Societies can be organized through social solidarity and social control. Durkheim identified mechanical solidarity based on shared values in simpler societies and organic solidarity based on interdependence in more complex societies. Tönnies distinguished between Gemeinschaft, traditional communities based on kinship and locality, and Gesellschaft, modern societies based on formal social contracts and impersonal relationships.
