SOIL POLLUTION :
 With the rise of concrete
buildings and roads, one part of
the Earth that we rarely see is
the soil.
 The plants that feed us grow in
soil and keeping it healthy is
essential to maintaining a
beautiful planet.
 Soil also suffers from pollution.
The pollution of soil is a
common thing these days.
 The degradation of soil is
called soil pollution.
CAUSES :
 Industrial Activity
 Deforestation and soil erosion
 Agricultural activities
 Waste Disposal/Sewage System
 Acid Rain
 Construction activities
 Nuclear waste
 Mining activities
 Accidental Oil Spills
INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES :
 Industrial waste not properly
disposed lingers in the soil surface for a long
time and makes it unsuitable for use.
 Industrial wastes include the ores like
iron,aluminium,lead and different minerals
like coal.
DEFORESTATION AND SOIL EROSION :
 Land that is once converted into a dry or barren
land, can never be made fertile again.
 In search of more land, potent land is hunted and its
indigenous state is compromised with.
AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES :
 Farmers often use highly toxic fertilizers and
pesticides to get rid off insects, fungi and
bacteria from their crops.
 Overuse of these chemicals result in
contamination and poisoning of soil.
WASTE DISPOSAL OR SEWAGE TREATMENT :
 There is also a large amount of waste
that is dumped directly into landfills in
the form of diapers.
 Large amount of solid waste is leftover
once the sewage has been treated. The
leftover material is sent to landfill site
which end up in polluting the soil.
ACID RAIN :
 Acid rain is caused when pollutants
present in the air mixes up with the rain
and fall back on the ground.
 This polluted water could dissolve
away some of the important nutrients
found in soil and change the structure
of the soil.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES :
Due to urbanization, large amount of construction
activities are taking place .
 They result in large waste articles like wood,
metal, bricks, plastic .
MINING ACTIVITIES :
 During extraction and mining activities,
several land spaces are created beneath the
surface .
Land caving in occurs; this nature’s way of
filling the spaces left out after mining .
NUCLEAR WASTES :
 Left over radioactive material contains harmful and
toxic chemicals that can affect human health.
 They are dumped beneath the earth to avoid any
casualty.
ACCIDENTAL OIL SPILLS :
Chemicals in the fuel deteriorates the quality
of soil and make them unsuitable for
cultivation .
 These chemicals can enter into the
groundwater through soil and make the water
undrinkable.
EFFECTS :
 SOIL DEGRADATION
 CHANGE IN CLIMATE PATTERNS
 EFFECT ON HUMAN HEALTH
 EFFECT ON WILDLIFE
 AIRPOLLUTION
 EFFECTS TOURISM
 BIO ACCUMULATION
SOIL DEGRADATION :
 Loss of fertile land for agriculture, forest
cover, fodder patches for grazing etc.
 Effects all systems of life
EFFECT ON HUMAN HEALTH :
 Lead to problem of skin cancer and human
respiratory system.
 Toxic chemicals can reach our body through foods
and vegetables that we eat as they are grown in
polluted soil.
EFFECT ON WILDLIFE :
Loss of habitat and natural environment .
 Species are pushed to the verge of extinction,
due to no homeland.
EFFECTS TOURISM :
 City looses its attraction as landfills do not look
good when you move around the city.
AIR POLLUTION :
Landfills across the city keep on growing due
to increase in waste and are later burned
which leads to air pollution.
They become home for rodents, mice etc
which in turn transmit diseases.
BIO ACCUMULATION :
Bioaccumulation refers to the accumulation of substances, such as pesticides, or other
chemicals in an organism.
Bioaccumulation occurs when an organism absorbs a toxic substance at a rate greater than that
at which the substance is lost.
REMEDIES :
 Make people aware about the concept of Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
 Reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural activities.
 Avoid buying packages items as they will lead to garbage and end up in landfill site.
 Ensure that you do not litter on the ground and do proper disposal of garbage.
 Buy biodegradable products.
 Do Organic gardening and eat organic food that will be grown without the use of pesticides.
 Create dumping ground away from residential areas.
