HOW DO YOU IMAGINE SOCIAL INTERACTION
WITHIN TEN YEARS, TAKING INTO
CONSIDERATION THE IMPACT OF
TECHONLOGY ON HUMAN RELATIONS?
Álvaro Rumeu
2
• New Technologies have helped us move from the
Industrial Society to the Information Society, which have
led us to building new horizons:
– Access to large quantities of information or news within
seconds, 24/7.
– Communication all over the world no matter the distance
between communicators.
– Creation of links between people from different cultures based
on common interests.
– Medical breakthroughs.
– Improved lifestyle.
3
• But at the same time, new technologies have a
negative side based on:
1) Misuse of information/Security.
2) Social interaction.
4
1) MISUSE OF INFORMATION
• Access to huge databases of information, that can be useless or
hazardous.
• Hours of wasted of time on pointless information.
• False information or security breaches.
• Cybercrime.
5
2) SOCIAL INTERACTION
• Impersonal. We are social animals.
• We might lose great moments or great people because of not
being able to leave our devices alone for a moment.
• People projecting an image that is not the real one.
• Self-brand ourselves based on what we see in other people’s
lives.
• We get use to reading ten lines the most, and do not approach
topics thoroughly (news on mobile devices or twitter)
6
ICT will help us brake barriers in all different areas of
our lives, but it could have negative consequences for
our social interactions:
– We might lose sight of the world and be only capable of
communicating through Technologies.
– ICT might lead us to social isolation. While building
communities around the world based on common interests,
we will stop communicating with those that are the closest.
Ten Years from now
7
– Our children will be raised by our devices instead of their
parents. We might stop spending time with them.
– Children will spend more time on an Ipad than playing
football at the park.
– Since communication through this platforms is easily
manipulative, we will self-brand ourselves in a way that is
socially acceptable rather than showing who we really are.
8
We need to be aware of the benefits ICT brings to our lives, but
at the same time we need to be aware of how much harm it could
cause to social behaviour. We should teach our kids from a
young age how to use them, how to learn from them and how to
protect themselves from them if we want to get the most out of it
in the future.
