The Venture: A Social Entrepreneur CompetitionArnobio Morelix
Arnobio Morelix, a social entrepreneur and research analyst at the Kauffman Foundation, takes a look at The Venture. The Venture is a social entrepreneur competition designed to award $1 million total to the winner or winners. The judges are Adrian Grenier of HBO's Entourage and Alexandre Ricard.
The lecture attempts to gather ideas and examples from elsewhere in the world to local examples: Muhamad Yunus of Grameen Bank and Dr. V of Aravind Hospital from India. They were able to build large and effective organizations serving millions and the poor, while not maximizing profits. In the Philippines, Ateneos Dr. Lavina is a pioneer in social entrepreneurship, an Ashoka fellow and has inspired a lot of young people do such great projects as Rags to Riches, Hapinoy. Then there is the world renowned Illac Diaz.
Even the great thinker on competitiveness, Prof Michael Porter,,,writes under the CSV concept that values must be shared by the business and the community where the business is situated.
Apart from pride and the feeling of membership, the factor that best describes internal experience with brand today, and determines employees’ satisfaction with the company is the capacity to feel one’s social role, contribution to the social value, active participation in the company’s commitment with the society.

Successful high-impact corporate philanthropy programs generate numerous positive, measurable results for both businesses and society. Thomas Knowlton, partner and director of the corporate practice at TCC Group, and Erica Weinberg, senior consultant at TCC Group, shared a new framework for thinking about how to assess, develop, and execute successful high-impact programs. They addressed common barriers to building these high-impact programs and focus the discussion on several key elements that TCC Group has identified as critical to distinguishing leading corporate citizens from their peers. This event was hosted by San Diego Grantmakers.

In October 2005, Franck Riboud, Danone CEO, and Muhammad
Yunus decided to create a « social business model » in
Bangladesh. This company, Grameen Danone, aims at maximizing
social value – nutrition to the poor and poverty alleviation – while
being profitable enough to be sustainable.
• In 2007, danone.communities SICAV (mutual fund open to the public) was set up to finance social
businesses. The SICAV has raised 70M€ of which max10% maximum can be devoted to social
businesses.
• danone.communities projects benefit from extensive support from Danone competencies : R&D,
quality, marketing, supply.
• danone.communities is supporting 10 projects
– in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Senegal, India, China, Mexico and in France
– in 3 clusters: Kids Nutrition; Safe drinking water; Developed countries
• Since mid 2011, danone.communities has renewed its financial tool and is focusing on strengthening
its projects and preparing their replication
