This document outlines a morning routine lesson plan for preschool through 2nd grade students that utilizes a SMART Board. The routine includes taking attendance, working on the calendar, and reporting the daily weather. It is designed to be a simple way to start the day and get students engaged. The lesson can be adapted to different ages and abilities by adjusting the level of teacher assistance and allowing students to participate in ways that work for them. It follows Universal Design for Learning guidelines to be inclusive for all students.

6. Attendance
× Start by finding out who came to school today
and move their names to the correct location.
They can do this by themselves or with teacher
assistance to figure out which one their name is.
Then count up each column and write the
number of kids. Again, depending on their age
and abilities, they can do this with or without
teacher assistance in counting and writing
numerals.

the calendar to figure out
different ways to write the
date, review the
day/month/year through song
and visuals. This includes
learning the order of the days of
the week and months of the
year. Additionally, students can
be asked to count up to what
day it is

× Each day, the children will be
given a chance to observe the
weather from the window and
report back what they see for
each day of the week.

be kept for each month to
compare how many
rainy/sunny/cloudy/snowy

There are additional interactive
plans in this lesson, but to keep
morning routine simple and easy,
it is best to start with these basic
three and add on as you go. The
lesson can be slightly altered to
accommodate many ages and
abilities of learners by using the
teacher for more or less
assistance and guidance, and by
giving each student a choice in
how they would like to interact
with the lesson (verbally,
physically, etc.)

10. UDL Guidelines
Furthermore, this lesson follows UDL
guidelines. There are multiple means
representation to give learners various ways of
acquiring information and knowledge. There
are multiple means of expression to provide
learners alternatives for demonstrating what
they know. Finally, there are multiple means of
engagement to tap into learners' interests,
offer appropriate challenges, and increase
motivation. Like I said earlier, it can be adapted
for more or less complex tasks (like putting
your name in the school column versus finding
your own name without help)
