History of…
It is… A social network service essentially consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests within their individual networks.
How it works… The main types of social networking services are those Which contain category places (such as former school-year or classmates) Means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) . Recommendation system linked to trust.
Who uses what? Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn being the most widely used in North America Nexopia - Canada Bebo,Hi5, Hyves -Netherlands StudiVZ - Germany iWiW - Hungary Tuenti (mostly in Spain), Decayenne, Tagged, XING, Badoo and Skyrock in parts of Europe Orkut and Hi5 in South America and Central America Friendster, Mixi, Multiply, Orkut, Wretch, renren and Cyworld in Asia and the Pacific Islands and Orkut and Facebook in India.

Twitter… Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Facebook opened on September 26, 2006, to everyone of ages 13 and older with a valid e-mail address To date more than 400 million active users 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day Average user has 130 friends People spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook
