Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Introduction of what we do in the coating lab and what the new infrastructure has to offer
Let’s start with the beginning: the coating!
A coating is a layer or a systems of layers that you can apply to decorate or protect an object.
But recently there are much more possibilities with coatings and you can give your product an added value with different functional coatings.
We have seen a very nice example of a new functional coating developed at Harvard University and with lots of possibilities.
And there are several examples of these materials, that have been developed and commercialised already
The Sirris Smart Coating Application Lab is there to advice you on these coatings and on what coating is the best for your application and your requirements.
The top 3 questions on functional coatings that we get are on
1. easy-to-clean
2. wear/abrasion/scratch resistance
3. and antimicrobial functionality
And that for different sectors:
A bike that becomes mud resistant with a special lotus effect coating on it
A building plate that behaves more scratch resistant when coated and can be used for indoor applications now
A food processing machine or packaging materials with antibacterial and easy-to-clean functionality is the aim in a collective research project that we participate in
There are different types of coating that can accomplish these new functions.
Because of their versatility in functions possible, we have decided to focus within Sirris either on PVD coatings and on what we call “wet-chemical coatings”.
Especially these last coatings are really interesting for industrial applications within SME’s because they can be applied by simple and cost effective methods, comparable to what is used for paints.
The wet chemical coating formulations that are applied are liquid coatings containing organic resins and organic and inorganic additives to provide functionalities.
You also hear the terms sol-gel, hybrid sol-gel, inorganic coatings, organic coatings and nanocoatings because often the coatings contain nanoparticles.
They can be solvent-based or water-based.
They can be cured thermally or by photochemical way
And they can be applied on different substrates and products.
Up to now at Sirris we did research on these coatings, on how to formulate them and demonstrate their functionality and added value at labscale.
Hoever, we notice that many SME’s still do not incorporate these coatings to create added value on their products.
One of the reasons is the lack of a prototyping centre in Belgium. A place where SME’s can go and have prototypes coated to show to their customers.
A place where you can have not only advice on what is the best coating, but also where the coating application can be optimized on your product with up-to-date machinery and expertise
Well, it is that place I want to present to you today.
We are now able not only to help you selecting the best coating, but we can make prototypes, we help you in optimizing the coating deposition and introduce the coating in your production cycle.
