The evidence-based analysis of standing and sitting postures.
In the last year or so, media has been flooded with articles about ill effects of prolonged sitting and the need for standing up when working. There have also been research reports calling sitting as “new smoking” and linking it with everything from risk of cancer, heart disease and “dying 2 years sooner”. How much of this is true? And how much is the hype created by furniture companies and social media? Must everyone have an expensive stand-sit desk? Are there any jobs which are better done sitting down than standing or vice versa? Are there any downsides to standing, too? This talk examines the topic of standing vs sitting at work holistically and objectively. Leveraging on human anatomy, biomechanics and years of empirical research in the field of workspace ergonomics, you will understand the finer nuances of sitting vs standing postures and it’s long term effects on health and productivity. From a practical stand-point, you will also be able to know the various strategies an organization may implement to enable its employees to adopt the right postures and the return-on-investment for the different options.

jam. Due to traffic jam a substantial portion of working hours have to be left on streets which create adverse

Traffic congestion is caused by the high number of vehicles on roads which has increased from 2 million in 2010 to over 16 million currently. This leads to high pollution levels and health problems. Proposed solutions include implementing a one-way street system and odd-even rules to reduce the number of vehicles on roads on a given day.
These are the slides used by George to guide the discussion on autonomous vehicles.

This document discusses the causes of traffic congestion in Dhaka City, Bangladesh. It identifies several key factors contributing to congestion, including a rising population and vehicle growth rate without sufficient expansion of roads. Dhaka has only 7% of its total area dedicated to roads, compared to the recommended 25%. Other causes include inadequate traffic enforcement, dysfunctional traffic lights, unplanned road design, centralized development drawing people into the city, and illegal parking reducing effective road space. Addressing these underlying issues through improved planning, infrastructure expansion, and enforcement of traffic rules could help remedy the severe congestion that plagues Dhaka.
Traffic congestion occurs when demand for road space exceeds supply. It is a major problem in many urban areas, with typical residents spending 10 hours per week driving of which 1-3 hours are in congested conditions. Congestion reduces speeds and increases driver frustration. It has social, environmental, and economic impacts. Countermeasures to reduce congestion include improving road infrastructure, promoting public transit and urban planning practices that reduce traffic, implementing demand management strategies like road pricing, and applying traffic management techniques. However, implementing long-term solutions faces challenges including long time spans, high costs, and lack of regulatory bodies in Pakistan.
The document discusses urban transportation systems and related issues. It defines urbanization and describes how transportation needs change as rural areas become more urban. Common trip purposes in urban areas include commuting to work and school, shopping, and leisure activities. Various modes of transportation are used like private vehicles, public transit, walking and cycling. However, large urban populations also lead to transportation problems such as traffic congestion, accidents, long commutes and loss of public space. Solutions proposed include expanding public transit networks, dedicated lanes for different vehicle types, and promoting non-motorized transportation options to alleviate issues from urban transportation growth.

Health technology for the other 99% (MedicineX Sep 2013)Rajiv Mehta
This document discusses the need for health technology focused on self-care and family caregiving. It notes that for most of our lives, we take care of our own health needs without involvement from healthcare professionals. However, current health technology is overwhelmingly focused on the needs of healthcare providers rather than the 99% of time spent in self-care. The document advocates for more technology to help with the daily health tasks involved in self-care and caregiving for family members. These tasks can be numerous and complex to manage for individuals and their care networks.

The document advocates gaining a deeper understanding of one's own body and energy system through practices like yoga and meditation rather than solely relying on external concepts and information.
