Be More Strategic - Grace Hopper Conference Oct 2013Karen Catlin
Have you been told you need to be more strategic? If so, welcome to the club!
Regardless of your role, not being strategic can hurt your career. You may not be included in meetings, considered for projects, or invited on customer visits. Ultimately, you may not be promoted.
Presented at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, Oct 2013, this panel featured women who doubted their strategic ability at some point in their careers and what they learned about being strategic.
Technology and innovation continue to flip every industry on its head. Leading organizations have embraced a new model of operating that reward productivity over presence. And while corporates flex tired post-industrial ways, a movement of creative independents steadily grows stronger.
Social Fabric's Future of Work series celebrates the folks that are reinventing work in real time. Now touring its 4th continent after Europe, Asia, and the Americas
Part talk and part workshop, we help design a future where you wake up every day doing your best work. We discover what you're working on and how you can accelerate with the help of your community.
Participants come away a fresh perspective and actionable ways to design lasting work rhythms and rituals.
The document appears to be a series of tweets between @tomderuyck and @anoukw1 discussing research communities and online research techniques. It includes comments on the representativeness of communities, the benefits of more participants, the motivations of community members, challenges with gamification and creative online techniques, the value of mobile research, and how community members can help researchers do their jobs better.
The document discusses challenges with disruptive change and leadership. It notes that 70% of change initiatives fail and 1 in 5 people experience mental health issues. The premise is about solving the right problem, being a good storyteller, and recognizing when you are the problem. It suggests asking different questions, not losing sight of the problem, and managing unintended consequences when solving problems. For storytelling, it advises that emotion is key, telling the story from multiple perspectives, and creating experiences. The document also emphasizes the importance of mental health, staying connected, detaching to re-appraise, and giving back. It poses three questions leaders should ask themselves and recommends three readings on coaching, storytelling, and brain functioning.
The document discusses how data and statistics can provide important insights if analyzed properly. It notes that preconceived ideas can prevent people from seeing what the data actually shows. It also recommends using tools like Gapminder to better link data to design and findings ways to make more data searchable and accessible to inform decision making and performance management for managers.
The document discusses developing an editorial calendar to manage content marketing and social media posting. It recommends creating a calendar to plan content at least a week in advance, and up to six weeks for events. An editorial calendar helps with time management, risk prevention by providing backup planning, and strategic messaging and planning by coordinating posts across multiple platforms. It should also be used to schedule posts in advance using tools like Facebook scheduling, Hootsuite or Sprout Social. The calendar doubles as a marketing calendar and is key to reducing time spent while increasing impact.

Margaret Stewart of Facebook thinks designing elegant tools may be the highest-impact opportunity for designers today. At Pardot (part of Salesforce), we can attest to that.
The star of our app, Engagement Studio, was borne out of a desire to go deeper into interaction and interface design. By seeking out opportunities to make our users' experience truly meaningful, we blazed a trail that defied conventions and empowered the people we serve. A simple workflow builder became a canvas for bold automation and experimentation.
In this session, we’ll look at how our user-centric design process generated innovative new ideas that invite people to be creative. You’ll see how these phases came together to make meaningful improvements on a “common" interface:
- Reframing questions and infusing research early to discover opportunities
- Balancing product compromise with design principles
- Validating inspired concepts through clear UX objectives

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
