Mason Wartman, the owner of the Philadelphia pizza parlor, is gains national attention for his unique business model of giving back. Customers at Rosa’s can choose to buy a slice for a homeless person for just another dollar. Yes just $1. After donating the dollar, customers can choose to write a heartfelt message on the sticky note, and add it to the parlors wall.

When it was time to pay the $4.31 fare, the passenger left an astounding $989.98 tip. Maiga was stunned by the massive donation. Maiga continuously asked the patron if they had made a mistake and the patron replied “I meant to give you that much”.

This fast food owner believes in service with a side of selflessness. A man with his possessions strapped to his back entered a Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama, and approached owner-operator Mark Meadows. The homeless man walked up to Meadows and asked “if there was anything he could do to earn a little food".
Meadows were concerned for the man, who had just come from the freezing temperatures outside, and wanted to make sure he stayed warm. So the owner decided to give him a free meal and also handed over his own pair of gloves. The moving moment was captured by a customer who witnessed the interaction and shared the photo on Chick-Fil-A's Facebook page.

A downstate judge ordered $1.4 million in damages in a hate crimes lawsuit involving the vicious attack of three young black men by a group of white men in Manteno, Illinois in 2005. The Chicago Lawyers' Committee and Katten Muchin Rosenman law firm represented the victims in the civil suit. The judge awarded $240,000 in compensatory damages and $1.2 million in punitive damages. Two of the defendants had previously settled out of court. The four remaining defendants were each found liable for $480,000. The large judgment aimed to condemn the racially motivated violence and validate the victims' suffering.

Scenario
Due to a budget cut in defense spending, the federal government messed up all military housing forcing
people in the state of Washington and elsewhere to quarter troops in their own private homes. To raise
money for military housing, the state of Washington is suing gun makers for $300 million dollars for
costs incurred for law enforcement and other gun-related costs. The state courts denied the gun
makers a jury trial, which they requested.
At the same time, a political science teacher from the area spoke out against both measures. The first
time he spoke out was at a public hearing. The second time was in a letter to the editor published in a
local paper. After the letter was published and after the public hearing, government officials who read
and heard the professor’s oratory were outraged. Both federal and state legislatures enacted a set of
laws precisely against this professor speaking out. One of the laws stated that newspapers were not
allowed to publish letters or editorials unfavorable to certain government positions and actions because,
they said, these letters and speeches were meant to incite violence, and threatened the public good. Yet
this professor at no time advocated violence or dissension. His speech was based on the fact that he did
not like having to quarter troops in his home nor should the state go after gun makers and deny them a
jury trial.
Another new law was passed that forbade the professor from having a gun in his home, even though he
possessed all the legal documentation for the weapon and it threatened no one. The professor’s home
was searched by police on several different occasions and a tap was placed on his phone and hacked
into his email. The professor was arrested and detained, without authorization by the district attorney
or magistrate and without being told of the charges. Nor was the professor informed of his
constitutional rights, and when ask to be represented by an attorney he was denied this right, even
when he would offer to provide his own representation, he was still denied. The Professor was
rigorously and intensely interrogated questioned by police for hundred and ninety-six hours straight.
During this intense interrogation, he denied food, water, sleep and any legal representation. The
Professor claims during the questioning they (the state) used intensive physical pressure and forced him
to sign blank confession form. He was held in jail for over 18 months without bail. Eventually bail was
set for $250 million dollars. All the of the professor’s assets were seized by the government. Once the
professor came to trial, the jury consisted solely of students that had failed his classes and ex-girlfriends.

WASHINGTON -- A year of recalls and lead scares in the toy industry is spurring Congress toward the largest overhaul in decades of the nation's product safety watchdog.
Lawmakers from both parties are pushing to increase the budget and power of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, motivated by consumer unrest over millions of recalled children's products and revelations by the Chicago Tribune of the agency's slow response to reports of deadly cribs and toy magnets.
House and Senate leaders say the question isn't whether Congress will send President Bush a product safety bill; it's how far the changes will go.
The House unanimously passed a bill in December that tightens lead standards, mandates new toy safety testing and boosts the CPSC's annual budget to $100 million by 2011, an increase of more than 50 percent from 2007. The Senate is mulling a farther-reaching measure that would vastly increase toymakers' lawsuit liability and stop them from blocking the public release of safety information.
Whatever negotiators hammer out figures to pass overwhelmingly, leaders in both parties say, and would trigger the most comprehensive changes at the CPSC since the Reagan administration dramatically scaled back the agency in the 1980s.
Bush already has signed a bill that includes a $17 million funding increase for the agency in 2008, directed in part to bolstering efforts to monitor Chinese-made toys for lead and other hazards.
A number of lawmakers have pushed CPSC reforms for years without success. Their efforts gained steam in May when the Chicago Tribune detailed how the agency fumbled a recall of Magnetix, construction toys that contained dangerously powerful magnets. The agency didn't effectively get the product off store shelves until after a child died and dozens of others were injured.
The legislative push also reflects concern over a wave of lead-tainted toys that became the latest in a series of Chinese-made products -- from deadly pet food to food intended for people -- sending shivers through American consumers.
The lead-related recall in June of 1.5 million Thomas & Friends railway toys shook the toy industry. By year's end, the CPSC had announced 107 lead recalls for almost 17 million pieces of toys, jewelry, clothing and other items -- as many recalls in a single year as the agency had announced in its entire three-decade history.

Seven teachers at the McMartin Preschool in Manhattan Beach, California are indicted by the Los Angeles County grand jury after hearing testimony from 18 children. Included among the charged are Peggy McMartin Buckey, the head of the school and her son Ray Buckey. Seven years and millions of dollars later, the case against the teachers came to a close with no reputable evidence of wrongdoing and no convictions.
The McMartin school debacle began on August 12, 1983 when Judy Johnson reported to the police that she believed her 2-1/2-year-old son had been molested at the McMartin Preschool. The first major blunder occurred less than a month into the investigation. On September 8, the Manhattan Beach Police Department sent out a form letter to more than 200 families, alerting them of an investigation into the allegations of child molestation and naming Ray Buckey as a suspect.
The latter set off a wave of hysteria in the community. Compounding the problem, virtually every child who attended the school was sent to the Children's Institute International, an organization that claimed it could get children to reveal abuse even when they didn't want to talk about it. Unfortunately, CII was also capable of getting easily manipulated children to reveal abuse when it had never actually happened.
The allegations that CII produced grew more bizarre every day. They reported that they had been taken to a cemetery where dead bodies were dug and hacked to pieces (causing blood to spurt out). The local Catholic Church invited an expert on scults to talk to the congregation in the wake of the allegations. Of course, there wasn't any corroboration of these wild allegations from any witnesses although the school often had visitors and guests. The truth or falsity of the allegations mattered little to the community at large. The McMartin School was burned down in an arson attack and seven other local preschools closed down as people who worked with children began to fear that they would be the next accused.
Unfortunately for other child care workers around the nation, the abuse scare of the early 1990s found many victims. More recent research has demonstrated that questioning techniques of children can easily be manipulated so that the child will give the answer that the questioner desires.

Scenario
Due to a budget cut in defense spending, the federal government messed up all military housing forcing
people in the state of Washington and elsewhere to quarter troops in their own private homes. To raise
money for military housing, the state of Washington is suing gun makers for $300 million dollars for
costs incurred for law enforcement and other gun-related costs. The state courts denied the gun
makers a jury trial, which they requested.
At the same time, a political science teacher from the area spoke out against both measures. The first
time he spoke out was at a public hearing. The second time was in a letter to the editor published in a
local paper. After the letter was published and after the public hearing, government officials who read
and heard the professor’s oratory were outraged. Both federal and state legislatures enacted a set of
laws precisely against this professor speaking out. One of the laws stated that newspapers were not
allowed to publish letters or editorials unfavorable to certain government positions and actions because,
they said, these letters and speeches were meant to incite violence, and threatened the public good. Yet
this professor at no time advocated violence or dissension. His speech was based on the fact that he did
not like having to quarter troops in his home nor should the state go after gun makers and deny them a
jury trial.
Another new law was passed that forbade the professor from having a gun in his home, even though he
possessed all the legal documentation for the weapon and it threatened no one. The professor’s home
was searched by police on several different occasions and a tap was placed on his phone and hacked
into his email. The professor was arrested and detained, without authorization by the district attorney
or magistrate and without being told of the charges. Nor was the professor informed of his
constitutional rights, and when ask to be represented by an attorney he was denied this right, even
when he would offer to provide his own representation, he was still denied. The Professor was
rigorously and intensely interrogated questioned by police for hundred and ninety-six hours straight.
During this intense interrogation, he denied food, water, sleep and any legal representation. The
Professor claims during the questioning they (the state) used intensive physical pressure and forced him
to sign blank confession form. He was held in jail for over 18 months without bail. Eventually bail was
set for $250 million dollars. All the of the professor’s assets were seized by the government. Once the
professor came to trial, the jury consisted solely of students that had failed his classes and ex-girlfriends.

WASHINGTON -- A year of recalls and lead scares in the toy industry is spurring Congress toward the largest overhaul in decades of the nation's product safety watchdog.
Lawmakers from both parties are pushing to increase the budget and power of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, motivated by consumer unrest over millions of recalled children's products and revelations by the Chicago Tribune of the agency's slow response to reports of deadly cribs and toy magnets.
House and Senate leaders say the question isn't whether Congress will send President Bush a product safety bill; it's how far the changes will go.
The House unanimously passed a bill in December that tightens lead standards, mandates new toy safety testing and boosts the CPSC's annual budget to $100 million by 2011, an increase of more than 50 percent from 2007. The Senate is mulling a farther-reaching measure that would vastly increase toymakers' lawsuit liability and stop them from blocking the public release of safety information.
Whatever negotiators hammer out figures to pass overwhelmingly, leaders in both parties say, and would trigger the most comprehensive changes at the CPSC since the Reagan administration dramatically scaled back the agency in the 1980s.
Bush already has signed a bill that includes a $17 million funding increase for the agency in 2008, directed in part to bolstering efforts to monitor Chinese-made toys for lead and other hazards.
A number of lawmakers have pushed CPSC reforms for years without success. Their efforts gained steam in May when the Chicago Tribune detailed how the agency fumbled a recall of Magnetix, construction toys that contained dangerously powerful magnets. The agency didn't effectively get the product off store shelves until after a child died and dozens of others were injured.
The legislative push also reflects concern over a wave of lead-tainted toys that became the latest in a series of Chinese-made products -- from deadly pet food to food intended for people -- sending shivers through American consumers.
The lead-related recall in June of 1.5 million Thomas & Friends railway toys shook the toy industry. By year's end, the CPSC had announced 107 lead recalls for almost 17 million pieces of toys, jewelry, clothing and other items -- as many recalls in a single year as the agency had announced in its entire three-decade history.

There are five basic transportation modes: rail, inland water ways, ocean, over-the-road, and air. We will not be concerned about air transport in this SLP as it is the least used and most expensive in general supply chain transportation.
Review and read these resources on these three transportation modes: rail, inland water, and OTR. Ocean is not included in these readings since it is mainly used for importing and exporting. This will be covered in more detail in LOG502. But you are asked to identify where ocean transport is used, but not in detail.

Steve could be charged with attempted murder. He was stabbing Michelle in the chest repeatedly. Due to the details of the scenario his charge could only be attempted because Michelle got up from the attack and charged Stacy. If she later died from her injuries Steve would/could be charged with murder. Even though he was “visibly drunk” he still maintained the purposely, knowing, or reckless intent to cause harm. He was coherent enough to make statements to her about how much he loved her, but still showed an extreme indifference to life and intent cause serious bodily harm. The biggest obstacle to a murder charge for Steve is his death. He cannot be charged with anything if he cannot be alive to defend himself. This takes care of the Steve factor.
Initially Stacy could be found guilty of murder. She knowingly and intentionally took the life of another (Steve). She also expresses an intent to kill when she stated, “I have had enough of you Steve”. From the scenario it is documented that she did not care for Steve and along with her statements, it can be shown that she was “just waiting for the opportunity” to kill Steve. In her favor is the fact that she attempted to stop Steve from harming another person. Her actions, while resulting in the death of another, were in the defense of a harmed person. She possibly saved the life of Michelle by using reasonable force to stop the stabbing.
Michelle could be charged with attempted murder as well. She stabbed Stacey in the chest while screaming, “how dare you”. She intended to cause death or serious physical injury. Again, if Stacey died from the wounds suffered, Michelle could/would be charged with murder. It could also be argued that Michelle had no malice aforethought. She was being stabbed and may not have known her actions were wrong. Her extreme circumstance clouded her reasonable decision making and all she was aware of is that her boyfriend, whom she loved, was just killed. This is unlikely but still a small possibility. Without more facts from the scenario it is difficult to fully play out all possibilities.

Poking fun at meetings is the stuff of Dilbert car-
toons—we can all joke about how soul-sucking and
painful they are. But that pain has real consequences
for teams and organizations. In our interviews with
hundreds of executives, in fields ranging from high
tech and retail to pharmaceuticals and consulting,
many said they felt overwhelmed by their meetings—
whether formal or informal, traditional or agile, face-
to-face or electronically mediated. One said, “I cannot
get my head above water to breathe during the week.”
Another described stabbing her leg with a pencil to
stop from screaming during a particularly torturous
staff meeting. Such complaints are supported by re-
search showing that meetings have increased in length
and frequency over the past 50 years, to the point
where executives spend an average of nearly 23 hours
a week in them, up from less than 10 hours in the
1960s. And that doesn’t even include all the impromptu
gatherings that don’t make it onto the schedule.
Much has been written about this problem, but the
solutions posed are usually discrete: Establish a clear
agenda, hold your meeting standing up, delegate
someone to attend in your place, and so on. We’ve
observed in our research and consulting that real im-
provement requires systemic change, because meet-
ings affect how people collaborate and how they get
their own work done.
Yet change of such scope is rarely considered. When
we probed into why people put up with the strain that
meetings place on their time and sanity, we found
something surprising: Those who resent and dread
meetings the most also defend them as a “necessary
evil”—sometimes with great passion. Consider this
excerpt from the corporate blog of a senior executive
in the pharmaceutical industry:
I believe that our abundance of meetings at our
company is the Cultural Tax we pay for the inclusive,
learning environment that we want to foster…
and I’m ok with that. If the alternative to more
meetings is more autocratic decision-making, less
input from all levels throughout the organization,
and fewer opportunities to ensure alignment and
communication by personal interaction, then give
me more meetings any time!
To be sure, meetings are essential for enabling col-
laboration, creativity, and innovation. They often foster
relationships and ensure proper information exchange.
They provide real benefits. But why would anyone ar-
gue in defense of excessive meetings, especially when
no one likes them much?

The reaction is actually taking place between the hydrogen ion (H+) and the hydroxide ion (OH−). The chloride and sodium are spectator ions. To write the reaction in the same form as eq #1:

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) will dissociate in water to form sodium ion (Na+) and bicarbonate ion (HCO3−).
NaHCO3 --> Na+ + HCO3− (eq #4)
Vinegar is usually a 5% solution of acetic acid in water. The bicarbonate anion (HCO3−) can act as a base, accepting a hydrogen ion from the acetic acid (HC2H3O2) in the vinegar. The Na+ is just a spectator ion and does nothing.

The carbonic acid that is formed (H2CO3) decomposes to form water and carbon dioxide:

You may want to follow the guidelines below for the final report of your Stock-Trak portfolio performance during the quarter. Your report is not expected to exceed four pages excluding any tables and appendices.
1. On the first page, replicate the investment policy statement (IPS) including your asset allocation that you submitted to the instructor.
2. Explain the funds allocation among different assets that you actually choose in your Stock-Trak portfolio. If your actual asset allocation is different from the allocation in your policy statement, explain the rationale for changing your asset allocations. Here you may think of strategic asset allocation and tactical asset allocation strategies that we discussed in chapter 16.
3. Provide your rationale for selecting the particular securities such as stock, mutual funds, ETFs, bonds, bond funds, real estate funds, etc. for your Stock-Trak portfolio. That is, explain why you considered these securities to be the most suitable in meeting your return-risk goals and asset allocations in the investment policy statement. You may use the portfolio investment philosophies and strategies from chapter 16 such as passive strategies, indexing, top-down approach, style-based strategies, asset attributes-based strategies, and technical analysis in your explanation (see chapter 16 and Exhibit 16.6).
4. Compare the performance of your portfolio relative to a relevant benchmark you stated in your policy statement. If you did not list a benchmark in your IPS, you may use a broader well-known benchmark such as S&P 500 or NADAQ composite, or create and use a hybrid benchmark of stock and bond markets (weighted average of the returns of a stock market index and bond market index).
5. Describe what worked and what did not work in your Stok-Trak portfolio? Explain what mistakes you made and what lessons did you learn from the Stock-Trak portfolio simulation? If you would have to redo this portfolio investment with your actual money or money from your investment clients, what you would do differently in managing such real money portfolios?
