So what is Social Media?

•  The internet has been available since the 1960s as
   ARPANET

•  Access was limited to the military and universities

•  First Website in 1991

•  Dial-up access in 1993 to the public

•  Web 1.0

•  Not Social Media
So what is Social Media?

•  Web 1.0:

•  Early stage of World Wide Web

•  Users can only view, cannot contribute

•  Editing only done by owner of the website

•  No user-generated content
So what is Social Media?
•  The big transformation: Web 2.0

•  Coined in 1999

•  Resurfaced in 2004

•  Allows users to interact and collaborate

•  Ongoing interactive dialogue

•  Social networking, user created sites,
   blogging, video sharing, etc…
So what is Social Media?
•  Social media is the use of web-based and
   mobile technologies to turn communication
   into interactive dialogue. It is a group of
   Internet-based applications that build on the
   ideological and technological foundations of
   Web 2.0, which allows the creation and
   exchange of user-generated content.
Web 2.0

•  A Web 2.0 site allows users to interact
   and collaborate with each other in
   a dialogue as creators of user-
   generated content in a virtual
   community, in contrast to websites
   where users are limited to the passive
   viewing of content that was created for
   them.
Social media is an
  online conversation!
  Look Who’s Online:   •    your school
•  your family         •    your fans
•  your schoolmates    •    your neighborhood
•  your community      •    your acquaintances
•  Your childhood      •    anyone who has
   friends                  internet access and
                            an opinion
But to you, all this is …
So what is Social Media
REALLY?
Listen
•  Find where the people that
   interest you are participating
•  Read what they have to say
•  Google your interests (and
   your name)
•  Find tools that can help you
   listen
•  Discover what is happening
   out there
Share Your Content
•  Don’t be afraid to share.
   You need to share
   information to get the
   value out of social media
•  Update your profile(s) to
   update your readers
•  Tools that promote
   sharing:
 •  Share This, RSS feeds,
    Email a friend
Contribute in a meaningful
  way
•  Think like a contributor
•  Consider what is relevant
   to the community
•  Share your opinion with
   regard to issues of interest
•  Help in creating original
   content, constructive
   discussions, etc…
Be personal
•  Don't shout (?). Don’t be
   extra formal.
•  Speak like yourself – and
   join the conversation
•  Start a conversation–
   give people something
   they can relate to.
•  Most importantly: Be
   yourself
Be transparent & honest

•  Remember: Online
   content is public content.
•  Ask yourself: Would you
   say that in public?
•  Avoid puffery
   (people will ignore it)
•  Avoid evasion and lying
   (people won’t ignore it)
See criticism as an
  opportunity
•  Don’t try to delete or
   remove criticism (it will just
   make it worse)
•  Listen to your detractors
•  Admit your shortcomings
•  Work openly towards an
   explanation and
   legitimate solution

  • 3. So what is Social Media? •  The internet has been available since the 1960s as ARPANET •  Access was limited to the military and universities •  First Website in 1991 •  Dial-up access in 1993 to the public •  Web 1.0 •  Not Social Media
  • 4. So what is Social Media? •  Web 1.0: •  Early stage of World Wide Web •  Users can only view, cannot contribute •  Editing only done by owner of the website •  No user-generated content
  • 5. So what is Social Media? •  The big transformation: Web 2.0 •  Coined in 1999 •  Resurfaced in 2004 •  Allows users to interact and collaborate •  Ongoing interactive dialogue •  Social networking, user created sites, blogging, video sharing, etc…
  • 6. So what is Social Media? •  Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. It is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, which allows the creation and exchange of user-generated content.
  • 7. Web 2.0 •  A Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a dialogue as creators of user- generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them.

  • 31. Share Your Content •  Don’t be afraid to share. You need to share information to get the value out of social media •  Update your profile(s) to update your readers •  Tools that promote sharing: •  Share This, RSS feeds, Email a friend
  • 32. Contribute in a meaningful way •  Think like a contributor •  Consider what is relevant to the community •  Share your opinion with regard to issues of interest •  Help in creating original content, constructive discussions, etc…

  • 34. Be personal •  Don't shout (?). Don’t be extra formal. •  Speak like yourself – and join the conversation •  Start a conversation– give people something they can relate to. •  Most importantly: Be yourself

  • 36. Be transparent & honest •  Remember: Online content is public content. •  Ask yourself: Would you say that in public? •  Avoid puffery (people will ignore it) •  Avoid evasion and lying (people won’t ignore it)
  • 37. See criticism as an opportunity •  Don’t try to delete or remove criticism (it will just make it worse) •  Listen to your detractors •  Admit your shortcomings •  Work openly towards an explanation and legitimate solution
