Specific
When setting a goal
it is important to be specific.
While you may not know exactly where you will be in 3,
5, or 10 years, it is important to set specific goals for
today that grow the skills needed to accomplish your
future goals.
A specific goal is the foundation of SMARTER goals.

Measurable
When setting a goal
make sure it is measurable.
When is a goal successful? Is it only when you achieve
your desired outcome, or is it the steps that you take to
get there? Without a measurable goal it is harder to
celebrate the success you have had to get there.
A measurable goal allows you to track where you are and
where you are going.

Attainable
When setting a goal
make sure it is attainable
What steps must you take to accomplish your goal? A
goal that is 5 years out is attainable but will require a step
by step approach to achieving. Do not look only at the
end goal, but all the step by step goals that will get you
there.
An attainable goal helps to keep you motivated while
working toward your long term objectives.

Relevant
When setting a goal
make sure it is relevant.
When setting a goal, make sure it is relevant to where
you see yourself in the future, whether that is in 20
minutes or 20 years. Goals that are not relevant to your
growth and development are hard to stay passionate
about and hard to accomplish.
Do not set a goal to set a goal; set a goal that is going to
help you grow.

Time-Based
When setting a goal
make sure there is a time table.
How can you be successful if you set a goal but give
yourself no deadlines? How can you push yourself to
accomplish your goal with no set time? The timeframe
must be realistic to the amount of effort you are willing
to put in.
It is okay to adjust the time as you learn from your
progress, but you must set a time frame that makes
sense for you and your goal.

Encouraged
When setting a goal
make sure to stay encouraged.
You will both succeed and fail at the goals you set, which
is okay. It is important to stay encouraged in the progress
you have toward your goal.
When you feel the most challenged, look at the success
you have had to get to the step you are on toward your
end goal.

Reevaluate Regularly
When setting a goal
make sure to reevaluate regularly.
Regularly reevaluate your goal. Make sure to set time
aside to look at the accomplishments you have made and
where you stand in the overall progress toward your goal.
Reevaluate and adjust based on your progress will
promote success. Plan A rarely works, we learn from the
work we do to achieve our goals, and that learning can
drive changes into what our end goal is.
