A subject that is at the core of nearly every conversation I have, my goal was to simply show others how I frame sustainability, and then how I take the steps I do. I tend to look past the environmental and investment focuses that have come to define sustainability towards systems and program, and it was through this lens that I really looked to focus the 30 or so who were in attendance.
As it is through this lens that I have developed my own platforms and solutions in China.

Task Force On Sustainable Lifestyles PresentationTom Gater
Lifestyles are part of our identity; people express their social position, political preferences and psychological aspirations to others through them. Lifestyles define and differentiate us. They are the way we live our lives.
Lifestyles are shaped by a whole host of factors. Their roots are in culture, politics, economics and social norms. For sustainable lifestyles to enter our cultures and societies, to become part of our everyday life, they must be developed at all levels. They need to be enabled and encouraged by the social and technical systems and institutions that surround us. People will only swap their car for public transport if there’s an efficient and cost-effective public transport system.
The beginning of Earth Day dates back in 1968 when the Human Ecology Symposium was held. With the
U.S. Public Health Service, Morton Hilbert organized an environmental conference for students where they
could learn more from scientists about the effects of environmental degradation on human health. For the
next two years, Hilbert and the students worked to plan the first Earth Day. In April 1970, along with a federal
proclamation from the U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the first Earth Day was officially held. This day impelled
the U.S. Congress to develop some of the most significant environmental legislation.
