Design Thinking: Idea Generation
My Problem Statement
Stakeholder Professor VB needs a way to show that education is long term
because the skills that are taught besides the technical knowledge are meant
for life.
Students need motivation to realise that education is long term and give it their best by
being creative. This is the issue around which I based my solutions on.
I have used the constraints/prompts that Leticia had provided. I believe my list of solutions
has existing ones, new ones, crazy ones and some practical solutions.
50 solutions to enable
motivation and show that
education is long term
1. If the student does
not get good grades,
then no degree is
awarded
2. Give regular lectures
on the importance of
education in life
3. Keep the students in
school till they are
work-efficient
4. Ask the students to
interact regularly with
professionals who can
make a difference
5. Instil fear of no
education in students
6. No degree means
the student will not be
hired for any kind of
work
7. Introduce courses
that interest students
8 . Introduce new and
interesting degrees and
certificates
9. Introduce interesting
activities as part of
coursework
10. Introduce life skills
which instil discipline
and professionalism as
part of education
11. Introduce students
to the industry in the
early education years
12. Request people in
the industry to involve
students in their search
for solutions
13. Introduce degrees
and certifications that
are relevant to the
current or forcasted
economy
50 solutions to enable
motivation and show that
education is long term
14. Discipline and
professionalism can
also be graded during a
student's education.
15. Industry as an
employer can give
higher weightage to
grades in discipline
than technical know-
how
16. Why not remove
technical education?
Lets have only life skills
as the education
17. How about no
education system atall?
18. Parents can advice
the students the need
for education without
the "pressure"
19. Grandparents can
share their life stories
and emphasize the
need for education
20. Introduce the
concept of "working"
from an early age
21. Parents can
introduce "work
assignments" as and
when topics are
introduced
22. Parents can
introduce creative
problem solving at
home
23. Revamp the
education system
24. Remove
distractions that affect
studying during their
courses
25. Advice the parents
to involve the children
in their decision
making
26. Create new jobs for
students
27. Change the way the
industry works so all
the jobs become
interesting
28. Have a time
machine in which the
students can travel to
the future and see for
themselves the effects
of good education or
lack of it
29. Give students
photographic memory
that can allow all the
reading students would
like to have
30. Magic! So students
can be in more than
one place at a time
which helps to attend
as many courses as
they want
50 solutions to enable
motivation and show that
education is long term
31. Promote reading
32. Promote writing
33. Encourage parents
to make children
responsible for their
purchases
34. Encourage parents
to make children partly
responsible for costs of
their education
35. Encourage students
to plan their future and
not just their career
36. Introduce case
studies that analyse the
effects of education in
life
37. How about a
finishing school
company? The students
run a company which is
more or less real, for a
period of 2 years
before entering the
industry
38. Introduce video
games/ 3D games that
has situations of life
39. Introduce a study
that shows how
education helps in
family life
40. Introduce a study
that shows students
how education helps in
bringing up their
children
41. Make education
less job oriented and
more about life
Design Thinking: Idea Selection
i. the most practical idea (one that could be easily implemented)
• Point 10. Introduce life skills which instil discipline and professionalism as part
of education
This can be easily implemented! The existing education system can introduce a
course on life skills which is also graded and has as much weightage as the
other courses.
ii. the most disruptive idea (one that would make a huge impact, regardless of how
feasible or affordable it is)
• Point 16. Why not remove technical education? Let us have only life skills as
the education
iii. your favorite idea (one idea that you are excited about for whatever reason... you
don’t have to justify why)
• Point 29. Give everyone photographic memory that can allow all the reading
students would like to have
This is would be a wonderful idea because students want to read so much but
cannot do so! Imagine how photographic memory will give all the knowledge
in a jiffy and so there would be time in this fast paced world for learning and
practising life skills too!
