6. When you think about the Solar System, do you picture a bunch of stars
and planets orbiting them? Or are you more likely to think of planets
orbiting around their suns?
Well, both are true! The Solar System originated 5 billion years ago (yes,
that’s right—five billion) and has since grown to include the Sun and the
nine planets. The planets are all located in a flat plane called the ecliptic.
This can be thought of as a giant circle that marks out the path that our
solar system takes around the Sun.
7. The Sun is at the center of our solar system, while Mercury is
closest to Earth and Venus is farthest away from it. Jupiter is in
between Mercury and Venus and Saturn is farther from Earth than
Jupiter. This means that when looking at all nine planets from above
(which we have done), they form an upside-down “V” shape with
Saturn at one end and Jupiter at the other end:
