BPEL is the de-facto standard for modeling executable Web services orchestrations. The XML-based language is used for the definition and execution of business processes, as well as scientific workflows using Web services. WSO2 Business Process Server (WSO2 BPS) and Apache Orchestration Director Engine (ODE) are two WS-BPEL-compliant business process executable workflow engines that support the composition of Web services by orchestrating service interactions. This tutorial will explore advanced concepts in WS-BPEL 2.0 and extensibility in WSO2 BPS, including: * Fault handling * Compensation handling * Selective, multiple, and concurrent event processing * Message correlation * Parallel processing * An introduction to ODE extensions * Future improvements with the extensions

This session introduces SOA and the new Oracle SOA Suite 11g to the realm of database professionals from which it sometimes seems so far removed. What are the key SOA concepts and objectives? What is at the heart of Oracle SOA Suite 11g: composite applications, BPEL PM, and the mediator. The session shows how SOA services can be leveraged from the database, from triggers, PL/SQL units, or even SQL and how the database can publish events to the event delivery network. It covers how the SOA infrastructure can access the database, primarily using Oracle Database and Oracle Advanced Queueing adapter and how database developers can help in doing so efficiently. It ends with hints for applying SOA concepts to "normal" database development.

This lecture elaborates on RDF, RDFS, and SOAP starting from a short recap of XML, and the history of the W3C and the development of "open standard recommendations". We also compare RDF triples with DOGMA lexons. We finalise by listing shortcomings of RDFS regarding semantics, and give short overview of the history of OWL as one answer to this. A full elaboration on OWL and description logic is for another lecture.

Overview of web services, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI. A web service provides a defined set of functionality on a machine-processable interface. The web service interface is described in a formal language like WSDL that allows creating code to access the service thus simplifying web service consumer (client) and provider (server) development. In big web services, the interface is typically described in WSDL while the access to the service makes use of the SOAP message protocol. SOAP has its roots in remote object access but is now a general message based and asynchronous transport mechanism. SOAP is typically carried in HTTP (HyperText Transmission Protocol), but other message based protocols like SMTP (Email) or plain TCP could be used as well. WSDL provides a formalized description of an interface that is coarsely separated in an abstract service interface definition containing operations and data types, a transport binding that describes how the web service is accessed and finally a description of the location (address) under which a web service is accessible. UDDI (Universal Description and Discovery Protocol) was meant to become the standard protocol for some kind of a public yellow pages where publicly accessible web services would be listed. Lack of industry interest, however, prevented UDDI to gain widespread use.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) removed the gap between software and business. Today, there is a business transformation among enterprises and they adopt a service based information technology (IT) model. So, testing is necessary for SOA based applications. This paper investigates different type of approaches and techniques that address the testing problems of SOA based services. Here we also investigate the differences between SOA and web services and traditional testing and SOA testing. Various testing levels are also discussed in detail. This paper also expresses various testing perspectives, challenges of SOA testing and review the many testing approaches and identify the problems that improve the testability of SOA based services.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

At its core, the challenge of managing Human Resources data is an integration challenge: estimates range from 2-3 HR systems in use at a typical SMB, up to a few dozen systems implemented amongst enterprise HR departments, and these systems seldom integrate seamlessly between themselves. Providing a multi-tenant, cloud-native solution to integrate these hundreds of HR-related systems, normalize their disparate data models and then render that consolidated information for stakeholder decision making has been a substantial undertaking, but one significantly eased by leveraging Ballerina.
