Ashoka was one of the greatest emperors of India who ruled the Maurya Empire in the 3rd century BCE. After experiencing the immense suffering caused by the Kalinga war, in which thousands died, Ashoka embraced Buddhism and worked to promote nonviolence and social reform. He sent his children to spread Buddhism in Sri Lanka and built various Buddhist structures like stupas and pillars across India. Ashoka is remembered for being a major social reformer in India who modernized laws and established principles of dharma.
