British broadcasting history

            Radio

Radio was first used by armies and by ships for communicating from one
point to another. For a long time the main radio stations listened to were broadcast
from the BBC. Before Radio 1 started in 1967, many young people listened to illegal
‘pirate’ radio stations, such as Radio Caroline, which broadcast pop music from ships
at sea.
