These days any professional, teenager or even child can be seen
toting around a smartphone. We use them everyday to make
calls, text, play games, send email, snap photos and so much
more. But as technology develops and the market gets even more
competitive, how can we know whose technology is better? And
who is gaining the most market share? Or even who gets the
most media attention?
We took a dive into our media intelligence platform, specifically
our Discovery tool, to see which brands have been mentioned the
most in the media in the past year. Our Discovery tool allows us to
search over 3 petabytes of data dating back to 2010 to see media
mentions of any keyword in TV, online news, social media,

3. Apple has taken the world by storm. The iPhone was first introduced in
2007 and runs off Apple’s own iOS mobile operating system. According
to their Wikipedia page, as of March 2014, over 500 million devices
have been sold. !

Since August 2013, Apple has been mentioned over 8 million times.
Combine that with iPhone, and you get over 14 million mentions.

over 55,000, occurred on September 10, 2013
ahead of the release of the iPhone 5S and 5C,
the latest versions of the phone to date.

4. Samsung
The Galaxy S5 was released in
February of 2014 and you can see the
upward trend of media mentions in our
chart below.
The next popular brand of smartphone is Samsung. Currently,
Samsung is the largest manufacturer of devices running Google’s
operating system, Android, consuming 46% of the market share. (Wiki)!

Since August 2013, Samsung has been mentioned in the media over 3
million times. When you combine that with a search of their most
popular phone and the current version, the Galaxy S5, you receive
close to 4 million results.

5. Nokia was one of the first companies to develop a cell phone and became
increasingly popular in the 2000’s. We certainly remember the days of playing
the game Snake on our Nokia 6000 series phones. !

Today the game has changed for Nokia. After losing market share when the
iPhone was introduced, they had to come up with a new strategy. Nokia joined
forces with Microsoft in 2011 to create the first Windows phone. When those
plans struggled, Microsoft agreed to acquire Nokia’s mobile device business in
2013. At the end of Q4 of 2013, Microsoft had sold over 8.2 million Nokia

Since August 2013, Nokia has received over a
million media mentions. When you combine that
with Windows phone and Nokia Lumia, you receive
over 2 million records. Nokia received the most
mentions in one day with over 22,000 back in
September of 2013 when the announcement broke
that Microsoft was acquiring their mobile division.

6. HTC is credited with designing some of the world’s first touch and hand-
held wireless devices in 1998. They are also credited with creating the first
Android smartphone, 3G smartphone and 4G smartphone. Anyone

Today, HTC’s most popular phone is the HTC One, which was released in
March 2013. Over the last year, HTC has received over 700,000 mentions
and when combined with their flagship smartphone, HTC One, the hits total
over a million.

The biggest spike in mentions with over
7,000 came in March of this year when
they announced the release of their
latest version of HTC One, the M8.

7. Similar to our example with Samsung, the
noticeable spikes are when they announced new
products or features. The highest peak was in
August 2013 when Xperia Z2’s predecessor was
announced, the Z1, with over 3,200 mentions.
Sony and Ericsson combined forces in 2001 and they are credited with
introducing cameras on mobile phones. The thing that has affected Sony
Ericsson’s position in the mobile device market the most is that they cannot
create an operating system that can compete with Apple’s iOS and
Google’s Android. Today, their flagship product, the Sony Xperia Z2 is

Since August 2013, Sony Ericsson has only been mentioned about 59,000
times. When you combine it with their flagship smartphone, the Xperia, they
receive over 280,000 mentions.

8. Blackberry’s devices are widely popular with the business and government
markets but have struggled to gain traction with the consumer market due
to the power of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android brands. !

Since August 2013, Blackberry has been mentioned over 1.1 million times.
But the mentions are probably due more to their struggle than their market
share gains. The highest spike of mentions occurred in September of 2013,
at over 14,000 mentions, when they announced they were reducing their

9. LG has played a big role in the consumer electronics industry. Anyone
remember the LG Chocolate? Launched in 2005, the LG Chocolate
was a big hit amongst consumers especially teenagers and college
students. !

Today, LG is the third-largest mobile phone maker by unit sales. Since
August 2013, LG has been mentioned in the media over a million
times. When you combine those mentions with the mentions of their
LG G3, their most popular smartphone, we receive almost 1.2 million

The biggest spike occurred in January of this
year, with over 8,000 mentions, when they
announced at the Consumer Electronics
Show that they would be releasing the G2 to
the US market across several major carriers.

10. Based upon our data, it is clear that Apple still dominates the
market with Samsung coming in at a close second. With the
launch of the iPhone 6 later this year and the Galaxy S5 just
released with talks of S6 launching during Mobile World
Congress 2015, the mobile smartphone industry will continue
to grow at a rapid pace.
