This article discusses the importance of developing physician and surgical leaders and questions how well medical schools and residency programs currently prepare students and residents for leadership roles. It defines leaders as those who can influence others for the benefit of patients and patient populations. The author argues that leadership training should focus on how to effectively influence others and ensure that all healthcare team members, including environmental and sterile processing staff, feel valued. Medical education that omits discussion of these issues unintentionally signals they are unimportant.
