SMART Principles to Define Your Learning Objectives
The SMART principles are a way of framing objectives into a statement of
anticipated results that was adapted from the business literature. Objectives
that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, & Time-bound are clear
to learners and can be translated into outcomes.

Exercise: Consider a scenario from your clinical practice arena. Outline the
likely contributing factors in relation to Safety, Performance, Knowledge, and
Communication. Develop a learning objective for a simulation scenario using
the SMART template. Examples could include: adverse events, morbidity &
mortality reviews, service redesign, ergonomic/environmental redesign, or
patient complaints.

Draft Simulation Learning Objective:
Specific
What goal do I want to achieve?
What goal do I want the
participants to achieve?
Is simulation the appropriate
teaching modality to achieve
these goals?
Measurable
How will I know the goal has
been achieved?
Could I show that the goal has
been achieved to someone who
was not present at the
simulation?
Achievable
Logistically, can the goal be
achieved?
Relevant
Do the participants have the pre-
requisite theoretical knowledge
to achieve the goal?
Does the goal align with the
overarching needs of the
department/patient/learner?
Can the cognitive fidelity needed
to achieve the goal be realized?
Time-bound
How long will it take to achieve
this goal?
How long should the scenario
run before its goals need to be
re-evaluated?
