Smart Growth aims to make cities more dense and livable through controlling outward growth, revitalizing inner cities, and innovations in urban design and transportation. Studies show over 50% of adults support elements of Smart Growth like traditional developments. Portland exemplifies Smart Growth through infill projects and increasing density and land use mixing over time, which residents strongly support. In contrast, Charlotte decreased density and mixing without urban containment, and more diverse land use lowered neighborhood satisfaction there. Simply increasing density does not always benefit quality of life, which depends on matching amenities between high and low density areas to suit local culture.
