SUBTASKS:
To understand that there are different systems
within the body and that they work independently
and together to form a functioning human body.
1.
CONTENT STANDARD/ OVERVIEW
In this lesson, you will have a view of the body as a system, in which, parts do things for other parts and
for the organism as a whole. In addition, this material focuses on the activities to help you learn that body
systems work together to build the functioning human body. The lessons in this material will teach you
about the respective functions of the system and its parts. Activities are provided after each lesson to
assess your learning.

THE
DISCOVERING…..
Hi there! I am Albert. Are you up to another fun way
of learning Science? If you do, then let us together
discover and explore more about the human body.
In our journey, we will be able to answer these
primary questions:
WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES UP YOUR BODY?
DO THEY WORK TO PERFORM THEIR FUNCTION?
HOW?
To answer these questions, let us start our journey.
That….
Your body is made of tiny living units called cells. The cells are so small
that you cannot see them with your naked eyes. The different cells do
different functions.
A group of cells of the same kind doing the same function makes up the
tissue. Tissues functioning together makes up an organ. The eyes, ears,
nose, skin and tongue are the sense organs. The muscles and bones are
organs. What do you think are the body organs?
DID YOU KNOW???
5 | P a g e
Organs of the body function like a team. Organs working together make up a system.
Your body is made up of several systems. What organs make up each system? What do these organs
do so that the systems can function well? Let us find out in these lessons.
THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Look at the diagram carefully. This diagram shows some of the
major bones in your body. Can you name these bones?
When you talk about the bones that make up the skeletal
system, you are simply talking about the skeleton. SKELETON is
made up of many bones that are joined together to make a
structure.
FUNCTIONS:
 To give your body shape and support.
 It supports your body as you move.
 Some bones protect some vital parts or internal organs
of your body.
SKULL: Protects the brain.
6 | P a g e
Components of Human Skeleton:
Human skeleton is composed of three main components; Bones, Associated
cartilages and Joints.
Bones:
Bone is a tough and rigid form of connective tissue. It is the weight bearing organ
of human body and it is responsible for almost all strength of human skeleton.
Cartilages:
Cartilage is also a form of connective
tissue but is not as tough and rigid as
bone. Bones are highly mineralized
with calcium salts while cartilages are
not.
Joints:
Joints are important components of human skeleton because they make the
human skeleton mobile. A joint occurs between “two or more bones”, “bone and
cartilage” and “cartilage and cartilage”.
THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
You are doing great with your lessons.
But before I forget, the joints are
classified into 3 types. Study below.

Imagine if you did not have any muscle. How would you look? You would look like a human
skeleton. The illustration below shows your MUSCULAR SYSTEM.
Muscles make up the muscular system. Your bone are your support as you move. It is the
muscle attached to the bones that move them. Without the muscles, you cannot do anything.
There are two kinds of muscles. The voluntary and the involuntary muscles.
Voluntary muscles are the ones that you can control. Most of them move your bones
around. If you want to run, walk, ride a bike or wave your arms around, it is your
voluntary muscles which move your arms, legs and body around. But they can't do
that unless your brain sends the right muscles the messages to 'contract' or 'relax'.
Involuntary muscles don't need the brain to send them messages. They know their job
and they keep right on doing it. Example is, the muscles in your heart, which keep
blood pumping round your body.

We need air to live. The gas in the air which we
need to breathe is called oxygen. We could not
live without oxygen. In contrast, carbon dioxide
is a gaseous waste produced in our body. It is
carried by blood to the lungs. There, it is expelled
in our body.
Mmmm. So, Mr.
Albert, how does air
get in our body? How
is air expelled in the
body? What is
responsible for it?
Function of the Respiratory System
The function of the human respiratory system is to transport air into the lungs and to facilitate the diffusion
of Oxygen into the blood stream. It also receives waste Carbon Dioxide from the blood and exhales it.
Parts of the Upper Respiratory Tract
 Mouth, nose & nasal cavity: The function of this part of the
system is to warm, filter and moisten the incoming air
 Pharynx: Here the throat divides into the trachea (wind
pipe) and oesophagus (food pipe). There is also a small flap
of cartilage called the epiglottis which prevents food from
entering the trachea
 Larynx: This is also known as the voice box as it is where
sound is generated. It also helps protect the trachea by
producing a strong cough reflex if any solid objects pass the
epiglottis.
Parts of the Lower Respiratory Tract
 Trachea: Also known as the windpipe this is the tube which
carries air from the throat into the lungs.
 Bronchi: The trachea divides into two tubes called bronchi,
one entering the left and one entering the right lung.
 Bronchioles: Tertiary bronchi continue to divide and
become bronchioles, very narrow tubes, less than 1
millimeter in diameter.
 Alveoli: Individual hollow cavities contained within alveolar
sacs (or ducts). Alveoli have very thin walls which permit
the exchange of gases Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide.
 Diaphragm: The diaphragm is a broad band of muscle
which sits underneath the lungs, attaching to the lower ribs,
sternum and lumbar spine and forming the base of the
thoracic cavity.

You eliminate urine in your body. Why?
How does your body do it? What system of
the body has specialized functions for
urine elimination?
Your urinary System is made up
of the following parts:
 KIDNEYS—are two
bean-shaped organs
that filter blood to
produce liquid waste
called urine.
 URETERS- are tubes
from each kidney that
lead to the bladder.
 BLADDER- is a bag-

How does the circulatory system help us grow,
enjoy and be productive in the world that we live
in? First, let us define first what this system is.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM is the transport system
of the body. The term “cardiovascular” is a
combination of two word; “Cardio” (heart) and
“vascular” (vessels). Its major parts are the heart,
the blood, and the blood vessels (arteries, veins
and capillaries)
COMPONENTS:
HEART: The heart is the key organ in the
circulatory system. As a hollow, muscular pump,
its main function is to propel blood throughout the
body.
BLOOD VESSELS: These are the passageways of
blood. They are found all over the body. It has 3
kinds:
 Arteries-Carry blood away from the heart
 Veins- Carry blood back to the heart
 Capillaries- smallest blood vessels where
exchange of nutrients and waste take place
BLOOD: Blood is a specialized tissue of body that
exists in fluid form. It has 3 kinds:
 Reb Blood Cells- carry oxygen to the body
 White Blood Cells- fight infections and
microorganisms that enter the body
 Platelets- useful in blood clotting to stop
the loss of blood in the body

THE BODY’S CONTROL CENTER
All living things respond to stimuli.
When your hand touches something
hot, you immediately take your
hand away from the hot object.
What body system is responsible for
your reaction?
What is the nervous system?
The nervous system is the highway along which your
brain sends and receives information about what is
happening in the body and around it. This highway is
made up of billions of nerve cells, or neurons which join
together to make nerves.
 BRAIN—control center of the body
 SPINAL CORD-- Long and thin bundle of nervous
tissue extending from lower part of brain, transmits
neural signals between brain and rest of the body
 NERVE CELL (neuron)—basic unit of the nervous
system. Its main function is to deliver messages.

Hey, it’s still me, Albert. Congratulations! You have
come this far! Now, we are going to summarize all
the things that you have learned above. Are you
ready? Read the summary below.
The human body is made up of several organ systems that all work together as a unit to make sure the body keeps
functioning. There are ten major organ systems in the body, each of which plays a different role in helping the body
work.
SKELETAL SYSTEM.The skeletal system provides the shape and form for our bodies in addition to supporting and
protecting our bodies, allowing bodily movement, producing blood cells, and storing minerals. This system consists
of bones, cartilage, and joints.
MUSCULAR SYSTEM.This system is made up of muscle tissue that helps move the body and move materials through
the body. Quite simply, muscles move you. Muscles are bundles of cells and fibers that work in a simple way: they
tighten up and relax.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM. This system is made up of the heart, blood, blood vessels, and lymphatics. It is the body’s
delivery system, concerned with circulating blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. The purpose of the digestive system is to turn the food you eat into something useful for the
body. When you eat, your body uses this system to digest food so your cells can use it to make energy. The organs
involved in this system include the mouth, stomach, and intestines.
URINARY SYSTEM. The purpose of the urinary system is to filter out excess fluid and other substances from your
bloodstream. The organs found in this system are the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.
NERVOUS SYSTEM. The nervous system is the control center of the human body. It is made up of the brain, spinal
cord, and nerves. It receives and interprets stimuli and transmits impulses to organs.
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM. The human reproductive system ensures that humans are able to reproduce and survive
as a species. It is made up of organs such as the uterus, penis, ovaries, and testes.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen in order
for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. The respiratory system does this through breathing. It consists
of the nose, larynx, trachea, diaphragm, bronchi, and lungs.

  • 3. 3 | P a g e SUBTASKS: To understand that there are different systems within the body and that they work independently and together to form a functioning human body. 1. CONTENT STANDARD/ OVERVIEW In this lesson, you will have a view of the body as a system, in which, parts do things for other parts and for the organism as a whole. In addition, this material focuses on the activities to help you learn that body systems work together to build the functioning human body. The lessons in this material will teach you about the respective functions of the system and its parts. Activities are provided after each lesson to assess your learning. PERFORMANCE STANDARD Through the use of the activities in the latter part, your skills would be tested if you have mastered or learned about the concept of separate components working together to build a body system. COMPETENCY LEAST-MASTERED SUBTASKS: 4.1.1 Identify the bones that make up the skeletal system 4.2.1 Discuss the parts and functions of the muscular system 5.2.1 Identify the major parts of male and female reproductive system and describe functions of these parts. 5.3.2 Identify the parts of the respiratory system where air passes during inhalation and exhalation and describe the function of each part. 5. 4.2 Identify parts of the urinary system and their function using a diagram 6.1.2 Identify the parts of the circulatory system and describe the function of each part. 6.2.1 Identify parts of the nervous system and their functions MAIN TASK: Explain how the different parts work together. (PELC)
  • 4. 4 | P a g e G U I D E C A R D THE DISCOVERING….. Hi there! I am Albert. Are you up to another fun way of learning Science? If you do, then let us together discover and explore more about the human body. In our journey, we will be able to answer these primary questions: WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES UP YOUR BODY? DO THEY WORK TO PERFORM THEIR FUNCTION? HOW? To answer these questions, let us start our journey. That…. Your body is made of tiny living units called cells. The cells are so small that you cannot see them with your naked eyes. The different cells do different functions. A group of cells of the same kind doing the same function makes up the tissue. Tissues functioning together makes up an organ. The eyes, ears, nose, skin and tongue are the sense organs. The muscles and bones are organs. What do you think are the body organs? DID YOU KNOW???
  • 5. 5 | P a g e Organs of the body function like a team. Organs working together make up a system. Your body is made up of several systems. What organs make up each system? What do these organs do so that the systems can function well? Let us find out in these lessons. THE SKELETAL SYSTEM Look at the diagram carefully. This diagram shows some of the major bones in your body. Can you name these bones? When you talk about the bones that make up the skeletal system, you are simply talking about the skeleton. SKELETON is made up of many bones that are joined together to make a structure. FUNCTIONS:  To give your body shape and support.  It supports your body as you move.  Some bones protect some vital parts or internal organs of your body. SKULL: Protects the brain.
  • 6. 6 | P a g e Components of Human Skeleton: Human skeleton is composed of three main components; Bones, Associated cartilages and Joints. Bones: Bone is a tough and rigid form of connective tissue. It is the weight bearing organ of human body and it is responsible for almost all strength of human skeleton. Cartilages: Cartilage is also a form of connective tissue but is not as tough and rigid as bone. Bones are highly mineralized with calcium salts while cartilages are not. Joints: Joints are important components of human skeleton because they make the human skeleton mobile. A joint occurs between “two or more bones”, “bone and cartilage” and “cartilage and cartilage”. THE SKELETAL SYSTEM You are doing great with your lessons. But before I forget, the joints are classified into 3 types. Study below. THE TYPES OF JOINTS
  • 7. 7 | P a g e ACTIVITY 1:FINDING OUT… IMPORTANT: Make sure to write down your observations in the blank notes provided in this page. 1. Touch your chin. Move your hand towards your ear. This is your jaw bone. What parts of the body does the jawbone protect? ____________________________________________ ___________________. 2. Feel your knee joint. Move it. In what direction can you move it? ____________________________________________ ___________________. 3. Move your head from side to side. Turn it. Does your body turn with your head? ____________________________________________ ___________________. 4. Feel your ribs. Why are your ribs shaped like a cage? ____________________________________________ ___________________. 5. Feel your nose and your ears. Are they soft or hard? Are they bones or not? ____________________________________________ ___________________.  You have about 206 bones in your body??? As a baby, you had more than 300 bones and as you grew older, many of these bones joined together. SHADE YOUR ANSWER After reading the explanation on the SKELETAL SYSTEM, I still do not understand. Now I understand the lesson all about. WHICH PART MAKES IT HARD ? ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ What I think about the things to do? Easy Average Hard
  • 8. 8 | P a g e Imagine if you did not have any muscle. How would you look? You would look like a human skeleton. The illustration below shows your MUSCULAR SYSTEM. Muscles make up the muscular system. Your bone are your support as you move. It is the muscle attached to the bones that move them. Without the muscles, you cannot do anything. There are two kinds of muscles. The voluntary and the involuntary muscles. Voluntary muscles are the ones that you can control. Most of them move your bones around. If you want to run, walk, ride a bike or wave your arms around, it is your voluntary muscles which move your arms, legs and body around. But they can't do that unless your brain sends the right muscles the messages to 'contract' or 'relax'. Involuntary muscles don't need the brain to send them messages. They know their job and they keep right on doing it. Example is, the muscles in your heart, which keep blood pumping round your body.
  • 9. 9 | P a g e ACTIVITY 2:CHECK YOURSELF Identify whether the following muscles are voluntary and involuntary. 1. Arm __________________________________ 2. Heart __________________________________ 3. Feet __________________________________ 4. Intestines __________________________________ 5. Mouth __________________________________ Feel your heartbeat. Your heart is made up of muscles. Can you stop the movement of your heart muscles when you want to? Why? __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________. THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM SHADE YOUR ANSWER After reading the explanation on the MUSCULAR SYSTEM, I still do not understand. Now I understand the lesson all about. WHICH PART MAKES IT HARD ? ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ What I think about the things to do? • 10. 10 | P a g e IT IS NOW TIME TO DISCOVER the It’s Albert again! I hope you are still having fun with our lesson. So, let me ask you, “Have you ever wondered what happens to the food you eat? Where do you think the food goes? Let us find out how the digestive system in the human body works. SHADE YOUR ANSWER After reading the explanation on the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM, I still do not understand. Now I understand the lesson all about. WHICH PART MAKES IT HARD ? ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ ___________________________ What I think about the things to do? Easy Average Hard
  • 11. 11 | P a g e ACTIVITY 3: LET US PLAY! How To Play: In this activity, Arnold is missing organs from the digestive system. It’s your job to put them back. Below, you’ll see an outline of Arnold’s body and a whole bunch of organs around. Again, your job is to get all of the organs that belong in that system into the body. Use the stickers to complete Arnold’s Digestive System. STANDARDS FOR INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY 1. Understand and follow directions. 2. Work silently. 3. Ask questions if some instructions are unclear to you. 4. Finish your work neat and clean 5. Present your output.
  • 12. 12 | P a g e We need air to live. The gas in the air which we need to breathe is called oxygen. We could not live without oxygen. In contrast, carbon dioxide is a gaseous waste produced in our body. It is carried by blood to the lungs. There, it is expelled in our body. Mmmm. So, Mr. Albert, how does air get in our body? How is air expelled in the body? What is responsible for it? Function of the Respiratory System The function of the human respiratory system is to transport air into the lungs and to facilitate the diffusion of Oxygen into the blood stream. It also receives waste Carbon Dioxide from the blood and exhales it. Parts of the Upper Respiratory Tract  Mouth, nose & nasal cavity: The function of this part of the system is to warm, filter and moisten the incoming air  Pharynx: Here the throat divides into the trachea (wind pipe) and oesophagus (food pipe). There is also a small flap of cartilage called the epiglottis which prevents food from entering the trachea  Larynx: This is also known as the voice box as it is where sound is generated. It also helps protect the trachea by producing a strong cough reflex if any solid objects pass the epiglottis. Parts of the Lower Respiratory Tract  Trachea: Also known as the windpipe this is the tube which carries air from the throat into the lungs.  Bronchi: The trachea divides into two tubes called bronchi, one entering the left and one entering the right lung.  Bronchioles: Tertiary bronchi continue to divide and become bronchioles, very narrow tubes, less than 1 millimeter in diameter.  Alveoli: Individual hollow cavities contained within alveolar sacs (or ducts). Alveoli have very thin walls which permit the exchange of gases Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide.  Diaphragm: The diaphragm is a broad band of muscle which sits underneath the lungs, attaching to the lower ribs, sternum and lumbar spine and forming the base of the thoracic cavity.

  • 16. 16 | P a g e How does the circulatory system help us grow, enjoy and be productive in the world that we live in? First, let us define first what this system is. THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM is the transport system of the body. The term “cardiovascular” is a combination of two word; “Cardio” (heart) and “vascular” (vessels). Its major parts are the heart, the blood, and the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) COMPONENTS: HEART: The heart is the key organ in the circulatory system. As a hollow, muscular pump, its main function is to propel blood throughout the body. BLOOD VESSELS: These are the passageways of blood. They are found all over the body. It has 3 kinds:  Arteries-Carry blood away from the heart  Veins- Carry blood back to the heart  Capillaries- smallest blood vessels where exchange of nutrients and waste take place BLOOD: Blood is a specialized tissue of body that exists in fluid form. It has 3 kinds:  Reb Blood Cells- carry oxygen to the body  White Blood Cells- fight infections and microorganisms that enter the body  Platelets- useful in blood clotting to stop the loss of blood in the body

  • 20. 20 | P a g e THE BODY’S CONTROL CENTER All living things respond to stimuli. When your hand touches something hot, you immediately take your hand away from the hot object. What body system is responsible for your reaction? What is the nervous system? The nervous system is the highway along which your brain sends and receives information about what is happening in the body and around it. This highway is made up of billions of nerve cells, or neurons which join together to make nerves.  BRAIN—control center of the body  SPINAL CORD-- Long and thin bundle of nervous tissue extending from lower part of brain, transmits neural signals between brain and rest of the body  NERVE CELL (neuron)—basic unit of the nervous system. Its main function is to deliver messages.

When an egg matures, it is released from the ovary down into a fallopian tube.  Fallopian tubes: These small tubes transport ova from the ovaries to the uterus. This is where an egg waits to be fertilized.

  • 25. 25 | P a g e Hey, it’s still me, Albert. Congratulations! You have come this far! Now, we are going to summarize all the things that you have learned above. Are you ready? Read the summary below. The human body is made up of several organ systems that all work together as a unit to make sure the body keeps functioning. There are ten major organ systems in the body, each of which plays a different role in helping the body work. SKELETAL SYSTEM.The skeletal system provides the shape and form for our bodies in addition to supporting and protecting our bodies, allowing bodily movement, producing blood cells, and storing minerals. This system consists of bones, cartilage, and joints. MUSCULAR SYSTEM.This system is made up of muscle tissue that helps move the body and move materials through the body. Quite simply, muscles move you. Muscles are bundles of cells and fibers that work in a simple way: they tighten up and relax. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM. This system is made up of the heart, blood, blood vessels, and lymphatics. It is the body’s delivery system, concerned with circulating blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. The purpose of the digestive system is to turn the food you eat into something useful for the body. When you eat, your body uses this system to digest food so your cells can use it to make energy. The organs involved in this system include the mouth, stomach, and intestines. URINARY SYSTEM. The purpose of the urinary system is to filter out excess fluid and other substances from your bloodstream. The organs found in this system are the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. NERVOUS SYSTEM. The nervous system is the control center of the human body. It is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It receives and interprets stimuli and transmits impulses to organs. REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM. The human reproductive system ensures that humans are able to reproduce and survive as a species. It is made up of organs such as the uterus, penis, ovaries, and testes. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. The respiratory system does this through breathing. It consists of the nose, larynx, trachea, diaphragm, bronchi, and lungs.
