Single Step Linear Equations
How to Find x
© S. D./18
First, Lets make a Problem!
© S. D./18
2𝑥 + 3 = 4𝑥 + 5
To make things easier, lets draw a line.
© S. D./18
2𝑥 + 3 = 4𝑥 + 5
Next, we need to cancel out our x’s!
© S. D./18
2𝑥 + 3 = 4𝑥 + 5
But first we need to figure
out HOW to cancel out the
number
You always move the
SMALLER x to the BIGGER x
This is an x Number This is an x Number
How to cancel out an x
© S. D./18
You have to cancel it out by Subtracting or adding it by itself
+5x -5x
How would you cancel out 5x? -5x?
The opposite of the number
will cancel it out
-5x +5x
OPPOSITES
3 = 2𝑥 + 5
Now, Lets try what you learned!
© S. D./18
2𝑥 + 3 = 4𝑥 + 5
−2𝑥
Now, what you do
to one side you do
to the other,
ALWAYS! −2𝑥
STEP 1
Now, all numbers have to get to the OTHER side
© S. D./18
2𝑥 + 3 = 4𝑥 + 5
−2𝑥 −2𝑥
3 = 2𝑥 + 5
STEP 1 STEP 2
We will do the
same thing we did
with the x’s
When it comes to
numbers,
sometimes
negatives will
happen. They
have to be on the
OPPOSITE side of
the x’s
−5
Now, Do the same
thing to the other
side
−5
−2 = 2𝑥
Now divide x.
© S. D./18
2𝑥 + 3 = 4𝑥 + 5
−2𝑥 −2𝑥
3 = 2𝑥 + 5
STEP 1 STEP 2
−5−5
−2 = 2𝑥
STEP 3
Now we need to divide
the x so it becomes 1x
−1 = 𝑥 Notice how I only wrote
‘x’ and not ‘1x’ when an
x becomes 1x the one
is not needed.
AND FINALLY
𝑥 = −1
Flip around your final answer so it starts with “x=“
