5. Student engagement occurs when “students make a
psychological investment in learning. They try hard to learn
what school offers. They take pride not simply in earning the
formal indicators of success (grades), but in understanding
the material and incorporating or internalizing it in their
lives.”
Newmann, F. (1992) Student Engagement and Achievement in American
Secondary Schools. Teachers College Press. pp. 2–3.

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR IN-CLASS USE
7. 1. Backchanneling
A back channel is where
attendees are texting or
tweeting information about
a presentation or event
using SMS, a chat
function or Twitter. The
front channel, for lack of a
better word and as
opposed to a back channel,
is the main presentation
being delivered by the
speaker.

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR OUT-OF-CLASS USE
We already know anecdotally that students are psychologically invested in social media, so why not connect the two?
(add more reasoning here)
Benefits:
-encourages students to take bite-sized notes (which involves synthesizing the information)
-increases engagement in traditional from-the-podium lecture formats
-for large classes, allows the students to ask the instructor questions and provide comments
-students might already be using a backchannel whether you want them to or not, so you might as well legitimize it.

Extend the classroom into the real world
Why do this?
-Gets students to actively think about course material outside of the classroom
-Peers/public may see what they post, so they’re probably less likely to submit subpar work/thoughts
-Benefits entire class (and future classes) because all posted material (if used with a hashtag) can be easily accessible in one place (say, from Storify or Tagboard)
-Discipline-specific ideas: architecture (find local examples of certain styles),
