2. Utiliser moins de sacs en plastique
11-15,18-19 July
We felt that plastic bags were way overused and - Use less plastic bags
this problem had to be addressed as it is very
pressing, with all the environmental effects and - Use more envirofriendly bags or
the effects on marine life. So, we felt that we use boxes instead
should try to make a difference, no matter how
small, it is still a difference. - Put up posters in supermarkets
or shops to ask shoppers to bring
This also troubled us because when we go their own bags for a week
shopping with our parents, we realized that
there were many bags used per trip. When you - Make newspaper bags and give
factor in the amount that is used by Singapore them to a shop and ask them to
alone every week, it is already a huge number.
use it for a week
Thus we embarked on this project.
We decided to use the last solution. We made about 150 newspaper bags, and passed them
to the Popular Bookstore in our school, after asking permission of the company by sending them an
email. Also, we set up a Facebook group, where we raised awareness of the cons of using plastic bags
and how we can use less. We also told people around us that newspaper bags were more
environmentally friendly and if they go to the Popular Bookstore in school, they should use them. We
also changed our own thoughts about plastic bags. We used to think that they were very convenient
and cheap, now we realized that they are very harmful to the environment and that we should not use
them freely.
We estimate the number of people affected to be around 250 to 300 people in our school.
