different
dimensions of video games such as content, context, structure,
and mechanics to fully grasp different effects since video games
can be a nebulous subject. Content can vary greatly from
83. educational to violent, and context can include mindless
violence to organized team work. “Critics often cite the
research on the effects of violent video games, whereas
proponents often cite the research on perceptual skills. The
irony is that both the critics and proponents are correct about
the effects that games can have. The flaw is that they extend
their arguments to conclude that video games are ultimately
harmful or beneficial.” (Gentile, 2011). Comment by François
Lachapelle: Quote too long. Also need page number. See APA
format.
Through this research, I found it abundantly clear that there are
negative consequences for playing video games. But unlike how
it’s painted in the media, there are positive effects as well.
Things like increased performance in team oriented activities,
decision making abilities, improved hand-eye coordination are
just some common positive effect video games have on the
players. Much like the first article reviewed, many researches
fall into the category of pros and cons and often find results
supporting their conclusions. While not necessarily incorrect, it
ignores a large chunk of consequences of video games. Similar
to the second article, I wish to pursue this topic from both sides
of the spectrum and expose all consequences both positive and
negative to let the audience decide whether or not video games
is ultimately good for their lives. I also believe that as video
game reach spreads towards both the younger and the young
84. adult population, I find it necessary to extend the sample age
range from solely teenagers to include young adults as well.
Conclusion
Video games today are more than just a hobby to some. It can
be used as an escape from their mundane lives or a mean to
socialize or interact with others. Due to the recent acceptance of
video games to our society, I can firmly state that it is
necessary to put further research on effects it has on the
populations. Understanding these effects to the fullest would
allow us to make changes or regulate certain types of games to
better cater to the audience to focus on the positive impacts and
reduce the negatives. While I don’t believe it’s possible to
eliminate the negatives entirely, I know that awareness of the
negatives is a great first step towards the betterment of society
and the video gaming community all together.

Clement, a few comments here. First, your paper is 3 and a half
pages. We asked for 4-5 pages. Secondly, how can you do a lit
review while discussing two articles as listed in your
references? In the future, I would expect more efforts.
HYPOTHESES:
The conclusion was supposed to be where you explain in detail
all your hypotheses. Please work on it and resubmit as soon as
possible. I saw online that you tried to re-submit your
hypotheses. The problem is that in the conclusion here, I don’t
see one hypothesis. Again, as Dr. Bartolic mentioned in her
feedback to you online, you are not ready for the next step.
Need to work hard on your hypotheses now.
POPUPATION:
In theory, your target population is good, but in practice, I don’t
think its realistic. Remember you need to find 100 participants
that will fit that. Please review accordingly.
For this paper, I would like to focus on the player base that
