ABOUT THE SOCIETY FOR INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY
The society for industrial chemistry was established with the intention to bring
together research professionals from industries, academia, and entrepreneurs
to develop relations and exchange technical knowhow in areas of mutual
interests and relevance to Indian Industries. This society is only one and half
year old and has organized three seminars in Mumbai on different topics of
relevance to the industry. The topics of these seminars were polymers and their
characterization, surfactants and their applications and performance chemicals
for paint technology. Currently the society has about 125 life members. With
the active cooperation of the members and Indian industry, we plan to organize
regular seminars and discussion meetings on industrially important subjects.
We invite you to become the life member of this society and share your
knowledge, expertise and thoughts with others.
ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Materials characterisation is an important step for all industrial processes.
Complete characterisation of the raw materials for chemical composition,
microstructure etc is essential to get the finished products with desired
qualities. Further the characterisation of the finished products by an accredited
laboratory is also required for customer satisfaction and to establish the brand
reputation. Broadly speaking the material characterisation involved the
determination of chemical composition, phase purity by structural analysis and
morphology of the substance. For powders and dispersions, the detailed
particle size analysis is required for a variety of industrial processes and
applications. This can be effectively monitored by dynamic light scattering
technique. In the characterisation of organic compounds, the Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance technique provides very valuable information as both carbon and
hydrogen nuclei, which are the major constituents of organic compounds, can
be extensively probed by this technique. During the surface reactions like
catalysis, it is important to probe the changes in the oxidation state of the
active component of the catalyst. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis
(ESCA) provides the desired answer. Surface characterisation and phase
identification of solids is achieved by electron microscopy and diffraction based
techniques. In this seminar, the subject specialists, who have vast experience of
using and developing these techniques, will share their knowledge and
experience with the delegates of the seminar.
