RACISM

HOW IS RACISMVIEWED IN AMERICA
THE SOCIAL
PROBLEM
 CRACK COCAINE – 699 or higher
die from overdosing every year.
 ECSTASY – 2.1 million ecstasy
pills given out – at a cost of $41
million
 MARIJUANA – One of the most
populist drugs. 95million
Americans ages 12 years and
older report using marijuana
 HEROIN – heroin and morphine
usage was the reason of 51%
accidental deaths from drugs
12.8 million or 6 percent
of the nation use some
type of drug
Drug abuse cost
employers $122 billion
dollars in unproductive
job activities and $15
billion in heath care
coverage
Baltimore, Maryland has
more per capita
individuals living with
heroin addiction than
any other state in the
U.S.
LET’STAKE A LOOK AT DRUG USE
THE SOCIAL
PROBLEM
The terms ‘sexism’ or
‘gender discrimination’
basically means the
prejudicial treatment of
a group or a person.
Sexism in the
Workplace: From being
sexually harassed by
male colleagues to
women getting paid
less for the same jobs.
DISCRIMINATION – AGAINST AGE,
SEX, RELIGION AND CULTURE
THE SOCIAL
PROBLEM
In America are religious
Americans bigots against
Non-believers, Atheists ?
If you saw a Muslim on the
airplane would you be
more fearful and more
likely to request help if
he/she did an action that
looked suspicious than a
non-Muslim?
If you are a Muslim, have
you ever face
discrimination because of
your religion?
RELIGION
 Christianity: 2 billion;
Islam: 1.3 billion;
Hinduism: 900 million;
Secular/Nonreligious/A
gnostic/Atheist: 850
million; Buddhism: 360
million; Chinese
traditional religion: 225
million
THE SOCIAL
PROBLEM
 in 2005, the U.S. abortion rate fell to
19.4 abortions per 1,000 women
between the ages of 15 to 44, the lowest
level since 1974.
 64.4% of all abortions are performed on
never-married women; Married women
account for 18.4% of all abortions and
divorced women obtain 9.4%.
 WORLDWIDE
 Number of abortions per year:
Approximately 42 Million
Number of abortions per day:
Approximately 115,000
Why are abortions down in
America?
White women obtain 60%
of all abortions. However,
their abortion rate is well
below that of minority
women. Black women are
more than 3 times as likely
as white women to have an
abortion, and Hispanic
women are roughly 2
times as likely.
What may contributing to
blacks getting more
abortions then that of
whites?
ABORTION AND ITS IMPLICATIONS
 Who's having abortions (religion)?
Women identifying themselves as Protestants obtain 37.4% of
all abortions in the U.S.; Catholic women account for 31.3%,
Jewish women account for 1.3%, and women with no religious
affiliation obtain 23.7% of all abortions. 18% of all abortions are
performed on women who identify themselves as "Born-
again/Evangelical.”
 Who's having abortions (income)?
Women with family incomes less than $15,000 obtain 28.7% of all
abortions;Women with family incomes between $15,000 and
$29,999 obtain 19.5%;Women with family incomes between
$30,000 and $59,999 obtain 38.0%; Women with family incomes
over $60,000 obtain 13.8%.
SOCIAL PROBLEM
 richest 1 percent of the US
citizens own 40 percent of the
total property of the country,
while 80 percent of US citizens
own just 1% of the property.
 A great number of Americans
suffer from poverty and hunger.
According to the statistics of the
US government, over 32 million
citizens, or 12.7 percent of the
total population of the country,
live under the poverty line.
Are people on
welfare, because they
are lazy?
Is the gap between
the rich and the poor
getting wider?
How can this be the
greatest country in
the world and still
have 12.7% living in
poverty and 7.2% are
unemployed.
Standard of living - between
the poor & rich – healthcare
