1. Roger Candy - Experience and Skills
Experience
At Northumbria University I focused on:
Enterprise activity as part of Northumbria University’s Corporate Strategy which
produces measurable outcomes in skills development, business creation and
business support.
Supporting the realisation of enterprise based innovation in academic schools
through establishing and nurturing networks of joint action. I have also developed
innovation networks with private and public sector partners of the University
throughout the region.
Working with academic staff and with outside partners, we have increased the
volume of activity in this area of business development so that it matches the level of
activity appropriate for a university of the size of Northumbria:
Across the university, just over 4,000 student learning experiences in enterprise were
delivered in the academic year 2013/2014. In 2014/2015 the figure will have
exceeded 4,300 student learning experiences >30 hours study.
The equivalent learner numbers in 2003/2004, when what is now the present system
began, was about 45.
All learning experiences are part of assessed curriculum. They are all subject to QA
and evaluation processes.
Planning and delivering research, consultancy and accredited and non-accredited
training.
Planning, managing and implementing a number of HEIF and other nationally and
regionally funded projects liaising with Schools and outside organisations where
appropriate to maximise synergy in target effectiveness and resource efficiency.
Initiating and managing responses to local, national and international funding
opportunities on behalf of the University and its regional partner network. New
sources and kinds of research and consultancy income have been generated around
knowledge based enterprise support.
Managing the movement of projects between funding bases to ensure long term
sustainability of initiatives. Generation of multi-source resourcing of projects to
expand the impact of funded activity.
Developing an enterprise and innovation culture amongst staff, learners and outside
partner organisations.
Skills:
Experience
I have experience both in teaching and educational development and in academic
business interface activities.
2. In particular I have concerned myself with working in client relationship building on
behalf of Higher Education. This has most recently been both with academic teams
and with regional development agencies and local authorities.
I was responsible for setting up the Enterprise Curriculum and Start Up Support
Strategy for Northumbria University. This involved development, negotiation, funding
and delivery of enterprise education across the institution.
Knowledge and understanding
I have worked both at a managerial and a delivery level in creating learning
experiences, modules and full academic programmes at a number of levels within
Higher Education. This includes accredited work with learners in the community.
This work builds on a number of years past experience, both in teaching methods
development and in research in these areas.
Skills
My key skills are in strategic organisational development and partnership
development, in both a Higher Education and a regional economic development
context.
