Celecoxib, branded as Celebrex, is a prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug approved in 1998 to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and acute pain. It works by reducing COX-2 enzymes to decrease inflammation-causing prostaglandins. Long term use may increase risks of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Celebrex is legally prescribed but doctors warned of heart risks in 2005 and addiction requires treatment with a medical program combining medication with therapy and exercise.
