Software asset management (SAM) involves managing and optimizing an organization's purchase, deployment, maintenance, use, and disposal of software applications. SAM helps limit legal and financial exposure from software audits and controls risks from improperly licensed or outdated software vulnerable to security issues. SAM applications support inventorying software, metering application usage, controlling software deployment, and patch management but not concurrent user licensing. Nassau BOCES uses Novell Zenworks for some SAM functions. Going forward, the organization plans to review contracts and spending against licenses and install base and continue monitoring compliance.
